This book IS the ultimate guide!, July 25, 2004
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
I just finished reading my neighbor's copy of The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life, by Jan Cullinanae and Cathy Fitzgerald, and I had to share my enthusiasm about this book. I am also going to get my own copy! It is a great summary of all of the things we Baby Boomers should be thinking about as we approach retirement. The New Retirement helps the reader decide when and where to retire, whether continued employment may be necessary or desirable for financial or psychological reasons, and how to make the transition into a retirement lifestyle that is right for you. I'll recoup the cost of the book many times over by taking advantage of the ideas in the financial planning and tax chapters.
The book is unique in that it really does address 'the rest of your life,' from retirement planning, to maximizing the retirement years, to preparing for the eventual sunset. The New Retirement opened my mind to the many paths I can take to spend the rest of my life in a fulfilling manner.
The authors' conversational style and sense of humor make this an ENJOYABLE read. The wealth of fascinating facts, web site references, analyses of places to live, and practical advice make this a MUST read.

VERY SOLID INFORMATION, March 14, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
I have two financial concerns: The first is paying for the college education of my two sons. Fortunately they are 10 years apart in age so I won't have them attending college at the same time. The second is saving for retirement. I'm still 25 years or so away from retirement but I see how my own parents have struggled as they got into their mid-70's. My dad did not have a retirement account and my mom only got into one maybe 10 years before retiring. A sobering prospect.
This book is a real eye-opener. We don't plan on re-locating and we are only looking to maintain our current lifestyle while trying to account for medical expenses. While much of the book does focus on the best places to retire with appropriate ratings, I found most helpful the various surveys and worksheets designed to come up with the retirement plan that best fits your desires. You'll uses these work sheets to figure out just how much money you'll need to have when you retire based upon your lifestyle.
Most interesting was information on a "working" retirement, where you enjoy the benefits of retirment while perhaps owning a small business. There are lots of opportunities that you may not have considered for a working retirement. There are also the very important sections dealing with healthcare, living wills, and dealing with aging parents. This is great information for us as we are now dealing with two aging and ill parents ourselves.
Whether your planning that retirement to Arizona or Florida, or planning on staying where ever you are at, the information in this book is invaluable. Best of all it's great no matter what age you are whether a younger person in their late 20's or in their 40's like me. It's never too late to get planning.

Best of the Bunch!!, January 18, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
I recently attended a seminar about retirement given by the authors of The New Retirement, Jan Cullinane and Cathy Fitzgerald. I also purchased a copy of their book after their presentation. Having just finished the book, I'm happy to report that the book, as well as their talk was helpful, informative, interesting, and enjoyable. Their nice style (both in the book and speaking) combined humor with valuable insights - things I wasn't aware of (such as ingredients to a successful retirement - hint - it's not only about the money!). I liked the concepts of universal design, the worksheets, their specific recommendations about places to retire, and their A to Z list of what to do to reprogram your time. The New Retirement really does cover the Who, What, Where, When, and How of retirement. I picked up a few tax tips that I'll be able to implement, too.
I've will retire in about three months, and have/am collecting as much info as I can about this time of life. The New Retirement is the best I've come across, and believe me, I've looked at virtually everything. I very, very highly recommend this book!

The New Retirement: A Holistic Approach!!!, July 12, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
Finally........the retirement book that I have been looking for....and I have been doing a lot of looking this summer.I hope to retire in about 7 years and I have yet to find a retirement book (until this one!) that is truly A-Z in its scope. This book hit the spot specifically because it delved into the psychological and readiness aspects of retirement as well as doing a great job on explaining the typical financial and locational aspects of retirement. The psychological opportunities and pitfalls of retirement are discussed and supported with recent and credible psychological studies. This book really makes you think clearly and test yourself before jumping into that standard question: "Do I have enough enough in my 401-K to retire?" Yes, this book puts retirement planning all together in an easy-to-read "one stop shop" approach. Its delivered in a fun manner with straightforward and understandable language. I strongly advise anyone planning retirement to get this book!

Retirement For Active Adults, August 20, 2004
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
The authors have made a remarkable study of all aspects of retirement. As a recently retired resident of an Active Adult community I found the book to be especially helpful in the areas of financial planning, travel, retirement options-as to lifestyles and areas of the country. The chapter on Health issues and the Checklists are invaluable. This is by far the best retirement guide I have seen--a must read!

An Incredible Book at an Incredible Value, October 22, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
I have never spent under $20 more wisely. This almost 500 page book has already saved me lots of money, time, and worry with its finance/tax advice, its description of potential retirement places (I was able to narrow my list of locations considerably), its wealth of references, its worksheets, and its comprehensive approach to retirement - it truly is the ultimate guide, and you won't need to purchase another book on this topic. Kudos to the authors for writing the kind of guide that is easy to read, practical, specific, and realistic.

