This novella grabbed me right from the moment I read the first sentence. That's what I look for in a story---writing that keeps me from ever wanting to put the dang thing down. "Eat at Joe's" is the kind of story that is talking to you even when you've stepped away from it and are doing other things in your life; it's calling you back to read, to finish.
Whitford's skills are evident the moment he introduces you to the landscape of his tale. His descriptive ability is deep but he doesn't overdo it; he paints the canvas beautifully but with earthen tones, nothing bright or flashy or harsh on the eyes. His prose draws you into this world he's created for you, the reader, but he's also created it for his characters and they are characters you will care about.
I grew up around landscape and people much like those in this novella and the heart, soul, and human elements ring true. The author has succeeded in creating characters and setting that are not only interesting and relevant, but also authentic.
My hat's off to Mr. Whitford. The highest compliment I can pay is that I'll be looking for everything else he writes.
