2.0 out of 5 stars Testing VIPRE Premium - wait another year, November 10, 2010
This review is from: Vipre AntiVirus + AntiSpyware (CD-ROM)
Testing VIPRE Premium - wait another year

Amazon has the HOUSEHOLD PRICE here (for 3 or more PCs). The current single PC price is less at SUNBELTsoftware 's website.

So far, I'm testing the trial version of VIPRE ANTIVIRUS PREMIUM (which is not yet on Amazon). VIPRE PREMIUM is this anti-virus with a FIREWALL added.

VIPRE ANTI-VIRUS and/or VIPRE PREMIUM is available for Trial Download at SUNBELTsoftware 's website so, you can test it and compare before you buy it.

I'm comparing Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 with Vipre Premium.

Kaspersky has a higher retail price and a less reputation for the category of spyware/malware compared to Sunbelt (Vipre or CounterSpy). Which is why I started looking at VIPRE.

Both Kaspersky Internet and Vipre Premium have the firewall included, which is REQUIRED nowadays.

If you get any antivirus package, a FIREWALL has to be included. And MICROSOFT'S WINDOWS FIREWALL IS INSUFFICIENT, as it DOES NOT check or block OUTGOING traffic from your PC (like personal, financial information, etc). RE the posting about Bitdefender being better - I had that 2 years ago and quit using BITDEFENDER Internet Security because after six months BITDEFENDER started randomly TURNING itself OFF without my knowing it (and re-install did not help).

VIPRE PREMIUM - IS BETTER PRICED for me with a SINGLE PC price, doesn't slow up or entangle your Windows install PC (like Norton Symantec), and has had TOP RATINGS (like Kaspersky) in the latest reviews for anti-virus and anti-spyware.

COMPARED to other Internet Suites ...
What could be improved on the current Vipre Premium ???
* FIREWALL is NOT setup for FULL PROTECTION when it's installed from the start ...
- you have to go in and manually CHECK/ENABLE the IDS and HIPS (Intrusion Detection and Host Intrusion)
- you also have to change ALLOWed Intrusions to the better automatic action of "Block with Notify"
- firewall isn't user friendly (suggestions and guidelines relative to the applications on your PC)

Additional Improvements Needed ...
* INITIAL SETUP the important security decisions should already be set up as DEFAULT in the install process (you can't assume Grandma works as a PC Technician)
* no Parental Controls
* no Spam Filter
* recent PC Mag review (March 2010) also stated that the VIPRE "self defense" protection could also be improved

But my Vipre Premium (Trial Version) has a PROBLEM INSTALLING UPDATES (either Manual or Automatic). The "Definition Updates" revert back to zero (out of date).
Searching Google or SUNBELTsoftware's FORUM bulletin board for (for VIPRE) "Update Problem" shows that this is a current, common problem. (I haven't tried "regular" Vipre, so I don't know if it has this same problem).

Because of this VIPRE PREMIUM update problem, I'LL WAIT another year before buying testing Vipre, and keep my Kaspersky Internet instead.

I'm hoping VIPRE PREMIUM will be fixed/improved over this next year, especially since they have single PC prices - and most of their prices are lower than the competition. Remember, that even though the initial purchase price may be lower at Amazon, you'll have to spend $ to RENEW your software from the manufacturer's website the next year (at a fairly HIGH price).

Meanwhile, I'll still use Sunbelt's CounterSpy (current version 4) as an anti-spyware supplement to Kaspersky. So far CounterSpy has NOT had any problems. But, Amazon does not have the latest version of CounterSpy - go to SUNBELTsoftware 's website.

Remember, ALWAYS DOWNLOAD A TRIAL VERSION FIRST from the manufacturer for testing and comparison from different companies, before you buy ... including annual REVIEWS from PC Mag, PC World, etc

== UPDATE ==
Sunbelt's CounterSpy 4 was my choice for anti-spyware, but it's being discontinued to force users to upgrade to Viper. Since I still prefer Kaspersky Internet Security (anti-virus with firewall), I'll probably use a spyware package like WEBROOT SPY SWEEPER.

Note that the "renewal" for Kaspersky is cheaper if you just buy the latest Kaspersky CD from Amazon and then copy the CD key number into your PC's Kaspersky registration screen.

(HINT) Vipre would still have to include most of Kaspersky's features for me to switchover.
