3.0 out of 5 stars False sense of security, and we didn't realize it
We bought this monitor because we were very worried about SIDS. Once we started using it, we slept better and felt our baby was much more secure. It worked great at first, and only alarmed when we picked up our baby for a diaper change or feeding and forgot to switch it off (we soon learned to turn it off before picking him up). However, once we started turning it off...

5.0 out of 5 stars We love our Bebe sound and movement monitor, April 26, 2002

Tip #1 the sensor pad can not sit on springs so you'll need a thin board if your mattress doesn't sit on a solid surface.

Tip#2 at first we thought we couldn't turn off the annoying clicking sound unless we didn't want the movement sensor on, we were wrong, you can choose to have the monitor click every time your baby moves or breathes ( unfortunately it also clicks in the baby's room) or you can choose to just have the alarm sound if the monitor doesn't detect movement, no clicking.

Tip#3 Remember to turn the monitor off every time you take your baby out of the crib or you may give your sleeping spouse the scare of his/her life!!

Our baby doesn't seem to sleep very well in her bassinet and took to her crib really well but I couldn't stand it that I couldn't hear her breathing. This was one of the best purchases we made. I didn't want to spend so much but it has been worth the peace of mind. Her room is just across the hall so I don't even need the portable monitor, we've tested the movement sensor and the alarm is loud enough to hear in our room. It's easy to test ( just take the baby out of the crib) Our baby is a very light breather and the monitor works wonderfully, a light flashes with each movement or breath she takes. The alarm sounds if movement isn't detected after 20 seconds.

I highly recommend this product!! ps it can be plugged in or you can use batteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace of Mind Monitor, January 29, 2002
By Kim Traver-Eads (Montgomery, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
I got this monitor as a gift from my mother. I was skeptical about it at first. I had never seen anything like it or heard anything about it. Since my mother bought it, I felt obligated to use it. Now I can't thank her enough. It has been a life safer, literally. My 6 mo old daughter had stopped breathing one night and the motion sensor alerted us. We were sleeping. If it weren't for the sensor I would never have known. We've had false alarms too, since she's a wiggle worm and scoots to the very corners of her crib. But I would rather get up every time the alarm sounds then not have an alarm at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Love it!, February 8, 2002
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
We bought this same monitor as a Safety 1st Angelcare monitor for my granddaughter and wouldn't be without it. My daughter and granddaughter have lived with us until she is ten months old and I will be buying another one of these monitors for her backup crib at our home when she moves out.

I was one of those who returned the first one I bought to the store because I thought it was defective, but I was determined to get the replacement to work and followed the instructions very carefully and found that I was the problem not the monitor.

We have had false alarms, and some not so false alarms, and I will get up for as many false alarms as it takes to be there when the real alarm goes off. The peace of mind this monitor
provides is priceless.

If you buy one make sure you follow the instructions and adjust it properly and you will love it.

My granddaughter was such a light breather as a newborn that you could not tell if she was breathing, but the light on the Angelcare monitor was always able to show her slightest movements.

We Love It!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS & GET SOME SLEEP!!, December 18, 2002

What is peace of mind worth to you?...

At a glance you can see that your baby is breathing because each time she breathes a little light flashes! You don't have to walk into the room and risk waking the baby up.

Some people complain of false alarms, and in the year we've had this item we've had about 4 false alarms. The pad is quite small and if baby rolls into a crib corner, or just breathes very shallow (which they do from time to time), then the monitor will go off. It also chirps when the battery is getting low, which will scare you but it's better than not letting you know. Regardless, I'd rather have a false alarm than no alarm when something is really wrong.

This is a trustworthy device, and as first time parents we were terrified that something might happen to her when were weren't watching.

