This review is from: Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song (Audio CD)Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song is a fantastic collection of songs from the very strong singer/songwriter Amos Lee. MOSROS represents a fine continuation of the pattern Lee set with Mission Bell -- excellent songwriting with deep, passionate lyrics and catchy tunes and very interesting guest appearances that really add to Amos' voice (and music) but don't overpower it. In particular, Patty Griffin is a terrific complement to Amos Lee and I'd love to see him do more songs with Griffin in the future. Recording with his touring band seems to achieve an instant "unity" to the Album that is noticeable.
I first heard Amos Lee as the opening act at a Dave Matthews Band concert and was immediately impressed with his voice -- only to learn that his songwriting was equally outstanding. When you hear critics refer to certain songwriters as "craftsmen" you can think that the term is overwrought but it would seem appropriate to call Amos Lee a "craftsman" songwriter in a simple, straightforward way since he produces such "easy" quality.
So I would recommend ANY Amos Lee album as a good purchase but MOSROS represents a very brilliant effort, perhaps his strongest to date. My favorite songs (on first listen) are Chill in the Air, Dresser Drawer, The Man Who Wants You, and the title song "Mountains of Sorrow" but all the songs are strong showings. It's a very mature album and hopefully promises much more to come in the future from this very talented musician.
