3.0 out of 5 stars Super comfortable, but too loud
I've been using an S12 for two years now and really enjoy the comfortable headset. I am on the phone for up to four hours per day and don't get any ear fatigue or shoulder problems, but do find that the speaker is too loud, even on the lowest settings with my AT&T two line phone.

Honestly, I bought the Plantronics S12 for the looks and for the price. Now that I am using it, I have discovered that it is much better than the higher priced units that are being used around my office.

On the left hand side of the unit there is a sliding switch so that you can modulate the headset to your telephone. This worked for me out of the box. Depending on your telephone, you may have some hiss on the line, but I have none.

On the right hand side there is a switch to set the microphone between high and low gain, and there is a dial to fine tune it within each of the settings. Out of the box, I sounded very loud in the ear piece and people could hear me typing. I set it to low gain, and moved the dial to the lowest setting. People can still hear me fine, I cannot hear myself in the speaker, and no one can hear me typing. This is fantastic! My previous headset could not turn down the gain this low, now I can use the mute button less!

The headset flashes a red light when you are on the phone. People will now know that they can interrupt even if you have your headset on, they just need to check for the flashing light. There will be a learning curve for this in my office, but it is a great idea.

And finally, the amplifier bas has a holder for the headset, a simple but wonderful idea that does not work so well with the over the head configuration, but it still works.

The only problem is that the Plantronics S12 has no battery backup. But if the power is out at the office, there is only so much you can do on the phone anyway and you don't need a headset then since you cannot type on your computer anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars not sure why you'd need anything else, October 31, 2005

this headset system is perfect. works like a charm in the office. I'm in sales, so i need to have a phone system that presents professionalism not just in words but also in sound quality. Crisp sounds is what I get from the other end ...and from my end, listeners get clear communication throughout.

save yourself the $200 it'd cost to get the hardcore separate models and get this all in one package. it's worked wonders here for me..

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS is the one, November 8, 2006
This review is from: Plantronics S12 Corded Telephone Headset System (Electronics)
This is the one; the best head set for corded phones on the market. Plug into (virtually) any one or two line phone. It plugs into the phone where the head set goes (and the head set plugs into it).

Your choice of over the ear or over the head and the microphone is the best I've used, in either case. A 3 minute test call to a friend, and your out going volume is perfected and stays right for every call. You have volume control for listening (boost those quiet talkers) and noise suppression) with two very big buttons: one to switch from headset to phone, and one to mute. There is a well-done holder for the headset, and good indicator lights (on headset, power on, and mute).

Plus it is Plantronics, so it is built right (and you pay for it, but not as much as you might).

I am told repeatedly that the quality *improves* when i use the headset than when I go back to the phone itself.

In short, nothing else comes close. HIGHLY recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product for Light Use, May 14, 2007
By Uncle Max "Max" (Colorado Springs, Colorado United States) - See all my reviews