The New Retirement: it works for me, July 11, 2004
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
Does it seem like you've spent a life time searching for the perfect retirement planning guide? If so, now you can "retire" from your search. Nestled among the mountains of how-to books, I found something new ... and best of all ... something truly different. Authors Jan Cullinane and Cathy Fitzgerald offer readers a yellow brick road to the perfect retirement destination. Perfect because the destination you choose is based on your unique needs. You will not find a lock-step, "one size fits all" plan here. More than just informative, this book is inspirational. Turning these pages awakens your motivation to plan. Remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. So motivation to plan is the real key to retirement success. "New Retirement" opens the reader's mind to all the possibilities, and all the resources necessary to arrive in style when you get to retirement's door. Readers aren't just invited to drink the water, the authors get you to jump in and swim among a sea of options. Some say, "You can't judge a book by it's cover." Wrong. The book's cover design, created by Joanna Williams, is the best I've seen in my 25-plus years in the field of gerontology. Let's not forget, the first obstacle publishers must overcome is to "get people to pick up the book ... then read ... then plan ... then retire successfully. The cover design is bold, compelling, and a wonderful metaphor to those who believe our retirement outlook is sunny and bright ... with nothing but blue skies ahead. I predict a Best Seller. One other thing. When I began reading the book, I was pleased to notice the attention to detail. For example, right there in the book's acknowledgments, the authors note their financial experts are Certified Financial Planners, not just financial consultants. If you don't know the difference between these two professional groups, you really need this book. In fact, I'd advise, "Don't retire without it." Topics address issues related to time management, personal goal-setting, meaningful use of time (travel, education, voluntary service), extra income (second careers, consulting), retirement locations, legal and financial concerns, health and wellness, and checklists to facilitate comprehensive and sound retirement planning.

A Great Buy!, January 7, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
Live on a ship? Home exchange? Stay in other peoples' homes for free? Be an air courier? Lists for making your existing home or new home accessible as you get older? Great money tips? Specific recommended locations with actual names of developments, not just names of cities? The New Retirement is packed with so much information, it will be a guide for years to come.
Cullinane and Fitzgerald have done an outstanding job of researching this book. It's a pleasure when the phone numbers listed and websites actually work, unlike in many books/articles. I've read many, many books on retirement, and this one has it all - it really IS the ultimate guide!

Almost everything under one cover, April 28, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
This just may be one of the best all-round books on retirement available. From whether to retire, to where to do so, to how to afford it, to selling your home, to health insurance, to Social Security, this volume just about covers it all. When I first saw the wide-ranging Table of Contents, I wondered about depth of coverage. But it's solid and deep enough in most areas to keep at one's fingertips as a reference. And what a compendium of internet URL addresses! First-rate! I set myself the goal of reading through it in a weekend, and skipping only a few pages that didn't relate to my situation, I made it -- which is not to my credit but an attestation to the readability of this text. An excellent first book for the future retiree, The New Retirement belongs on the well-stocked bookshelf, where it may be the only work to pull all the pieces together. A bargain for the price!

Information to start but tough reading, June 14, 2005
This review is from: The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
The New Retirement is a well-constructed book is written by two teachers, Jan Cullinane and Cathy Fitzgerald, who have done excellent research to provide the reader with copious amounts of information on a variety of topics. If you are getting down to the nitty-gritty of planning for retirement, it's a great resource guide to have.
There are three main parts to the book: What Shall I Do With My Time, Where Should You Spend Your Retirement Years (the bulk of the book) and How Do You Enjoy Your Retirement for Years to Come.
The first part deals with preparedness to retire. One of the downfalls of the book is that it is quite comprehensive and as such can only provide snapshots of information. This is very evident in the first chapter. This chapter tries to help you to determine why retirement might or might not be successful. Their research is accurate, but at 20 pages (in a 476 page book), it only scratches the surface. More valuable are the chapters on reprogramming your time, the opportunities for travel and living choices.
The bulk of the book (over 100 pages in the second part) covers pros and cons of living in each state and several countries abroad. Each place is rated on climate, cost of living, health care, transportation and things to do, as well as an overall rating. In addition, they provide some neat pieces of information about each place. For example, "Clearwater, Florida has the highest number of lightning strikes per capita of any city in the country." My cats would probably not appreciate a move there!
The New Retirement is a good volume to dip into to explore different issues and begin research on items which apply to you. It's not a book to sit and read at one sitting. Then again, if your library has this volume, as mine does, it might be good to go there to begin your research.
