"Your Child's Self-Esteem" was recommended to me by my oldest daughter's child psychologist. I caught sight of it while I was in the waiting room, and after I read the Table of Contents, I realized the subject matter and strategies were pertinent to our situation. My daughter suffers from low self confidence (always has), and I tend to be too strict in my parenting style, leaning toward authoritarian. It was the way I was raised, and I learned from this book that most of us adopt similar parenting techniques that were used on us in our upbringing.

The most eye-opening and challenging chapters were on anger and jealousy. In most cases, I saw myself as Briggs was describing how children handle negative emotions. Her refreshing perspective not only encouraged me to reframe how I was handling my children's negative emotions, but also how I could better handle my own.

Finally, she pulls everything together in her final chapter on a child's attitude toward sex and relationships. Her perspective was not one I was familiar with, yet - again - I found it to be refreshing and thought-provoking, because it challenged some of the puritanical, stereotypical views I was raised to believe about sex and marriage.

After reading "Your Child's Self-Esteem," I feel better equipped to tackle some of the previously nebulous and frustrating aspects of parenting. Even more, I have specific strategies on how I can change as an adult, hopefully growing toward emotional maturity in all of my interpersonal relationships.

I've read a few parenting/discipline books and think this is a wonderfully written book that covers a wide range of topics and age groups. Yes, it was written decades ago but poeple are deep down the same; we all want the best for our children.

I had a copy of this book for many years, but loaned it out and never got it back. I bought 2 copies, one for the expectant mama, and one for a replacement for myself. Yes, Briggs vocabulary is dated, but if you read it as tho a loving grandmother is giving you excellent advice, you soon won't be bothered by that. This book isn't a bible or preachy. It's a thought provoking easy read, and I think most people learn quite a bit from it. I know I did, and I raised 2 magnificent, thoughtful, mindful sons.

I bought this book on a reccomendation from my pediatrician; that was over 30 years ago. This copy was for my child who just had a baby. This book was on my nightstand for years as my children grew; I referenced this book many times.

This book was bought for one of my grandchildren's mother because she was having a hard time with one of her young boys. It helped me understand why she was having so much trouble, and she like it also.

After almost 40 years, this '70's tome is STILL the best guide to parenting out there. If you're expecting a child or if you know someone who is, do yourself and/or your friend a favor. Get this book.