This is the best purchase we've ever made. I definitely recommend it to all worried parents--which is probably most of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the worrying parent, June 7, 2003
By Southernreign "SR" (Charlotte, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
Let me start off by saying, works flawlessly for my 4 pound 3 ounce son. What peace of mind it has given my wife and I, we can sleep. This monitor runs off a 46/49 mhz signal which is far less crowded these days due to everyone having all the long range 900 mhz cordless phones and 2.4 ghz cordless phone, 2.4 ghz wireless computer routers, and even microwaves ovens. It isn't a crystal clear quiet monitor, but it has less static then some of the other 900 mhz straight baby monitors I've tried.

Story: My wife and I are on our second preemie child, the first was ten years ago when our daughter was born at 1 pound 11 ounces; she came home after 82 days at 5 pounds 2 ounces on a bradycardia and apnea monitor and caffeine. Our son was born at 3 pounds 2 ounces and he had done so well in the hospital from day one that the doctors told us that he would be going home soon, without any monitoring system. My wife and I got filled with a lot of anxiety. When you sit in the hospital for weeks and months day and night with constant hospital bradycardia (low/no heart rate) and apnea (low/no breathing) monitoring you get quite co-dependant on it.

My wife had seen this device advertised in a baby magazine and asked me what I had thought about its monitoring capabilities. I looked it up here on the Web and read all the reviews like you are doing now and was convinced that it was at least worth the[money] for a little peace of mind and we needed a baby monitor anyway. .... I was very skeptical about it's sensitivity, well we bought it before our son was released from the hospital, and I set it up in the crib between a piece of plywood and the baby mattress. I tested it out by just barely touching the mattress to mimic a very short shallow baby breath and it would detect it. "Amazing!!!" I thought. I could not wait to see how it would work for the baby.

Well, after a $90,000 hospital stay in the NICU he finally came home after being in the hospital for just over 28 days at 4 pounds 3 ounces, and the hospital did send him home on a bradycardia and apnea monitor, the company `Healthdyne Technologies' that leases these hospital grade bradycardia and apnea machines told me that they can be rented for $250.00 per month by anyone if insurance wouldn't cover it. This machine attaches underneath your child clothes around a foam belt that raps around that chest area, this is really the only way of truly preventing SIDS, because SIDS can occur in a crib, bassinet, car seat, baby swing, day care center, babysitters etc, but isn't even 100% successful if there isn't anyone around to HEAR the alarm and RESPOND to `Rescue' the infant.

We had our son sleeping in bassinet when he first came home with the BeBe monitor working and hospital grade monitor. I was amazed how the BEBE monitor was half a second behind the bradycardia and apnea monitor. I figure it was probably in the lower grade receiving circuitry in the BeBe monitor. It would detect all but the most shallow of breaths, and even then it would only miss one out a 30, it had no false alarms. Our son would have pauses in breathing that would show up on the bradycardia and apnea monitor that would last 5-7 seconds and the TIC on the BeBe monitor would be silent too so I knew it was working perfectly too. Both the hospital grade monitor and the BeBe Monitor are set at a 20 second apnea delay and then would give loud alarms which would wake the child back into breathing again and alarm the parents to `rescue' the infant if still needed.
Definitely gives us peace of mind knowing when the hospital monitor returns it a few week, we'll still have some apnea protection while we are all sleeping.

So as the warning label on the BeBe Angelcare-Monitor states: "This machine will not prevent SIDS." Just remember, if you can't respond to the alarm and `Rescue' your baby, SIDS will not be prevented. 62 out 100,000 babies born die of SIDS yearly in the USA. That's 2000 infants die each year in the US. Mostly were preventable. 1 out of 5 die in day care centers. Remember to always have your baby sleep on his/her back. And have the mattress slightly elevated at 30 degrees to prevent any reflux disorder from feedings.
Do not over dress, or over cover your child with blankets, over heating is also thought to be a cause of SIDS. Dress/cover them no more then what you would dress/cover yourself.
Best $100.00 bucks you can spend for your little one. That's my two cents. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT...Please read my thorough review!, October 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
I, like many other nervous new mommies, lost ALOT of sleep before purchasing this product. The threat of SIDS scared me to death - I could barely sleep and I always feared waking up to a non-breathing baby...I bought this monitor when my son was almost 3 months old ( I wish I had known about it sooner! ), and have found it to be a big sanity saver! It is so reassuring to hear the "tic" noise, as well as see the blinking light to indicate movement being sensed.

