This original soundtrack of the Roman Polanski's movie under the same name, is superbly written and conducted by Alexandre Desplat, the very prolific (and heavily awarded!), French film composer (born in Paris in 1961), for which he won a Cesar Award. The orchestration, the performance (by mostly French musicians), and the sound quality (recorded in Paris), are all exceptional.
The score gives a relentless atmosphere of anxiety, tension, fear, and suspense, where danger, expected and unexpected, is lurking behind every corner. Even the rare moments of tranquility are full of apprehension and uncertainty. It reminded me somewhat of the constant tension in Shostakovich's music. Desplat reinforces magnificently Polanski's dark intentions! A true work of art.
