Give It Time...,
This review is from: Pay the Girl (Audio CD)
I won't lie to you: I bought this CD at full retail awhile ago, and it didn't impress me, so I traded it in about a year ago. But just recently, thanks (unfortunately) to a going-out-of-business sale, I picked it up again on a whim from the same store for almost nothing. Now that I've had a few weeks to re-acquaint myself with Pay The Girl, I must say I'm glad I did.
There's really not a bad song on this CD. "Beverly" is a good solid rock song reminiscent of Nine Days' "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)", except that it's marred by the painfully cliche'd line, "I wanna be your Romeo". Possibly the best song on the album is the exquisite ballad "Clueless". Other great tracks include the rocker "All You Are", the first-rate power-ballad "In Between", and the closing track, "We Both Lose". Jason Phelps' lead vocals not only sound a bit like Jon Bon Jovi's, but also give this group's sound the same complementary, propulsive energy.
Sure, there's nothing about them that's particularly groundbreaking or unique, and their "radio-friendly" production values might make them seem a bit bland and even turn off some listeners, but as far as debut albums go, Pay The Girl put out a pretty darn decent and enjoyable CD. If you're not impressed at first, give it time ... you may find yourself warming to it like I did.
