I've been using this driver set since about 1997. I'm on my third set, which I just got a few weeks ago. When my second set wore out, I tried every other brand I could find, and finally went back to this one, even though it's not easy to find in stores and has several drawbacks.

The best: drill and screw with one bit, narrowest lock band for close drilling, positive locking, allen wrench in back end (might be the best feature).

The worst: the main shaft is a bit undersized and can get out of true if dropped more easily than others, allen screws wear out, hard to find new kits.

In practice, I have different bits (square, flat, phillips #'s 1,2 and 3) already installed in different holders with the most likely drill size (mostly #'s 6 and 8). That way, I never have to switch the driver tip on the job unless I break one, or it wears out (it happens, and it's a normal wear item, won't last forever), I just grab a different holder and it's ready to go.

If you're serious about drilling and driving, you need both in one holder. Other brands wear out quicker (I test them working 8 hour days, 5 days a week in a Milwaukee 18v lithium drill: I use it for kitchen and bath remodels and concrete counter mold making; I'm using this kit as much as anyone could, and using it HARD).

The allen screws that hold the bits do wear out, prepare for it. When one breaks, I steal one from an underused size holder and pick up a new one next time I go to the hardware store.

I've tried them all, nothing compares in functionality, and the others require even more careful maintenance to keep them working.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch the water, June 22, 2000

A really nice set that comes in an excellent case. The allen key to adjust the bits is in the driver so you always have it. Although you have be careful and always lock the bits in otherwise the drop right out when the drive is turned upside down. I was putting deck boards on a floating dock and dropped the 6, 8 and 10 bit in the water. I had to go to Woodoworker Warehouse to replace them.

I've been using this set for 6 or 7 years now, on a variety of woodworking and home improvement projects. Beyond tightening up the allen screws every now and then, and replacing bits and phillips heads, this product has exceeded my expectations. To be brief, it's sturdy, compact, works as advertised, and is easy to use. Flipping from drilling to screwing is a snap--really, just slide the snap ring up, rotate the bit, snap the ring down and you're ready to go.

The drill bits are a little specialized, since they have a flat spot to set the allen screw against so it won't spin in place. I found a local distributor who was more than happy to sell me a couple sets of three bits in the sizes I wear out fastest (#6 and #8).

Go ahead and buy this product, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent., December 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Makita 784832-A Quad-Driver Pre-Drill, Drive and Countersink Set, 13-Piece (Tools & Hardware)
After reading all the negatives. I had to give my opinion. The drill driver set is one of the best tools I have ever purchased. I've been a carpenter for over twenty years and I've spent a lot of money on tools. Good and bad. Whether your working in the shop or your building a deck in the backyard. This tool makes the job easier. You drill and counter sink the hole at the same time, flip the driver around and drive in the screw.
The shaft that fits in the drill has a locking collar, when you flip the driver around it locks in place and will not come out until you unlock it. The only problem I have with the tool is the shaft will occasionally fill up with saw dust and the collar will not lock. All you have to do is tap your drill and problem solved. This tool was well thought out, there is an allen key built in the end of the shaft. You can change your bits and screw tips right on the spot. They even give you extra drill bits and extra allen screws. $37.00 does seem to be a little high, I paid $29.00 a couple years ago at Woodworker's Warehouse. Buy the set it's money well spent.

Tightening down with the hex screw works for awhile but eventually it just becomes too loose. The reversible bits eventually get sloppy in the locking mechanism too. Its still in my toolbox but I've upgraded to a Jack Rabbit Cabinet Maker set and it is incredible.

I've been using this set in my workshop, mostly for drilling & sinking screws for drawer slides, hinges, etc. Like any other tool it needs to be handled with a certain amount of care and as other reviews note, the stud that mounts in the drill chuck is aluminum, not steel. I can imagine that some of the less happy reviewers were using it at a job site rather than in a workshop.

It's very convenient when you want to drill and countersink in one motion, and then sink the screw. You don't have to change from a more typical drill/countersink bit to a separate crewdriver bit. Just twist the collar on the stud that mounts in your drill chuck, and reverse the drill bit, and you have the right screwdriver bit for the size screw you've drilled for.

It's most useful when you want to sink the screw right after you've drilled and then go on to drill the next hole, etc. It wouldn't add that much efficiency if you're drilling a lot of holes one after the other, and then going back to set all the screws.

This kit was purchased to replace an older Makita bit that I had been using frequently for almost 10 years before I lost it. This new one broke where the screw tip inserts into the bit the very first time I used it. Very cheap, very poor quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality made in china, September 14, 2006

The bits either get jammed or fall out of the driver shaft, the locking ring falls off, the crews that hold the bits fall off and could not be secured. The overall construction is poor. The parts are made from aluminum and not the stainless steel. One bit broke in the second screw. I called Amazon at 866-660-8114 before ordering. The rep said that all Makita tools and accessories are made in either the US or Japan. Not true! This set was made in China. I bought this set to be used with the Makita 14.4 V impact driver, which also made in China. I am returning this set.

3.0 out of 5 stars " Still scratching my head ", May 28, 2003
This review is from: Makita 784832-A Quad-Driver Pre-Drill, Drive and Countersink Set, 13-Piece (Tools & Hardware)
This item is way to much over priced... I opened the package and immediately started scratching my head in disbelief. Even with the free shipping it wasn't a deal as far as I'm concerned.
This is the chance you take buying through a catalog....

I've owned my set for over 6 years and have gotten more than my money's worth from the set. The number of times I've had to start my pilot hole and then set the screw goes on and on. With this, it's so simple to start my hole, flip the bit and set the screw. After 6 years, one of the bits stopped snapping back into place cleanly. However, there are 3 other bits in the set and I switched to one of the 3 remaining and things are fine.

The only negative that I've had with this is that it extends the length of the drill out about another 2 to 3 inches. When I'm doing tight work in cabinets, it gets a bit challenging to use. Other than that, it's the only bit I always keep with my drill.
