I'm a big fan of modern writers/stories of the Indian sub-continent and "behind the beautiful forevers" rates in the top 5 with A Fine Balance, Moth Smoke, Sacred Games, and Shantaram.
Katharine Boos, brings the story of the citizens of the Annawadi slums to life. Her narration is amazing. I had to keep looking at the copyright page to confirm that the story was actually non-fiction.
The author does a great job describing the people, places and settings without letting opinion or judgment creep in. Set in the slums of India, the book offers sharp contrast between the haves and the have-nots in a vibrant, diverse society trying to balance new ideas while at the same time dragging the citizenry into the 21st century.
I was saddened by the poverty; outraged by the corruption and touched by the perseverance. Behind the beautiful forevers a must read!
