I'm an old school gamer from back when it was all paper and pencil (I even still have a blue cover version of the D+D rules!). As such Eve is my first explore of the on-line game genre. I've found it's pluses are also it's minuses. Any game worth playing needs complexity and variations to keep it from getting repetitive and boring. However that also means a learning curve to pick up on the complexities. The mark of a good game is a tutorial that brings the beginner smoothly up to speed. On that EVE is a disappointment in that the learning curve is more like a wall. Countless times during the ordeal I would growl in frustration "This tutorial ISN'T!". But if you can muddle through that initial ordeal things get better from there as the complexity of the game starts to work for the gamer. There are multiple ways to play, not just mindless shooting at things. Mining asteroids, run deliveries, explore, hack communication centers for information, and yeah shoot things. With the variety of ships, equipment and skills that effect play it can't be said there's any one ultimate formula for success. Carve out a nitch and woe be upon some other player that wanders into it unprepared! So the game is worth playing.
All one has to do is get past the tutorial...