FIRST - YES, you *do* need to have a hard, flat surface under the mattress for this to work properly. Luckily, our crib was the perfect setup, so we didn't need to insert any board to use this monitor. Prior to moving him into the crib, it worked wonderfully in his bassinette as well!

SECONDLY, *TEST* the monitor's sensitivity to determine what in your house MAY interfere with the sensor pad! Think of the variables in your home. Yes, ceiling fans might, but also think about your washing machine ( some aren't balanced well on wash/spin cycles, and may cause vibration in your home ), stereo systems ( some have loud bass which also causes vibration when volume is up ), etc. We have a ceiling fan in our living room, which is directly under our son's room, so I won't even run that ceiling fan when he is in his crib. Test it out thoroughly to be sure that you have it on the most effective sensitivity setting...test *with* and *without* the baby in the crib...test it with weighted pillows, the family pet or a sack of pototoes in the crib...whatever! Just put it to the test to ensure that it is working properly for *your* individual set up! Test it frequently, just for extra assuredness. We have only had two false alarms - the first, we were using it in a travel bassinette ( not the proper set up for this product ) and knew that a false alarm would likely happen due to that circumstance and the second, last night - when my son scooted WAY down to the foot of the crib, out of the sensor pad's range. I'd rather have a false alarm, then the REAL thing anyday!

Some reviewers have reported that when they *forget* to turn it off after lifting the baby from the crib, the alarm sounds...well, DUH! It just goes to show that the product works! I have yet to forget to turn it off...I do that BEFORE picking my son up from his crib. And besides, think of the accidental alarm as a drill...and so what if your spouse is in the room with the parent monitor and you forgot to turn it off...being awoken in the middle of the night JUST COMES WITH BEING A NEW PARENT! Consider it practice ( or revenge! ) for the spouse who gets to stay in bed while YOU tend to baby! You'll learn by habit to turn the alarm off when the baby is not in the crib. I just turn the switch in the back to "sound only" so that it doesn't affect the parent monitor! Problem solved!

If I could improve the product, I would do the following:

*Increase the size of the sensor pad - make it longer to allow for the length of the standard crib mattress - although then it would be too long to use in a bassinette.

*Make the parent monitor with a rechargeable battery.

*Add a second light to the parent monitor to allow parents to see the blinking light when "tic" feature is silenced. Seeing that blinking light *IS* very reassuring!

Other than that, I give this product a five star rating, for the peace of mind it has given me! IT REALLY IS A "MUST HAVE"! I have recommended it to several expecting friends, and they have registered for it or purchased it based on my review of it. We go to such great lengths to ensure that our little ones are safe, that the $100 price tag is irrelevant compared to the performance of this product, and the peace of mind it gives to new parents. I would have paid TEN times more for it if I had to, simply because I value my son's safety and consider it a HIGH priority. When used PROPERLY, this is a great investment! The sound on the monitor is mostly clear, but certain things ( microwaves, cordless phones ) may also cause interference or static...as with ALL monitors on the market. I also have a Fisher Price monitor, and that thing is the WORST - terrible squealing feedback noises and static. I prefer the Angel Sounds monitor over that one, hands down! The big selling point of this product is the motion sensor pad. IT IS WORTH IT!

Again, I HIGHLY recommend this product to all expecting and new parents!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't live without this., September 19, 2002

I was so worried that I would look into my baby's crib and discover that she hadn't been breathing for quite some time. I would check on her every few minutes (even during the night which made for the worse sleep ever). I was in a terrible panic. Then I found this monitor.

It has a "tick" with every movement, so you can listen to how much your child is moving around. (Of course, you can turn the tick off.) It does a pretty impresive job of picking up sound. Plus it has lights that grab your attention visually when your baby makes noise. The combination of features on this thing is wonderful.

