4.0 out of 5 stars Avent Variable Nipples Are A Life Saver!
The Avent Variable Flow Nipples allow formula mixed with cereal to pass through the nipple hole with ease. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not practical
I tried this nipple when my son was 4 month and was extremely disappointed with the nipple. The flow was way to fast for a 4 month old unless each feeding needed cereal to be added. But at 4 month a lot of babies do not need cereal to be added to the milk. Also as for the 1,2 and 3 level, who has the time and eye sight to look for it during middle of the night feedings...

The Avent Variable Flow Nipples allow formula mixed with cereal to pass through the nipple hole with ease. At a baby's young age, when the flow must still be relatively slow, you can turn the nipple so the Number I that's embossed in the nipple is lined up with the baby's mouth. This allows the formula mixed with cereal to still pass through the nipple hole easily, but doesn't cause the baby to choke due to the formula flowing too quickly. As your baby gets older, you can turn the nipple in his mouth so the Number II is lined up with the baby's mouth and this allows for a quicker flow, and, ultimately to the Number III "setting". The only two negative things I can say about these nipples is that (1) you can't find them in any store. After finding the initial two packs of nipples in a popular baby store, I had to buy the next two packs over the Internet. They weren't available in any store. And (2), there are no instructions with the nipples to explain how the variable flow works and how the numbers correlate with the rate of the flow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for hungry babies and thicker liquids., March 5, 2008
This is quite ingenious! I don't know if any other manufacturers have them, but they are such a great idea. Instead of a hole there is a slot in the top. Around the side are the marks I,II and III. You line up the marks with the baby's nose and that dictates how fast the flow of milk is. This teat allows a thicker liquid to flow through so you can add rice or another cereal of your choice if you need to. My baby is in the 90th percentile and at 8 weeks old Milk just wasn't enough. I put 1 tablespoon of rice in with 4 ounces of milk initially and then later on increased that to 2 tablespoons (all with doctor's approval). It is a much thicker liquid but flowed through this teat easily. I highly recommend these.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST NIPPLE, August 26, 2008
I'm a first time mother of twins that are so different. One likes to drink his milk fast and quick they other takes his time. At first I had all types of different holes in the nipples some would be too big for one baby or too small for the other. This nipple is the BEST! IT'S PERFECT! It has 3 different ways of flow feeding, so it works with both my boys.
I replaced every nipple I had with these. TOTALLY THE BEST NIPPLE!

5.0 out of 5 stars saves money, June 26, 2001

When my 2month little boy started on rice in his bottle I must have gone through 15 playtex nipples just trying to get the hole cut not to big not to small I had enough. I went to the avent web site and it was advertising a thicker flow nipple, so I changed bottles, and got these nipples. They saved me money, (not only on nipples but on liner)but most important no more upset stomics from eating too fast for my little one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Nipple!, June 14, 2001

This review is from: Philips Avent Variable Flow Nipple BPA-Free, 2 Pack (Baby Product)
This nipple is best used for babies 4-6 months and older because of the fast flow. It is especially good when you are using cereal in the bottle; the slant opening helps the milk flow better when it is accompanied with cereal (or a thicker flow). As a matter of fact, this is practically the only time I use the nipple. If your baby is older than 6 months (or a heavy eater via the bottle), it's also best to use the "Fast Flow (4)" nipple without cereal. They last a very long time and you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!, June 9, 2001

This review is from: Philips Avent Variable Flow Nipple BPA-Free, 2 Pack (Baby Product)
My little one is a serious spitter. At four months our pediatrician recommended we thicken his milk (both formula and expressed breast milk) with cereal, and it works great! The variable flow nipple is the only nipple I have found that lets through the thickened milk. At first we used the slow flow (I) position of the nipple and now we use the fast flow (III) position. I like that this nipple grows with my baby and we do not have to buy new nipples every couple of months. Unfortunately, Avent does not have a variable flow nipple for the disposable system. I further found the variable flow nipples hard to find. A lot of baby stores do not sell them. I was happy to see that I could by them on this website!

5.0 out of 5 stars foster mother and mother of over 90 infants, June 3, 2001

This review is from: Philips Avent Variable Flow Nipple BPA-Free, 2 Pack (Baby Product)
I can't begin to tell you how impressed I was to find the avent variable flow nipple and how easily it worked for the cereal thickened formula. In the past, I have had to play with nipples and makes the holes bigger and then buy new nipples or make the formula thicker because I made the holes too big. The variable flow nipple was a real thrill to work with. I discovered this when my daughter chose this brand bottle to supplement her breast feeding. The breast feeding was unsuccessful and she had to go to bottle feeding. However, the baby had reflux and every other bottle came back up. Knowing that the hole size cannot be adjusted in the silicone nipple, I called the company and was told about the variable flow nipple. The only disappointment at this time is that this nipple cannot be found for the disposable bottle. It would be wonderful if you made this nipple available for this bottle also. I will be sure to share this new knowledge with the agency I foster for, all the moms will be thrilled to hear about this.

My baby had serious reflux and our pediatrician advised us to thicken his milk with rice cereal. I spent 2 months buying nipples and trying to enlarge the flow holes until I found these. SO MUCH EASIER!! Really great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Nipple for older infants/toddlers, May 3, 2009

My daughter was put on a rice cereal formula which was thick in texture making it impossible to use the regular nipples without becoming tired or sometimes even giving up & staying hungry. I switched to the Variable Flow, which her doctor had recommended & it was great!! She was able to drink her formula without any difficulties. THANKS AVENT!!!
