Slo Niacn best at night
Slo-Niacin is not a "No Flush" product. The flushing is much less than with a regular 500mg Niacin but occasional flushing still happens... To avoid the embarrasing blushing/flushing at the wrong time take it at night just before bedtime. If you flush you wont even know it and you won't feel the warmth either...

Warning - "flushing" doesn't really describe it
Different people can react differently, and apparently many people have no problem taking Slo-Niacin. But I just wanted to warn others as to what *can* happen, since it took me completely by surprise. I had been told that niacin can cause "flushing," which I took to me some redness of the face. What I did not suspect was that one day (about 3 hrs after taking the pill)...

Lowered my triglycerides from 240 to 80, July 27, 2005
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
I've been using this for a year on MD's advice to lower my cholesterol profile. My triglycerides were especially high. It had been very effective in lowering my total cholesterol from 245 to 165. I have had no flushing as I titered up the dose from 500-200 mg/day. I take it at night and take 1 ASA 1/2 hour before take the Slo niacin.

Good stuff, July 23, 2004
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
When starting Niacin, I was worried about 'flush'. Slo-Niacin still can give you a flush, but is usually briefer (2-3 minutes) and milder than I've heard described for 'instant-relase'.
After taking it for about a month, I rarely get a 'flush' but occasionally just a tingle. Now up to three a day, to get 1,500 mg per 'The eight week cholesterol cure' book.

Slo Niacin IS a good resolution for cholestrol problems, July 18, 2009
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
I am a smoker with type II diabetes; and have been struggling with a very low HDL (good cholesterol) for quite some time now; Though my total cholesterol has never been above 195, and my LDL is always within the normal limits. Well, I got fed up with hearing all the doctors tell me not to worry about my HDL, its probably just because of my smoking, so, I talked to a very good friend of mine, who is an RN Nurse (always felt this man should have been a doctor, he has saved my life on several occasions) and I told him about my dilemma, and HE suggested to me (knowing ALL of my medical history) that I start taking one 500 mg Slo niacin daily to start, and IF I don't see my HDL rise, then talk to my physician about upping it to 1000 mg daily. When I was into the doctors office in June, about 4-5 month's after I started taking the niacin, she ran all my blood work, and LO and BEHOLD my HDL rose to within normal limits; instead of being stuck down at 25-28 it is now up to 46 with (normal rates s/b 45-55)just ONE 500 mg Slo Niacin a day! So, I would HIGHLY recommend this pill to ANYONE with cholesterol inefficiencies

Warning - "flushing" doesn't really describe it, December 26, 2009
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
Different people can react differently, and apparently many people have no problem taking Slo-Niacin. But I just wanted to warn others as to what *can* happen, since it took me completely by surprise. I had been told that niacin can cause "flushing," which I took to me some redness of the face. What I did not suspect was that one day (about 3 hrs after taking the pill) I would be sitting in my chair and my back would start to feel as it was on fire. Soon afterward, my entire body, from head to toe, was red and burning. It felt and looked like the worst sunburn you've ever had, only more so. It tingled and itched; my skin was hot but my body was cold and shivering. I was so scared that I went to urgent care. They had me chew a couple of aspirin, and whether because of the aspirin or on its own, it went away after about an hour. If I had known that all of this was a possible side effect, I wouldn't have freaked out so much. I didn't even know for sure that it was the niacin -- that was the doctor's opinion -- because I had been taking it for two weeks without a problem. I thought I might be having some kind of mega allergic reaction to god knows what. We speculate that there may have been a defective pill that was not "slow release," and perhaps that is why I was able to take it for two weeks without a problem. So, my beef with Slo-Niacin is its failure to fully disclose possible side effects. For all I know this is otherwise great stuff, and for most people this kind of side effect would not occur. But be prepared for the possibility.

Works great!, June 22, 2008
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
I take this product to increase my HDL ("good" cholesterol) and I also HAD high tryiglycerides.
I take this pill before bed (just in case there would be side effects, like flushing, I would not be aware of it).
My blood work (for cholesterol) is normal and I have no complaints whatsoever. I would recommend this product to anyone whose doctor recommended taking Niacin.

Excellent product, December 1, 2008
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
Taking regular niacin can cause a very uncomfortable feeling called "flushing" of feeling hot and sun burned. This product, if taken correctly, has much less of that effect. I have found three things to do to avoid flushing entirely. First, start with a half tablet (or buy the 250mg) then increase gradually over a couple weeks. Second, drink two glasses of liquid when you take it. Third, avoid taking it and then eating fatty foods for an hour.

Minimal flushing, HDL up, LDL down, June 6, 2010
This review is from: Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 500 mg, 100 Tablets (Health and Beauty)
My HDL (good cholesterol) number was low, so my doctor recommended timed-release niacin, 250mg. Brooks brand worked well for me, no flushing, and measurable improvement. However, when they went out of business, I had difficulty finding a replacement that did not make me flush. My doctor then recommended Slo-Niacin Polygel Controlled-Release Niacin, 250 mg, 100 Tablets (Pack of 2) (obtained from Amazon), which fixed the flushing. However, my HDL was back down to its prior level.
Next, this Slo-Niacin 500 mg, which I obtained at Costco. This occasionally caused flushing - my doctor recommended taking it at bedtime, which fixed that.
All my numbers got better! However, at the same time I resumed taking a daily fish oil supplement (Kirkland), which is active in this area as well. (Even with enteric coating, I get the occasional fish burp, which is why I had stopped - I might have been taking it during the prior improvement.) So, I cannot say whether the niacin, the fish oil, or the combination was responsible, but I'm sticking with the program.

This is a heart medication, recommended by my doctor. It's used in conjunction with two other prescription meds. They're keeping me alive. Please don't discontinue this product.
