After The Load Years- Despite it's failures still a refreshing change,
This review is from: St. Anger (Audio CD)
I have been a metallica fan for a long time. You have to go back to where they came from in order to appreciate this CD. You cannot simply say this is no Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning (those were phenomenal releases), you have to remember that Kill em all was neither of these albums either nor in the same league and that is where metallica began.
People complain about the woah's and yeah yeah's James they think he has developed recently but take a listen to kill em all and you'll hear those as well the only difference is that now he has a stronger voice.
Metallica have changed on every release. I was not a fan at all of the Load CD's but can still appreciate their efforts. Metallica has realized that they must change somewhat with the times and will not be able to release a Master of Puppets like album again.
On to St. Anger. Like everyone who read any of the pre hype of it being a return to Justice I was expecting a tougher album however was only cautiously optimistic due to the producer who shall remain nameless. First of all the sound quality and drums are terrible. A garage band sound is not necessary for metallica. It is not raw, it is not energetic nor reflective of the talent of this band.
All that being said I believe this would have been a much better album with a different producer. The songs on this are much more reflective of a stronger metallica than Load or reload (guitar solos or not. Personally I believe there's not a bad song on this with the exception of Invisible Kid (come on guys I get the concept but the song is just annoying). Frantic is a strong song but The tick tock thing was not necessary at all. I think Purify and My world are closer to where this band should be.
Can't wait for the new one the sound clips are decent although you have to be cautious with the Unforgiven III on this (come on guys the first one wasn't THAT great why sequelize it..can we expect the Unforgiven IV next time?)
Metallica still rules--I'm out.
