Another Amazon Faux Pas,
This review is from: Henning Mankell's Wallander (DVD)
The Swedish series "Wallander" is probably the best police drama ever filmed for its comprehensive attention to quality in every aspect of film making. Anyone that has seen it rates if 5 stars and with good reason. Unfortunately, Netlix has this season 2 (not noted in the product description) in its entirety as part of its membership archive (for $8). Equally unfortunately Amazon has Season 1 in it's entirety BUT which they have decided to hack into four pieces and charge $30 for each piece of 3 episodes each or $120 for the 13 episodes. Or you can rent each episode for $5 ($75 for the privilege). To date this is the most egregious exploitation of its customers Amazon has engaged in. Not many are going to rent this for $5 let alone pay $120 for the series. Nor are they going to pay $80 for a Netflix-like subscription to watch Amazon films many of which are available with Netflix and those that are not only $2.99 - a fair rental price. Nor are they going to refer anyone to this service. If Amazon wanted to promote its rental streams they would not gouge the price of their best material in rentals or sales. As a store manager one told us (as we negotiated to buy a few dozen surplus glasses he had) "Better in your house than in my store" and gave us a price that was much less than we expected. We have been back there a dozen times and referred at least six dozen foreigner visitors to that store. Eventually this will be available elsewhere and we will simply wait for it (there are other excellent Danish and Swedish and French police drama series out there right now). Sorry Amazon your bait is way too expensive for our humble fish bowel. Dean Corso

I agree. I rented Seson 2 from Netflix. I will find another way to watch the Wallender series at a reasonable price. Which foreign films do you recommend?

I agree with this comment. I loved season 2 of Wallender on Netflix. But will not pay Amazon for the enormous price they are charging for the other seasons.
What other foreign films do you recommend on Netflix?

Hi Stu - there are some other excellent foriegn police dramas on Netflix: Spiral (French), The Protectors (Danish), The Eagle (Danish), Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter (Swedish), The Larsson Trilogy - The Girl with the Dragon tattoo, Girl who played with Fire, Girl who kicked the Hornets Nest (Swedish), The Man from Beijing - A Wallender-like thriller (Swedish). Then there are two excellent English series Foyle's War and George Gently if you like Masterpiece Theater type of police mysteries. Too bad Amazon is over the top with Season one trying to milk everyone for the $75 as I suspect not too many people are takers. I haven't been back to Amazon since (just rented one movie for $2.99). Good luck, happy viewing. Corso

There are many reviews here, but none gives the titles of the movies included in The Music Box set. The set offered by MHZ Networks (for $103.87) includes:
Before the Frost; The Village Idiot; The Brothers; The Overdose; The African; Mastermind; The Tricksters; The Photographer; The Castle Ruins; The Container Lorry; The Black King; The Forger; and The Secret.
Are the Music-Box set titles different? Would you take the time to check? Thanks (even if you are too busy).
Why is MHZ price more than double the Amazon price?

Dean Corso says:
Yes, these are from Season One and NOT available on Netflix. You'd have to ask MHZ why their price is more than Amazon but either way they are BOTH way too expensive (for what they are). Amazon is at $5 episode or $65 to rent all three (at $5 per rental) and about $90 to buy then (in three different sets). I have pretty much given up on Amazon - they are like the ecstasy or the agony depending on what you are looking for. Good luck.

Dean Corso: Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I will buy Season 2 since it is available for about $50 (i.e. about $4 per episode); and then wait for prices to go down for Season 1.

I couldn't agree more-the bad thing is that I am addicted to this show and I am in love with Krister H's Wallander. I want to move in with him and Jussi and all the records. I could make them happy, I think!

Who are you Dean Corso??? I loved Spiral, Foyles War, Rebus, BBC Wallander- and then I saw Krister's Wallander and I have found peace at last. I love your reviews- Wallander makes me feel like I am less alone- your reviews do as well. Thank you
