I was greatly disappointed with this book. Sociology has nothing to say about humanity as it ignores human nature entirely. This author does not recognize that due to the destructive influence of the state, marriage is no longer a symbol of growing up but instead of one's being a dupe.

"Sociology has nothing to say about humanity as it ignores human nature entirely."
Actually, since scientists from a variety of disciplines (e.g. anthropology, sociology, psychology) have been unable to document that there is anything, even one thing, that all humans everywhere do in exactly the same manner THAT IS NOT EITHER A REFLEX OR A DRIVE (such as blinking, or some such non-complex behavior), we are unable to conclude scientifically that there is such a thing as "human nature." Like it or not, scientific conclusions require proof, rather than "common sense." Some scientists, such as Stephen Pinker, are trying, but there is not a consensus on what they have to say.

don't get your undies in a knot, K Suzy, this is just "oral ate laboral" spewing what he does not know, and what is contrary to fact. Be not his "dupe." FACT!
Sociologists like Kimmel certainly know nothing about human nature. Yes, there certainly is a human nature. We lie, lust, cheat, love, steal, murder, etc. in every location all over the world. Not all humans do these things but they are certainly a part of human nature. Dr. David Buss has great insight in his The Evolution of Desire showing that cross-culturally (in 37 nations) many men want the same things as do women. This is not surprising. His book on jealousy is a fine source as well. That anyone could continue to think our behaviors are "socially constructed" is nothing short of astonishing. Yes, there's proof and there's also common sense. Thinking that humans all act differently in various settings defies all experience, common sense, and certainly cannot be proved. The burden's on you to prove that nonsense. Pinker is an excellent source. Read the Blank Slate.
I know plenty about these things but instead of making fun of St. Benedict, why don't you try laboring and praying? It'd be a fine start for you because you can't argue your way out of a paper bag.
