5.0 out of 5 stars Reasons to buy, August 17, 2009
This review is from: Stargate [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
No one can really review this product because it isn't out yet, but to answer (and counter) the above poster, there are several reasons to buy this release even if you bought the first Blu-ray release. I knew better; Stargate had at least 3 DVD releases (the first two were subpar), so why wouldn't Blu-ray be the same? I held off on the barebones Blu-ray (one of the first films to the format), even though it could be had uber-cheap.

The intitial Blu-ray only had the director's cut, which I find inferior to the theatrical cut (gives away too much at the beginning for one thing), so I never bothered to buy it. The new release will have both cuts of the film, plus lossless audio instead of just DTS-HD High Resolution (which is still very good). I would expect an improvement in video quality as well. I believe the first release was a 25GB Blu-ray with MPEG-2 compression.

Plus, this disc should have a slew of extra features, including but not limited to those contained on the Ultimate Edition DVD. From thedigitalbits:

"You'll get both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film via seamless branching, along with audio commentary by director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, The Making of Stargate documentary and the Is There a Stargate? featurette. You'll also get a 3 all-new featurettes (Deciphering the Gate: Concepts and Casting, Opening the Gate: The Making of the Movie and Passing Through the Gate: The Legacy), a gag reel, the BD-Java Master of the Stargate interactive trivia game and the Stargate Ultimate Knowledge PiP viewing mode."

I am very excited that Stargate is finally getting the Blu-ray treatment it deserves.

This release will feature a new 1080p encode, along with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Additionally, it will offer both the theatrical and the extended cuts of the movie, and four hours of extras, including three new featurettes, a trivia track, and a gag reel

Mr Hilderbrandt,
Do you have any information on the subtitles issue,I love the film, but didn,t bother buying it on blu-ray the first time after reading quite a lot of reviewers complaints about "no subtitles".
I,m "hoping" that with this new Edition, there will be subtitles!!!
I bought The Pianist Blu-ray over here in the UK,there was more than a bit of fury at this release NOT having subtitles,at the German speaking scenes, but, credit where credit is due,Optimum Releasing said that all the people who bought The Pianist blu-ray without subtitles can send them back to Optimum Releasing, and they would replace them with subtitled discs, and they did!!!
I sincerely hope we dont have to go down the same road with the "new" Stargate blu-ray.
ANY INFO on the "subtitle issue" would be greatly appreciated,Thanks.
D.Cairns.

Just thought I'd add a clarification. First the info that it's region free will be welcome to many Australian buyers, so thank you for the post, although multi-region players are now available in Australia (I buy all my DVD and Blu-ray titles from the US). But A/B/C are region codings for Blue-ray, whereas 1-6 refers to DVD. So there is no such thing as region B4.

Okay, I've got the movie in the double-pack DVD, thinking I might have some featurettes on it (not really), and then the Blu-Ray (oldie). I don't really feel like buying the film again unless 1) this copy is significantly superior in quality; and 2) that the featurettes are not just throw-aways. It sounds like the latter is true, but am I getting more out of the movie itself other than subtitles?

As a point of order, you do not get two versions of this movie as the review suggests. The description states:

Item Type: BLU-RAY DVD Movie
Item Rating: PG13
Street Date: 10/27/09
Wide Screen: yes
Director Cut: no
Special Edition: no
Language: ENGLISH
Foreign Film: no
Subtitles: no

I see no reason to laud Lionsgate for releasing a decent version of Stargate after initially releasing a horrible transfer in Blu-Ray. Are we to commend manufacturers for releasing an unacceptable product followed by another version of the product that is finally acceptable? I bought the first version of the Blu-Ray release trusting that the transfer would be decent. Unfortunately, most of the artifacts in the first release weren't Egyptian! The grain was excessive, the color pathetic and the sound only so-so. I don't intend to reward this way of doing business. My version says "1080p/Beyond High Definition," when all it was was a ripoff. You may want to shovel more $$$ to these people, but I'll never buy another Lionsgate product again. Hopefully, neither will anyone else. [Confederates post on another review)

So which is it "Confederate", are you going to buy the better release? Or whine about it?
