I originally purchased this unit for my child's room 2 years ago -- worked fine. There was no soaked carpet, no leaks, no fires, and no problems finding filters. I even liked the level of sound - it would get loud gradually. My child (now 2 yrs old) loved the sound so much we had to find a sound machine to duplicate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Works Good, December 14, 2006

This humidifier is cheaper than most, especially if you buy something else from the same manufacturer (the $10 off $30 coupon helps out).

It only has two speeds, low and high. HIgh is somewhat noisy, but what you would expect. However low is whisper quiet, you can't even really tell it's on at all. I have a somewhat large room 17x14 or so, and it easily keeps it humid in here (I have a clock that has humidity on it, and can see the difference). As far as replacement filters, it appears as those are reasonable as well.

It doesn't have any real features, but it works and it has worked well for me so far with no complains. Quiet, cheap, and humidifes, it's win-win.

I even liked the level of sound - it would get loud gradually. My child (now 2 yrs old) loved the sound so much we had to find a sound machine to duplicate it.

We purchased another unit for our second child's room. Strangely, this unit worked differently than the first. The second one leaked (very litte - nothing a hand towel under the unit couldn't fix) and was MUCH louder than the first. I also found that I needed to refill this unit more often than I did the first.

I didn't see too much of a problem with the difference, just thought it was worth mentioning...

4.0 out of 5 stars My Dry Room is Renewed..., January 6, 2005

I started getting sick, and for the first time since grade school had a bloody nose. That coupled with getting dry mouthed and dry skin and chapped lips every morning made me consider a humidifer.

When I went to the store I wanted a cool mist one, as cool mist would be nice in my room that is hot and dry during the winter. I expecte a misting machine, this thing doesnt mist, but I'm happy it doesn't after reading all the review of people with soggy carpets because of their misters...

Since having this I haven't felt as dry in the morning which is nice, I breathe easier and started feeling better. It a little louder than some but if you dont like the noise, turn down the speed to lower at night, I personally like some background noise and keep it on high.

The water last for a long time in these ones that use these wicks. There is only one downfall, mine is about a month old and the filter is getting pretty nasty already, although I admit my room is a dusty place and I've been using tap water. Apparently if you use those cheap 1 gallon Distilled waters the filter wont get all dirty or smelly as easily, as distilled water is pure, and tap water well....no matter what you think isn't ;).

PRO: Humidifies room with few refills and doesn't soak room.
CONS: The filter gets moldy/dirty pretty quick.

Hopefully this is usefull, I'm happy with it and I'm sure you'd be.

When I purchased this humidifier and set it up, I expected after a couple of hours to walk into my son's room and be able to noticably tell that the humidifier was on. I couldn't tell at all. The room felt just as it did a few hours earlier. With those old humidifiers that I grew up on, I was used to being able to see the humidified air coming out, and to have the room feeling almost muggy. I guess that's what I expected.
At first, I was a little bothered that I couldn't physically tell it was on and working. But, after running it for 3 days in a row now, my sons stuffy nose and cough have remarkably subsided, there's no moisture buildup anywhere in the room, and my son is sleeping better.
So, although you don't see or feel this humidifier working, it seems to have done really well in alleviating my sons cold symptoms. I am definitely becoming a fan of the evaporative technology this humidifier uses in controlling condensation build-up.
Bottom Line: If you buy this humidifier, be patient with it. Don't assume it's not working. You have to just watch for it to alleviate symptoms. You will NOT feel or see this thing working, but it has done wonders for my son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, June 22, 2006

I have used this product for about 4-years now, same unit and still works great and I run it all night every night. I bought it when my daughter was sick on recommendation from the doctor and continued using it for the white noise created at the high speed. My daughter never slept well and this white noise helped her a lot. It also makes a huge difference in the air, when I forget to turn it on at night now I know in the morning it was not on because I wake up thirsty. Like with anything, you have to complete proper maintenance...keep it filled with water, change filters as needed, and clean at least twice a month to keep the mold out. -- NOTE: The maintenance recommendation to run once a week with no water is only as long as it takes to dry the filter out and keep mold from growing on the filter. ALSO, if you do not properly screw the bottom back on after filling, the unit will leak. If properly screwed on, it will not. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of all I have ever used!, August 19, 2005

Humdifiers use fans to push moisture into the air, so expect some noise - fans are never completely quiet.

But, on the low setting the fan is the quietist of any I have owned, and on the high setting the fan is quite audible. Even so it is quieter than any I have owned before.

This humidifier is easy to operate, fill and clean. They thought of everything in the product design, including making the tank sit flat when you turn it over to fill it up.

I have found that for most operation the low setting works well and the water lasts at least 18 hours. Over a gallon of water a day into my room seems more than adequate for most needs.

