1.0 out of 5 stars This really is the worst Metallica album of all time: *1/2, February 9, 2011
This review is from: St. Anger (Audio CD)
WOW, I never expected such a mess like this from Metallica. Even as a very avid fan of Metallica, I have to agree that this was the serious lowpoint in Metallica's career. With Newsted now out of the group, New bassist Robert Trujillo [Suicidal Tendencies] steps in to fill the Bass duties [Although it is producer Bob Rock who plays bass on the album] and all throughout the making of this album, Metallica faced some of the biggest turmoil of their careers behind the scenes [Hetfield's alcohol problems, the Napster controversy, the constant fighting between the members all of which documented in the documentary Some Kind Of Monster]. This album is quite a forgettable one as Metallica just doesn't seem right at all on this release. While it is in fact their most metal album since Justice, This album is simply boring as hell. A newly-sober James Hetfield sounds quite confident on songs like the title track and Invisible Kid it's just too bad the band couldn't come up with better material than what's on this album and the new snare drums that Lars uses on this album are very annoying and messes up the sound to every song on this album. The title track and Some Kind Of Monster are halfway decent songs but that's about it as far as listenable tracks are concerned. And where extended songs meant epic songs on albums like Master Of Puppets and And Justice For All, Here they're just epic snoozefests. And another thing, Metallica unwisely chose to have no solos on this album and Metallica have tuned their guitars down on this album which gives the album an almost nu-metal sound. Let's hope that Metallica never again makes an album like this. If you're not a die-hard Metallica fan, you can DEFINTELY skip this! On a relieving note, This is the final Metallica album that Bob Rock would work on as a producer. And after this mess, Bob Rock doesn't deserve to produce another Metallica album ever again!
