This review is from: The Truth About the Shroud of Turin: Solving the Mystery (Paperback)
Robert Wilcox's story of his 30+ year investigation of the Shroud of Turin is truly a fascinating and easy read. As some reviewers have pointed out, this book is not for Shroudies who know all this information and far more.
What makes this book superior is that it works for the masses who still see the Shroud as a "Midieval Hoax." Wilcox's prose is upbeat and inbues a "thrill of the hunt" air to his story of his investigative reporting on the Shroud. It has all the information a first-time Shroud-studier needs to know. Its content may be Shroud 101, but it is a very good introduction on the Shroud story. I've studied the Shroud on-line for years, but I learned much about its early research history in this book.
Wilcox does cover the latest, conclusive Shroud research involving the debunking of the 1988 Carbon14 studies, the certainty of the 3-D images of the Shroud being impossible to produce by the hand of man, either artist or scientist, and the recently discovered images of Christ on the back side of the Shroud. All of these findings, plus the work of the STURP investigators, leave the question answered for all but straight-jacketed skeptics: the Shroud is almost certainly the burial cloth of Christ, and the only answer that makes any sense regarding its formation is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. As Wilcox concludes, "it's up to the skeptics to prove the Shroud isn't the one that covered Christ and the images on the cloth were produced by something other than his resurrection."
This evidence is of towering, first importance to all mankind. The Shroud's story and veracity demonstrate that the historical Jesus Christ existed, and the Biblical accounts of his torture, crucifixion and resurrection were perfectly accurate. Further, and of the highest importance, is the existence of those "paranormal" images and how they were produced. All the evidence REQUIRES Christ's resurrection.
Therefore, given that monumental reality, the God of Christianity is "necessary" by the evidence of the Shroud and its congruence with the Biblical record. Atheism is thereby proven false and the God of Christianity is again, necessary. He exists.
More research is waiting to be done, but all the work that has been done leaves no alternative to God's existence. That alone makes this book worth reading. The only serious questions that remain are:
1. Why does the media bury the story on its back pages?
2. Where is the Catholic church on all of this?
