MasteringBio = amazing,
This review is from: Biology, 8th Edition (Hardcover)
This book is a good biology text book -- it's pretty easy to read and has interesting examples and real-world applications of some of the concepts. The MasteringBio website, though, is AWESOME. It comes with an ebook version of the text book, so you don't have to carry it around with you (good because it is huge and really heavy). It also has quizzes and mini tests that you can take online to see if you understand the material. The best part in my opinion though is that there are all kinds of animations and interactive learning tools that make the material super easy to understand. I absolutely recommend it!

Can you get access to the MasteringBio website by only purchasing this book, or do you need to buy supplemental material to receive access?

You can purchase access to the website apart from the book at http://www.masteringbio.com/ ; note however that there are two different options available when you sign up to access MasteringBiology, one that does not include the eBook the original poster mentioned and one that does, the one that does being much more expensive. From what I can tell, you receive access to the eBook as well as the animations, quizzes, etc. if you purchase the book new (or, perhaps, from your campus bookstore which may sell used editions of the book wrapped with access to MasteringBiology [check your bookstore]).

My version came with the MasteringBio account. It's pretty good but the eText uses Flash Player which is a proprietary formats from Adobe. So it won't work on iPhone or iPad! Someone at the publisher needs a smack for using Flash for a electronic book.
Other great texts such as Organic Chemistry are available on Kindle for example.
