This review is from: Restaurant Man (Hardcover)
First paragraph defines the margins in the restaurant business. It had me from the first page. If you spend a fair amount of money at restaurants, you should read this book. It will describe how it all works. I can see how it may be grating if you own or manage a restaurant. However, this is a great story about someone who leveraged their efforts to create an enormous organization. Politics aside, talking about how Bill Clinton was working the room and how members of his dining party were busted for telling lesbian jokes, its a great insight into running a group of successful restaurants and how they manage the customer base.
Bastianich's writing is vulgar at times. There are many f-bombs in the book. He writes as he probably speaks. I grew up in NY metro area and it's just not shocking to me. The story is engaging. I finished the book in two days. Hard to put down. If you like Bourdain, you'll like this.
Its a good story and I learned a lot about the restaurant business. Now I'm certain I'll *never* open a restaurant.
