This review is from: Glass Heart (Audio CD)
This is not the Glass music I'm used to. This violin sonata is constructed with a neo-romanticist structure but individual sound elements are unmistakably minimalist. That is, if you listened to a bar of this sonata, you would have no trouble identifying this as a minimalist work, or even one written by Philp Glass. However, the way the music flows and develops from bar to bar places this firmly in the romantic tradition. To me, this is a winning combination that creates moments of heartaching beauty in this sonata.
The sonata is played beautifully by the violinist Maria Bachmann and the pianist Jon Klibnoff, for whom this work was composed. Bachmann and Klibnoff, who are also two-thirds of Trio Solisti, are known as strong proponents of contemporary music, such as The Red Violin, Café Music, and Part: Fratres. They are also excellent when they play more established repertoire, as with the rest of this CD, although there they don't stand out from the crowd as much.
