5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another pregancy book
When you have a baby you end up buying a million books and reading everything you can. When you have your second, as I just did, you only have time to read the most practical books. This book gave me all the understandable nutritional information that I needed for a healthy pregnancy, plus 100+ great-tasting recipes that even I can cook and my family enjoys. This is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really impressed
This sounded like exactly the kind of book I'd like: I was newly pregnant for the first time, I'm generally health-conscious, and I enjoy cooking and cookbooks. I did like it when I got and read it. But I've now had this book through essentially all of my pregnancy and after looking through it several times, I haven't used a single recipe from this book. Granted, this...

This is one "pregancy book" that has a shelf life longer then 9 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Do Not Have to Be Pregnant!, April 22, 2003
By Judie McCaffery (Dunwoody, GA USA) - See all my reviews
I am sixty-four years old with grown children and a grandchild and I am enjoying this book very much. The recipes are tasty, easy with well-written directions. Being a vegetarian, I especially enjoy the many meatless recipes and the nutritional information. This book is chock full of good information for anyone at any stage in their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes and a great resource, July 30, 2003
By Melissa Alshab (Bethesda, MD) - See all my reviews
This is a wonderful cook book, even after pregnancy. The recipes are some of my husband and toddler's favorites - we particulary love the flank steak with salsa verde, bbq chicken, and goat cheese and tomato pasta salad. I refer to the book frequently - there is so much great information in here. Many of the recipes are great for entertaining - easy, wonderfully tasty, and special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, innovative and nutritious recipes, June 9, 2003
Every recipe we've tried has been terrific: the ricotta cheese pancakes, the crab cakes with red pepper sauce, the turkey burgers, the cheese and spinach quesadillas... These are definitely recipes we'll keep using even after our baby is born, and ones we've already shared with friends and family (both pregnant and not). The authors include nutritional information for each recipe, as well as tips for variations and saving time while preparing the recipes. Highly recommended!

As another reviewer stated, you do not have to be pregnant to reap in the wonderful results of this perfect cookbook. Lots of amazing recipes and chock full of priceless information on the nutrients we need, which foods have them and how to cook them to perfection. I have already lent this book to a friend who is pregnant, and can't wait to get it back. I plan to use this book for any future pregnancies as well as a lifestyle cookery catalyst.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best cookbook I own!, March 23, 2006
I don't normally bother writing reviews, but this is, hands down, the best cookbook I own. We bought it either before or early into my pregnancy, but we still use it regularly over a year after I gave birth. Every recipe we have tried has been excellent and fairly easy to prepare. My parents, die hard beef addicts, even asked for the turkey burger recipe after we served it to them. I just mentioned it to a friend that's a personal chef last month and she flipped through it with great interest, impressed by the nutritional information, and planned to buy it for herself. I'd loan it to her, but it's the only recipe book we actually use!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one, this is it!, April 5, 2007
This recipe book is wonderful. It is full of recipes that are easy to do, and it doesn't require a lot of exotic products, though it does have some very creative dishes. One of the best things about this book is that it explains what each recipe contains that's good for the baby and you. The introduction explains what you need and why, and the recipes not only tell you what requirements that meal meets but also what to add to make it a "complete meal." The vegetarian section is great, regardless of whether you are one or not, and the dessert section helps you feel less guilty about those sweets cravings! The book has recipes anyone in your family would like, and my husband has been quite happy with everything I've made so far. If you're cooking for kids, there are ideas about how to encourage your kids to eat these recipes (though there are many kid-friendly recipe, so I don't think you'd have problems getting your kids to enjoy the book, too). The tips and charts sprinkled throughout are helpful: some examples of the charts are "healthy bagel toppings" and "smart choice frozen foods." As you can see, the book also recognizes that you will eat other things not in this book, and it helps you make wise choices about those food options, too! Also, most recipes have suggestions how to adjust them accordingly if you're diabetic or need to enrich your calcium intake, etc. I particularly recommend the three-bean vegetarian chili and the banana muffins with walnuts and wheat germ (I omit the nuts for allergy reasons)--yum!
As its title suggests, in many ways this cookbook is far more than a cookbook: it really is a "guide to nutrition" concerning "eating for pregnancy." I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great nutritional info., June 13, 2006
I love this book! I am trying to conceive and I bought it so I could start eating right. I am a healthy eater anyway, but the book offers useful info. about why you need certain nutrients and how much more of each vitamin and mineral as well as how many more calories you should be eating. There are also many good recipes. I have made only 2 so far but both were yummy. I highly recommend this book to anyone pregnant or looking to start trying to conceive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book even if you are not pregnant!, October 7, 2006

This book is a gem not only for its balanced nutritional information, but just as a GREAT cookbook. Have you ever had a cookbook where you can just pick it up and EVERYTHING you make is fabulous? Well, this is the one. Recipies are easy to make and quick for busy people. The salmon with papaya salsa is out of this world! Whenever I make something outstanding, I always say to my husband, "Guess what cookbook this came out of?" This book has made preparing for pregnancy a culinary delight! Thanks Jones and Hudson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Recipes!, November 8, 2006

I absolutely love this Cookbook / Nutrition Guide. My husband and I are planning a pregnancy and I have decided to start making "healthier" nutrition choices. I was a bit skeptical at first but after trying a few of the recipes, I was hooked. These recipes do not compromise on full flavor! The "pearls of wisdom" information is so helpful too. I will be enjoying this book for many, many years. By the way - the "apple blueberry granola crisp" is my -now and probably forever- favorite dessert.
I'm really hoping the authors will collaborate and publish another cookbook.
