It doesn't sweep, but it does suck!,

This review is from: Hoky S.E., Inc - Floor & Carpet Sweeper (Kitchen)This is going to Craig's List ASAP. I'm sure someone will have a use for it. It seems well made, although I haven't yet figured out how to empty what little it seems to have picked up. I bought it to supplement my canister vacuum, to pick up cat hair and scratching post leavings on a low pile carpet and the tracking cat litter on a hardwood floor, but this thing doesn't seem capable of picking up anything like that. I bought a small electric broom to replace it.
I think this might be great for commercial carpets or for restaurants as a quick pickup (if they can figure out how to open the hatches at the bottom to empty it), but even them I have my doubts. Mostly it sucks!

Yes. I inherited one when we moved my mother out of San Francisco and it sat around for some years. Then I thought of it when kitchen area rugs on hardwood floors attracted crumbs, etc. Worked great. Then I moved out into short pile carpets in other rooms and great again for quick pickup and raising the pile. Had to spend some time, like you, to find the release, but once done, seemed logical and easy to empty into a bag. I'm using Mom's Hoky 23T regularly.
