Several reviewers have mentioned that they've never heard anything like this, and I think that these sessions may indeed have represented something very new in the "cool" style, recorded way back in 1959-1959.
I don't know if Bob Brrokmeyer's imaginative work on trombone directly inspired later artists, but I do hear a very similar esthetic in some of Wayne Horvitz's work. (And perhaps even on Bobby Previte's masterpiece, Claude's Late Morning, albeit with an expanded lineup including Horvitz on keyboards and Ray Anderson on trombone.)
There's quite a bit of variety over the 6 albums included in this generous serving, some of it more traditional to the "cool" style, but, as other reviewers have said, it is all very good. And, at its best, exquisite.