In fact I enjoy this machine so much I run it every night in order to keep the room nicely humidified, especially since cleaning and filling is such a snap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but..., April 17, 2008
By Greg Heist "gheist" (Utica, MI) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Health and Beauty)

I've had this particular humidifier for approximately a year now, and I have to say overall that it does a pretty darn good job. It has been reliable and I can definitely tell the difference in humidity in the room when it's operating.

There are a couple of "buts" that a prospective buyer should be aware of:

First, if you don't correctly and firmly re-seat the reservoir in the base, you're going to have water everywhere. Both my wife and I have inadvertently created a puddle of water on the counter and floor simply by putting the darn thing in crooked. Kind of a design flaw in my opinion, but in the long term, not anything that would make me hesitant to recommend this product.

The second thing to know is that the filters for this unit (which are about $5 apiece) don't last more than 2 weeks during daily use. I'm sure it's good that they don't last forever, and based on the discoloration on them it's pretty clear they're doing their job, but be aware that this will be an ongoing expense when using this product.

All in all, a pretty nice unit, albeit with the caveats listed above!

4.0 out of 5 stars cool and warm humidifiers, December 23, 2008
This review is from: Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Health and Beauty)
I purchased the vicks cool mist humidifier (v3100) while visiting my family in Utah for the holidays. I had a sore throat and that mixed with the heater running and the already very dry air and i was getting up to get a drink 4 times a night. the first night i spent with the humidifier i didn't get up at all. i decided to leave it there and use it every time i visit, summer or fall. and i liked having a humidifier so much i bought a warm mist one, the v745a for my chicago apartment. here is a comparison of the two.

i bought the cool mist for the desert because it was cheaper and will only be used a few weeks a year but will be both summer and winter. it does blow a lot of cool air and will be especially nice in the summer. some people found it quite loud but i thought it was reasonable and used it on the high setting. but i am also used to sleeping with a fan on during the summer. i liked the fact that its shape is lower to the ground making it difficult to tip over. and the seal for the water tank is easier to open and close all the way to prevent leaks. but even after one week's use at night the filter is already more yellow than i expected. if i was using it every day i would have to change it very regularly. it also does move a lot of air like i said before, but the vents are low and it seemed like it was blowing all that moist air right under the bed.

i bought the warm mist humidifier for my apartment because i will only be using it in the winter and didn't want the cold air when my heater is aready working so hard. and i figured it would be more useful during cold season because of the attached medicine cup. it is also for medium/large rooms while the cool mist is for smal/medium so i could move it to my living room if needed. and because i saw the filter on the cool mist got so dirty so fast i liked the fact that this one had no filter, no parts to replace. just weekly cleaning. and the cost difference between this one and the cool mist is about the cost of one filter replacement. it makes very little difference in terms of air temperature, does not heat it up as much as i thought it would, vs the cool mist which did make the room quite a bit cooler. i like the fact that the steam comes out of the top instead of under the bed and it is more quiet than the cool mist even when on the high setting. it does have automatic shut off so i don't have to worry about it boiling dry. i did some research online about warm vs cool humidifiers before purchasing them, and many recommended cool mist for children because of burn risk from using the warm. even after being on all night the unit is cool to the touch and it has a cooling chamber so even the steam that comes out is unlikely to burn. the only way i think a child could injure themselves with this unit would be if they tipped it over, took it apart and touched the actual heating unit because of the auto shut off. my husband guessed the warm mist might take more electricity to run but we'll have to see about that.

overall i am a little happier with the warm mist because i need it for winter, it is quieter and needs to filters replaced. but they are both excellent and inexpensive and once you get one you will wonder why you waited so long. (and by the way the cool mist is $29.99 at target and the warm is $34.99, sorry amazon)

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathing easy in Afghanistan, March 9, 2007
By T. Singleton (Afghanistan) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Health and Beauty)
I ordered this product to help me breathe better during my stay in Afghanistan; even during the rainy season here the air here is very dry and full of dust. I am very pleased with this product. I keep the humidifier on a shelf four feet above the floor and pointing toward the head of my bed about eight feet away. I fill it ONLY with bottled water and have had it running 24 hours a day on its low setting for a month now. I am also still on the original wicking filter which has survived the dust surprisingly well. I have noticed that when I turn it back on after refilling the reservoir that the fan runs slower than normal in the low mode, but this takes care of itself after a short while. I have had no problems with moisture build-up on the floor or walls. I also haven't had any problems with "white residue", probably due to using bottled water. I am the only person in my living quarters not suffering from nose bleeds due to dry air. Again, I am very satisfied with this product. My only complaint is with the shipping, the company does not ship to APO / FPO addresses as they do not use the USPS.
