This review is from: AS FAR AS MY FEET WILL CA (DVD)I guess we are suppose to have feelings for this man, a prisoner-of-war of the Russians, but why? with all the crimes the Nazi committed in Russia, I was hoping the Russian lieutenant would bring him back to the camp and let him rot there.

Mr. Lewis, I can suggest two reasons to pity this character. First, "two wrongs do not make a right." This basic philosophy is often overlooked by some people when viewing POWs and civilians of the nations which America and our allies defeat. In the case of Stalin's regime, Soviet behavior was not much better than Germany's. Swap racial genocide for the political variety and they were both nations engaged in state sponsored murder. Second, this individual is not guilty of all the atrocities committed in Russia, just as all "grunts" are not guilty of the crimes committed by Lt. Calley and his unit at My Lai. The point of Nuremburg and subsequent trials was to punish both the leaders and those identified as being the actual perpetrators of war crimes in the field. The Soviet policy of enslaving tens of thousands POWs for years after the surrender was contrary to the whole purpose of the trials. You may not be aware, but Soviet POWs who survived German captivity were not welcomed home as heroes. Stalin had them sent to the same camps as the Germans, since he felt they'd been corrupted by exposure to the West.
Your view is the same attitude that lead to the mistreatment of American personnel who found themselves in the hands of the North Vietnamese, Somalis, etc. As individuals they are unfairly held accountable for the actions of their government. If you feel this treatment is acceptable for a former soldier of a defeated rouge nation, I have to wonder how you might feel about the treatment of convicts in the penal system. Do you expect the murderers and rapists arrested on our nation's streets to be treated this harshly, or do you give them a break for being sociopaths?

Very well said... if these words were not enough to open the eyes of those filled with hate and vitriol then nothing more needs to be written.

Frank Lewis says:
If memory serves me correctly, the Germans attacked Russia and the German "death head" squads murdered citizens randonly. Pay back is well worth it. Give any criminal a break may be they didn't have mommies love as a child. Nonsense.
