2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe You Shouldn't..., March 25, 2012
This review is from: The Book of Drugs: A Memoir (Paperback)
Here's the most concise way to explain the pettiness and bitterness in these pages: He never uses the name of anyone in Soul Coughing. Not once.

I suspect this may be less that he doesn't want to name them than that it might produce a legal quarrel. From the bulk of the (admittedly one-sided) book the other bandmates are described as pretty greedy, and a nice libel case always turns a buck or two. He also doesn't name many of his exes (I assume/hope to protect their privacy) and fellow recoverees (I assume to protect their feeling of a safe and private space in which to recover).

But yes, he is bitter. I can sympathise. He was in an abusive relationship but couldn't find the courage to leave. If he was an abused spouse we would hug him and probably try to get him to a local crisis center. He was in a band though, so we tell him to 'nut up' or 'quit complaining, you're in a band! It's supposed to be fun!'

David Rubien says:
I think he avoided naming the band members for the exact opposite reasons you give. And for anyone who really needed to know their names, there's this thing called Wikipedia.

Beau M. says:
Because...

1. He expected that most people were going to read the book to get all the details about Soul Coughing, and he kind of expected that those people would know their names already.

2. It most importantly though, would have been a major legal issue and wanted to avoid that scenario. He was going to use pseudonyms for them just like most everyone else in the book that were mentioned, but he threw them out because "the pseudonyms I came up with sucked", in his own words.
