This review is from: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Video Game)
I'm a huge fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, I would regard it as my favorite video game series of all time thanks to its enriching story, engrossing characters, incredible gameplay and innovative cinematics. When first hearing about Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, I was in huge doubt of the games success in capturing the essence of what makes all MGS games great. Metal Gear RISING isn't a Metal Gear SOLID game, it is a spin-off in venturing the story of the bait-and-switch protagonist Raiden and exploring his character a little bit more. Rising comepletely veers off from the taditional stealth action gameplay to a hack-and-slash mayhem that fits Raiden's cyborg ninja persona. This game takes place approximately 4 years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots where the war economy has shifted into being a mere business (what else is new) and there is a new terrorist group trying to eclipse the world with new ideals and comeplete control. While this game is developed by Platinum Games, Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions oversaw the storyline making sure it fits into the Metal Gear Universe the best way possible without tainting the credibility of the characters; and while I think the ending product could have been better, I thought they did a decent job of creating an engaging storyline from beginning to end (despite its flaws).

Pros:
- Gameplay is incredible, (although not traditional Metal Gear) the swift hack and slash gameplay has been 100 times over in countless games before it, but Kojima developed an innovative style of gameplay that I;m sure many games in the future will try to replicate. The concept of being able to cut practically everything in sight, and to have comeplete control of the blade is pretty damn cool. The new over the top gameplay is different, but it is quite entertaining. And for all you Metal Gear purest, there are old MGS elements of stealth snuck into this game such as the iconic hiding in cardboard boxes, or just sneaking behind enemies and killing them before you get seen by the enemies and it goes into Alert mode.
- Graphics are pretty incredible, Platinum Games did a great job creating easy on the eyes environments and having a diversity of levels.
- Characters - The main character Raiden has been a polarizing favorite for Metal Gear fans. Every since his introduction in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, fans have either hated him or tolerated him; and ever since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots when he transformed into the new cyborg ninja, fans have either loved him or hated to admit he has turned into a cool badass. In this new game, he is more confident and a very different person from MGS4. The bosses in this game all have something going for them and have distinct personalities especially Samuel, which would be Raidens arch nemesis in this game. And just to make sure this game actually connects with the other metal gear games, they added Sunny for a little cameo which was very cool and relieving to know this game is canon.

Cons:
- The story can be very silly at times. Although the story has a decent theme that fits in with all the Metal Gear games, how it unveils is completely anti-climactic. And for all of you hardcore Metal Gear fans wondering; RISING is in fact Canon and is a continuation of the main Metal Gear storyline. For some that may be bittersweet, but for me personally, I will buy any Metal Gear game that is canon. (Unlike Metal Gear Ac!d) Luckily this game is actually pretty good.
- Without spoiling anything, I thought the final boss was total crap. Not memorable nor interesting.
- The length of the game runs for about 5-7 hours depending on the difficulty. I expected at least 8 hours of gameplay and storyline.
- Voice Acting - was a comeplete hit or miss. Some characters voice actors fit for the most part such as Raidens crew and the return of Sunny's voice actor, but everyone else...mehhhhh. The villains sounded so cliche' and idiotic, especially the voice actor of Sundowner.
- The Camera angle for this game would work for the most part at least 8/10 of the times. But there are instances where the camera would lose focus on the enemy and just go to some random place.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a pretty good game that is able to hold its own. For all the Metal Gear fans out there, I'm not gonna lie, you might hate this game for what it is. But personlly as an MGS fan myself, I found this game enjoyable and fun all around, albeit not up to par with the other Metal Gear games. But if you're willing to give it a chance, you might be surprised of how well executed this game actually is. With that being said, I hope this will be the FIRST and LAST Metal Gear Rising Kojima decides to create. Its a good game, but I hope Hideo Kojima will just focus on Metal Gear SOLID from now on and leave Raidens character alone. If he does so happen to create another RISING game, I hope it will revolve Frank Jaeger's character AKA Gray Fox.