I'm so happy I found it. I can finally let my child sleep without the fear of SIDS. I now purchase it for every one of my friends who discover that they are expecting. I don't know how I ever lived without it.

False alarms...yes, but only when I've forgotten to turn off the motion sensor, picked up my baby out of the crib, and left the room. It doesn't annoy me though. It just reminds me that it's working. I'd rather have a few false positive alarms than no alarm at all only to find that my child wasn't breathing and I didn't know about it.

(And YES it actually detects your child's breathing!)

It's worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product and well worth the extra $, June 24, 2002
By Robert A Cimino (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
We bought this product originally so as to monitor our newborn and give us piece of mind. But as it turned out, in the first month or so, our baby slept in a basinet which could not accomodate the sensor pad! But, after the second month, once she started sleeping in her crib, we started using the movement sensor and have been grateful ever since. We are especially appreciative now (at month 4) now that she rolls over and sleeps a lot on her belly, the movement monitor assures us she is ok.
By the way, the sound portion of this product is excellent to. We also rec'd another name brand sound only monitor, and this product beats it hands down - for range and clarity.
As for false alarms, we've had about 2-3 in 2 months - and it was stictly due to our baby moving to the bottom of her crib and off the sensor pad. I can't stress enough how much we love this product - highly recommedned...A+++

5.0 out of 5 stars best investment ever made, May 5, 2003

This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
This truly is the best money we have ever spent. This is our third child and I can honestly say we are sleeping much better now that we have this monitor. I cannot begin to describe the peace of mind that comes with the extra protection this product provides. It is so nice to be able to look over at the monitor when I wake up at night and know that he's ok without having to get up so many times to check on him. I was a little hesistant to purchase it after reading some of the reviews describing false alarms, difficultly adjusting the sensitivity, and interference, however we have not had any of these problems. It took about ten minutes to set up, and I followed the directions to not adjust the sensitivity unless necessary. It worked from the very beginning, and we have never had a false alarm! (except when we take the baby out of the crib and forget to turn the monitor off--which only assures us that it is still working properly). He is eight months old now and even with his tossing and turning, he has never strayed far enough from the sensor to set off the alarm. I am so thankful for this product--it truly is a Godsend! I would highly recommend it for anyone who has a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peaceful nights, April 16, 2002
This review is from: BébéSounds Angelcare Movement Sensor Blister Package (Baby Product)
I've now had this monitor for 3 months and love it. I did a lot of research on monitors and liked this one. Some reviewers had a few complaints like static and false alarms.

I do get static on my unit and the nursery is just in the other room. I just turn the unit to the lowest setting and it doesn't bother us ( you get used to it). The alarm sounds on both units, but I'm able to hear it from the nursery. The parents' unit has bright flashing lights so as long as they are showing, I'm relaxed. There are times he stops moving (the lights stop for 10-15 seconds), but he starts up again. So even though 20 seconds seems like a long time, it's sort of a buffer for false alarms.

The other complaint was false alarms due to squirming babies. I have yet to have a false alarm and my son is all over the crib. Read the instructions- they reccomend placing a piece of plywood under the mattress. Then you place the monitor pad on top of it. It seems like a pain, but the wood actually helps pick up even the slighest movements.

At first, I was skeptical about it working through so many layers, so I tried it out on my cat. He went to sleep and I went into the other room. 20 seconds after he jumped out of the crib, the alarm sounded.

I've slept peacefully knowing that if my son were to stop breathing, the alarm would go off. This morning, it did for the first time, but by the time I was able to get to him (just a few seconds), he had resumed breathing. I think the alarm sounding in the nursery may have startled the him enough to get him breathing again. Since he did set it off today, I plan to take the unit with me to use in his pack-n-play when we travel, otherwise I know I will not sleep well.

I've heard too many stories about children being taken from their rooms in the middle of the night, and of course SIDS. Even though this monitor is a bit pricey, it's worth it in my book. I am able to sleep peacefully knowing that my son is in his crib safe and sound.
