great with minor adjustments
We recieved this off our registry when our daughter turned 3 months. She loves it and so do we. But beware, you have to lay them with the toys at thier legs to able to see the lights and the low volume is really LOUD! We can hear it three rooms away quite loudly. We covered the speakers to mute it a little. It could use a notch lower on the volume control.

Extremely Versatile, July 29, 2003
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
We bought this toy when our son was just two months old and he loves it. We are at five months now and he still gets a huge kick out of it.
There are so many ways to play! At first we'd lay him on his back an he would swat at the dangling rattles. They are bright and attention-getting. When he'd hit one, music would play and the lights would flash; it kept his attention. It didn't take much effort, and helped develop his coordination. There aren't many toys a two-month-old will play with. Then he learned that he could push the buttons to play and change songs.
The toy is re-positionable, so it can be used when the baby is laying down, with the rattles hanging. Tilt it at 45 degrees and sit him in a bouncer or car seat under it. At 90 degrees when he's standing (we still have to help him stand). And with a switch in the legs' configuration, it can be positioned so that he sits and plays.
There are (at least) 6 sound modes, ranging from one button playing a whole song, through pressing buttons that prompt a song to continue, to one button being a single tone (like a keyboard).
We love this toy and so does our son. It is good for just about everything except tummy time. We expect to get at least a year out of the developmental value.
Just another two things about it: it is very sturdy construction, but not a good toy to balance or lean on, and it is EASY to reconfigure.
Update: Our son is now 3.5 years and STILL plays with this toy. We put it away a while and when our daughter was born, brought it out for her, and he plays with it every chance he gets. We just change the settings to single notes for him and he still gets a thrill from it. It was completely worth our investment! And, of course, our daughter also loves it.]
Second Update: Our son (now 6) and daughter (now 4) played with this until last month, when we *finally* gave it to a friend's daughter, who also loves it. So far, hands-down, this toy has been well worth every penny we paid for it. So durable that even with six years of play between two kids, it's still as good as new, with just a few scuffs from wear.

useful lying down, sitting or standing, May 7, 2003
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
We have the Sparkling Symphony Gym at home, and just got this gym at my baby's grandparents' house. I like this better because you can convert it for a baby to play lying down, sitting or standing, while the SSG works only lying down or standing (not sitting). My 7-mo-old is at the sitting stage so this is perfect for her, and will last quite a long time as she can use it while standing. The music is quite nice -- something you won't get sick of when listening to it over and over. It's very easy to put together. My baby seems to love it -- she whacks at the keys, smiles really big, and bounces her whole body up and down as she plays the piano.

Very Entertaining, March 19, 2003
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
This is a very entertaining and educational toy. I also like the fact that it allows you to interact wtih your baby. My 5-month-old daughter just lights up when I get down on the floor with her and pick out songs on the piano and sing to her. Yes, you really can pick out a few simple songs ("Mary Had a Little Lamb," etc.) on the piano when you have it set at #3.My daughter does spend quite a lot of time playing with this. She really likes to watch the stars light up. She started out just batting at the hanging pieces, but now she actively holds onto them and is pleased when she can make noises with them. She will even reach up and bang on the keys every once in awhile. There is a volume control on the back of this, but so far I haven't found it useful to have it on the louder setting. The low is just fine. I am impressed with the way this activity gym converts for when she is older. I am looking forward to her playing with this for a long time.

This toy is a MUST!!!, July 28, 2004
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
What would you pay for a toy that entertains your child, makes them smile and giggle with delight and plays some of the best toy music youve ever heard? Well Id pay a lot more than the
price for this toy!
I never thought Id buy a musical toy, they all annoyed me! But
I saw this toy online and checked out the sound at TRU and I bought it. I bought it for my now 6 month old when she turned 3 months and she has loved it from the day we brought it home!
I love that this is a toy that will grow with your baby from laying on the floor, sitting to standing. And at each phase the toy performs differently teaching your baby new things.
There is absolutly nothing about this toy that we dont like. She plays with it for 20-40 minutes at a time since we gave it to her! Which allowed me to take a shower, eat something, etc.
This is a fantastic toy and one that your baby will love and grow into for a long time.

