4.0 out of 5 stars 5 good stories out of 6, February 2, 2011
This review is from: A Valentine's Day Treasure (Mass Market Paperback)
Six stories, each about 50 pages except the first one, The Gilded Cage by Janis Laden at 80 pages. That was unfortunate, in my opinion, as it was the only one I did not care for. Alexandra's father sends her home from India with Viscount Weddington as her escort. She is aware he dislikes her but doesn't know why. All is revealed as the story unfolds and the premise of the story is decent; but, the H/H were so haughty and arrogant in their dislike for one another it made for a tedious read. 1 star

A Ring for Remembrance by Georgina Devon: a failed elopement and a lost memory have kept the H/H apart for 7 years. They are brought together at a house party, she not knowing he lost his memory and he, of course, with no memory of their engagement. A sweet story nicely told in a short span. 4 stars

The Bay Leaf Legend by Violet Hamilton: A young Annabel is smitten with a man in a uniform who is a fortune hunter. Her solid, staid (and in her mind very dull) childhood friend is patiently waiting in the wings. In a very few pages the author had me remembering my own foolish infactuations when I was young. kudos. 3 stars

A Play of Hearts by Valerie King: Poor Beth thought she was being kissed by the man she loved, Lord Brenton, but, no! Lord Brenton was witness to the kiss and Beth was unable to explain the deception perpetrated by a family member. Years later as Beth is attending to Lord Brenton's neglected nieces and nephews, the deception comes to light. I enjoyed Beth's character. 4 stars

Tattered Valentine by Irene Loyd Black: A young Lucinda is in love with a stable hand, James, who gives her a Valentine card before he is dismissed by her father. Forced to marry a man to beget an heir, Lucinda has kept the tattered card until, reminded of shattered dreams, she throws it away following her husband's death. And then James returns. An unbelievable, and wholly unnecessary, gliche in this story is James being given a dukedom after service to Wellington. If you can overlook that (and I did), this is a nice story. 4 stars

A Valentine Bride by Teresa Des Jardien: Baron Whittam must marry quickly if he is to inherit per the terms of his father's will. How to pick a bride in a hurry to satisfy the terms? Advertise. Fallen on hard times at her parents' deaths, Christine applies for the position rather than starve. This is a story of falling in love after the marriage. Nicely done in a minimum amount of pages. 5 stars

In summary, keeping in mind these last 5 stories were completed in 50 pages or less, I was much impressed by the character and story development. Very pleasant reads.
