The Clues are Here,
This review is from: The Butterfly Clues (Hardcover)
I really liked the way this was written and the main characters. The author does a really good job of creating unique main characters (Lo and Flynt) that are completely unlike anything I've read before BUT don't feel like the author is trying too hard to be different. It's a rare feat and done well here.
In fact, you really get a good understanding of what life is like for people with OCD. Lo is believeable and you feel for her. She's one of the better YA heroines around because she's real.
That said, there are some problems. Almost all the other characters are stereotypical (the police officers who don't care; the ones that care to an unbelievable degree; the snotty high school kids; the clueless high school boy; the overworked father; the distant mother, the stripper with the heart of gold; the bad guy). I wish the author had spent more time with the secondary characters.
Also some of the plot points were hokey. I wish the story had centered around Lo and Flynt but without the 'who done it' plot. Saphire could still be part of it...the part with Lo's brother was well done. But the murderer after her was just a little too hard to believe. And the high school bits could have been left out.
And it's rather predictable. You know who did it very early on...at least I did. And you know who Bird is before Lo does, too.
But overall this is an interesting read and something I think people who like YA work should look into.
