It worked for me!,
This review is from: Between Parent and Child: The Bestselling Classic That Revolutionized Parent-Child Communication (Paperback)
I came from an extremely abusive home and was too afraid to have children - afraid that I would be a statistic and abuse my own children. A very dear friend gave me this book and coupled with great counseling, I gradually rose above my fears and raised three successful and happy children. I read this book from cover to cover - I had to totally learn a new way of thinking, responding, and feeling. I read it often to keep it fresh in my mind and heart. I broke the abuse chain - I am proud of this. This book gave me the tools to do it! This book gave me the inspiration and guidance needed to be the mother I wanted to be. The reason I wrote this review today, is that my 25 yr old daughter wants to buy this book before she has children - she remembered me talking about it, reading it, and singing it's praises as I raised her. I can't give you a better review than three happy well adjusted young adults and one very happy and content Mom. This book changed all of our lives. Good luck and good parenting, Deb

What a wonderful review. I'm so happy that you rose above your abusive background and chose to do better with your own children. It is a choice. Like you, I also came from a less than ideal situation and made the choice when I had children (I have 3 too) to do it differently. It takes a lot of work but it is so worth it. Great review! I will definitely add this book to my huge collection. Thank you!

The same for me! My sons are now grown and expecting their own children. This book gave me the tools I needed to change the patterns I grew up with--and principles for dealing with people of all ages that have stayed with me throughout my adult life. Thank you Haim Ginott!

Wow. Your review (the first bit) could have been written by me! I, too, came from an abusive home and I chose not to have children because of it (I was too much like my abusive father when I was younger). Many years of therapy later, I have been told I'd have made a great mom. I'll probably never know, but I was heartened by your review. Thank you! P.S. I'm also buying the book. If it worked for you...

I, too, was raised in a very abusive home. My mother had chemical imbalance issues and was very violent. I grew up feeling unloved and afraid. My dad did not step in to help my brothers or me. I read this book and used the wonderful techniques in raising my daughter. It just gave me a new way of thinking and believing that I could be kind and understanding to my daughter and not have her grow up in fear. She is now 43, has four children and is a great mother. I am also very proud of myself that I worked hard and broke that chain. Another excellent book I used is Your Child's Self Esteem. Your Child's Self-Esteem
