Blood and Sunlight: A Maryland Vampire Story
This would be a wonderful story even without the vampire element. It tells the heart-wrenching story of a bullied child who meets an alienated girl and their friendship. But even the minor characters get full treatment-- the bullies, encouraging teacher, local drunks, and thugs are all fully developed. And all of them seem a product of the unkind landscape in which they live. Everyone is trying to escape something. It's bleak, dark, sometimes even gory but it feels real and, at the end, there's real vindication.
If you've seen the movie, the book fills in so much that was only touched on in the novel. If you haven't, start here!
