Gray's young adult novel 'Evernight' started off very well, immediately catching hold of the reader with its air of danger and exciting, fast pace. I loved the menacing gothic atmosphere in the early chapters, and immediately connected with main character Bianca. Gray does a nice job evoking sympathy for her teenage heroine early on, creating that reader-character bond by bringing in the universal theme of the runaway teenager upset with her parents. Where the book falters is when we find out exactly what Evernight is, and what Bianca is. In my opinion not enough clues were given earlier that would lead the reader to suspect the truth, something that would have made the book more compelling and fleshed it all out more. Still, even with that jolt in continuity I really liked the book. I have a feeling I'd have really loved it as a young adult, though as an adult I still found it compelling. When my own teenage daughter finishes reading the latest Stephenie Meyer I know I'll be handing her 'Evernight.'