Grows w/ your child, March 15, 2005
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
I love this toy. I love toys that grow w/ your child and this is definately one of them. My baby is over 5 months old so she constantly swats at the dangling toys. When my daughter was younger, I had the music playing constantly, but now that shes able to swat and grab I put the setting on when the dangling toys gets hit. My daughter isnt able to sit up yet, but when the time comes I will be able to convert it so the toy will be in front of her.

Budding Maestro, March 9, 2005
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
Our daughter has loved this toy/instrument since she was very young. You're first supposed to just let your baby play with the hanging toys, but we found that if we put the piano on the lowest height and angled the keys down (so they are vertical rather than the normal horizontal of a keyboard) our daughter loved to kick at the keys. When she got older we put it horizontal and she would sit at it and play it with her hands, and it was only then that she would become interested in the dangling toys occasionally.
We removed the back "spoiler" thing -- seemed a little dangerous and didn't really add anything.
The one thing I'd change would be to have the keys light up rather than the stars. She keeps wanting to press the stars, but they don't do anything.

Mezmorizes my 3 month old!, February 5, 2005
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
After a lot of great reviews, I decided to register for this. When my son was two months old, he would lay mezmoried underneath the lights and the music - sometimes up to 20 minutes (just enough time for a quick shower!) Now that he's 3-months-old he is so into hitting the hanging toys and making it play music by himself. He gets so excited and his eyes just light up! Since it converts for an older baby I know we will get a lot of use out of it later too. I would definitely recommend it!

Fisher Price does it again!, December 9, 2003
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
This is one of my favorite toys! My daughter started using this at about two months old. I'd lie her on the floor and she'd either bat at the hanging toys or kick at them like crazy for minutes on end. She loved the music and the lights. In fact, the minute I bought the thing out she would smile and squeal with delight. This toy bought her many hours of joy over the months. When she learned how to crawl we put it into the upright position and she would pull up on it to bang on the keys. As she learned to cruise she would push it all around the house. Now that she's a pro walker she still plays with it on occasion but I look back fondly on the days when this is the only toy that could truly captivate her attention. This toy is very durable and I think it's such a small price to pay for something that will most likely bring your child such sheer delight. I would recommend this to ANYONE at ANYTIME. It's bound to be a hit in your house, it sure was in mine.

A must 1st toy!!, September 25, 2003
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
I bought this item for my 6 week old baby boy Hayden, and the first few times I layed him under the gym he was only slightly amused and layed there for only about 5 minutes. As the weeks passed he became more aware and would stare at the stars that danced around to the beat of the music. By 12 weeks he was actively reaching and hitting at the dangling rattles. He would lay there for a half N hour or more happy and content. I often bring my baby to my office and haveing a toy that holds my baby's attention is very helpful. I like that all the stars and rattles have smiling faces, its bright and eye appealing and you cant help but to smile while your watching your baby learn to reach and roll. This is a toy that grows with your baby and that was a selling point for me. My baby is now 4 half months and is learning to sit up, soon I'll be adjusting the toy to a for a sitting position. I've found that you'll pay more for most play mats or gyms than the classical chorus and will only be able to use it for about 2 or 3 months. I'm very pleased I made this purchase and would highly recommend this product to anyone who is interested in buying a quality toy.

Mom and son both love it!, March 3, 2005
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: FISHER PRICE SINGING STAR GYM (Toy)
I am so happy w/ this purchase! It was extremely easy and quick to assemble, w/out having to use any tools. The lights are wonderful, as well as the music. It's so soothing to both my son and I. Such a wonderful investment in a toy, especially since it's so versatile and he'll be able to use it for years to come.
