informative in a different way
definitely very comprehensive information on all important facts and titbits abt hydroponic gardening. the only reason i give it 3 stars is because the list (if you pay attention) of components given to build the various hydroponic systems is NOT complete. the steps given to build the systems are somewhat vague and sloppy in some areas. i am not a handyman, i barely...

I purchased the pdf copy of this book some time ago and found it useful as a good primer for hydroponics. It will give you a basic introduction to the types of growing systems, nutrients, lighting, and all the ins and outs of growing your own plants with hydroponics. If you are a hobbyist just getting started and are interested in getting a small system I would highly recommend this book. However, if you need in depth knowledge about any process involved with hydroponics this is not your resource.
The plans for making your own system were straighforward enough and gave me enough ideas to create my own aeroponic system rather cheaply instead of having to go out and buy an expensive pre-built system. However, I have to say that if you are building your first system I would go with an ebb and flow or bubbler system. The aeroponic system is a lot of fun, but if there is a leak or a hardware failure your plants will die rather quickly.

Great Intro to Making a System, August 8, 2006

This is the best book I've found as far as actual plans and instructions on making simple basic hydroponic systems. It does not go into detail about feeding and light requirements for specific plants, but I found it valuable for the detailed system plans and instructions on building them, which I had not been able to find elsewhere.

Concise and to the point!, April 3, 2006

Over the past few months, I have bought and read a number of books on the subject of hydroponics. This book is by far the best book on the subject I have read. It is written in a simple and easy to understand manner. Very readable. The plans and instructions for the different types of hydroponic garden apparatus is worth the cost of the book alone.
Absolutely excellent!

definitely very comprehensive information on all important facts and titbits abt hydroponic gardening. the only reason i give it 3 stars is because the list (if you pay attention) of components given to build the various hydroponic systems is NOT complete. the steps given to build the systems are somewhat vague and sloppy in some areas. i am not a handyman, i barely recognize the various plumbing fittings (much less know what each one used for) and therefore had a lot of problems 'winging appropriate replacement parts' for the systems. all that being said, it is a bit pricey, but a definitive and (the most) comprehensive guide to hydroponics. and the author does provide online/email support (answer questions, whatnot) for his book which is priceless.note: if you are frugal/stingy/thrifty, dun buy the book. a few hours on google and you'll get all the information summarized in this book on the web FREE.

Each hydroponics book seems to specialize in one different thing over all others. This particular book seems to specialize in all the different varieties of equipment you can buy or make yourself. The pictures make everything clear and easy to understand. For specialized info on what to grow, how to grow it, how to care for it, and how to eat it, I would recommend INCREDIBLE VEGETABLES FROM SELF-WATERING CONTAINERS by Edward C. Smith. For specialized info on how to make your own fertilizers, greenhouses, and CO2 setups for hydroponic systems, I would recommend HOME HYDROPONICS AND HOW TO DO IT by Lem Jones. Altogether these three books will give you everything you could ever want or need to know about non-commercial hydroponics...well, except for specialized info on hydroponic grown marijuana, in which case you will need to buy another book in addition to the three above.

Excellent Resource, July 1, 2007

From reading several hydroponics books in our local library, I learned quite a bit about the science aspect of hydroponics. There's lots of information in books and on the internet about indoor lighting systems, different types of hydroponic systems, nutrient solutions, etc.
Very few, if any, of the hydroponic reference books in the library contained enough information that would allow me to construct my own hydroponic system from materials available at the local hardware stores. If you search online, you can find commercially available systems for $200-$500 that look like they were made from PVC pipe, Rubbermaid containers, and so forth.
"Hooked on Hydroponics" contains the necessary construction details that will allow me to construct my own system. Some experience with PVC pipe, plumbing issues, and so forth is really needed, but it is NOT hard to learn how to work with PVC.
As other reviewers have noted, there are no color photos inside the cover, but I greatly appreciated the details, step-wise construction directions, and helpful photos found in this book. The author tells us exactly what model pump is used, the brand he recommends, and other important details that will allow me to be successful right from the very start.
The author does a great job of describing the advantages and disadvantages (i.e. what do you want to grow?) of each different hydroponic system. I highly recommend this book. It is exactly what I needed to purchase to construct my own hydroponic system that will fit my needs, at a fraction of the cost of a commercial system.

Mixed review, March 20, 2008

I purchased this book hoping to get plans I could use for building my own hydroponics system. While I was not impressed by the selection of systems presented in the book, the detail in this portion of the book is adequate and the instructions are easy to follow. If someone desires to build a system of the types presented this could be a great resource. Overall the writing style of the book is good, however, the authors knowledge is often lacking. He seems to have a very poor understanding of chemistry and physics in particular. If you want to learn more about lighting, nutrient solutions, etc. you will be better served ordering a different book.

I've seen the colorful pdf version of the book and I was very disappointed with the poor black and white quality of the printed version. Otherwise, this is a great book for beginners and it'll allow you to understand the basic principles and build some hydroponics systems easily.

I checked this book out from the library and my version (older one) looked very "DIY" but the information inside was useful. It offers basic concepts (but not vapid) of hydropoincs so that you could, in all likelyhood, can get started after reading this book. To get a deeper understanding of hydroponics one can also read other sources such as internet sites and other books on the subject to expand on the concepts explained in the book. The author prefers that you read it in the corresponding chapters he assigned. I liked how it is basic and gives you basically the information you need. I thought a couple topics went over my head but it wasnt that pertinent to starting growing some plants. The author provides some plans for hydroponic systems as well and gives you other resources to check up on and use to hone the craft of hydroponics.

I wanted to know if it was feasible to start a garden at home. I was amazed at how easy it was. I now have two systems going, and thanks to the manual, they are working perfectly.