We tried this model as an alternative to more expensive headphone systems. Everyone was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality on both transmitting and receiving. We had no problems with funtionality. The system includes a power adaptor, which is an extra cost feature on some headset systems. It is complete and ready to use, right out of the box. Durability is good. If you want a headset for 24/7 use by multiple people, I would consider a more durable (and expensive!) system. Example: the headset wires are relatively slender, making me wonder how the lines will wear over time. The biggest negative we had is someone wanted a quick connect/disconnect feature, which would allow a user to quickly disconnect from the desk unit while keeping the headset on their head. So this is not the unit for you if you need that feature. However if you need a headset for light to medium duty use without dropping a lot of cash, I would recommend this unit. We liked it so well, we bought four more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Value!!!, April 10, 2007
This review is from: Plantronics S12 Corded Telephone Headset System (Electronics)
I've been using my Plantronics S12 system for a few weeks now and, I have to say, I am so happy that I chose this system for my home call center. The incoming calls are crystal clear and I don't seem to have any problems with the customers hearing me. You can pay a lot more for a different system, but it's not necessary. You still have to have a corded phone to go with this system, but I already had an old phone and it works fine. Reading these reviews helped me choose this product, so that's why I'm writing my review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Works well first but doesn't last, April 12, 2006
This review is from: Plantronics S12 Corded Telephone Headset System (Electronics)
I have had the S12 for 2 years now, and although it worked flawlessly in the beginning, the quality degrades over the year to the point whereby it becomes unusable. First the channels die (there are six on the side) currently only 4 of these work. The transmit quality degrades, noise gets introduced in both transmit and receive streams and the noise gets so loud while the receiving quality gets so bad, that you can no longer use it. I like plantronics, it is the best company out there, but this product only has a shelf life of about 2 yrs. I am now shopping for another plantronics product that works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, July 31, 2008
This review is from: Plantronics S12 Corded Telephone Headset System (Electronics)
Its around $200 to get this configuration direct through plantronics site (getting a headset and amp together, about $80 separately at the cheapest), didn't look up exact same model# but I couldn't find anything on their website that would match amazon's price for both a headset and amp. I went through 2 other headsets to find the right one. 1st one (about $15, over the head, one ear) was simply a headset to connect to the headset port on the phone, volume was way too low, both ways; especially on my end. 2nd (about $30, over the ear piece) was also headset port connected, same thing. They were cheap yes, but you get what you pay for. They simply were insufficient.

This one is superior. Instructions are easy, all I did was follow the pictures. I can hear the caller, and they can hear me, it's easy to adjust volume if they're too loud or too low or if I'm too low or if I don't want them to hear my background noise.

Worth the price. The headset cord is long enough for me to stand up and move around w/o tugging everything off the desk and it doesn't coil/tangle. The ear piece is comfortable (I use it on average, 12 hours a day, 5 days a week).

The mouth piece flashes red when there's activity on the phone so a person trying to talk to you in the room will know when you're on a call. It seems to blink when it picks up sound in general though, even when there is no call, except when you have the mute button on. It would be nice to have a binaural headset (but they are uber expensive, the nice ones), but since the volume can be adjusted it's no big deal. With one ear piece, at least I can hear what's going on around me just in case of an emergency or something.

I hear no static, no fuzz. The plugs (w/the exception of the AC adapter) looks like a mini RJ-45/phone plug. It's the same plug that the receiver on a corded phone plugs into. The headset itself has the same "mini phone plug" which plugs into the adapter, obviously. But because of these types of plugs, it's held into the outlets of the phone and amp securely. So there's no jiggling around that can happen, which usually happens to the plugs on typical headphones/headsets (the 2.5mm kind, etc).

I would highly recommend this product.

I had also gotten the phone that was suggested to get with this, but it was purchased several months before getting this headset system. They work great together. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-KX-TS105B-Corded-Speakerphone-Black/dp/B000090WE9/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a great product - use it with GE Slimline ($10.00), February 13, 2008
This review is from: Plantronics S12 Corded Telephone Headset System (Electronics)
Plantronics S12 Telephone Headset System

I am honestly very happy with the product - once you know how to play around with the settings, it works nicely with different phone systems. Mon-Thu I use it in Office and Fri-Sun I use it in home office. At home I couple it with a typical GE Slimline Corded Phone ($9.99). In order to make calls, you need one since this gadget is a mere amplifier and does not have number pad. The In-Call indicator light is very helpful to let people around you know that you are in the middle of a conversation.

I think this is a must for anyone who talks on phone for hours while working on computers (to keep your hand free). Unlike cordless phone with headsets, this one relieves you from the worry of battery drainage since it's on power always.

In order to set the system, read the manual very carefully - word by word. Try various setting by calling your own cell from this gadget and listening to your own voice.

The only negatives I could think of are - the cloth clip is bad - it could damage the headset cord permanently by squeezing it between the platic joint - I replaced it with a cloth clip I had from an old cellphone headset.

As for the covertible headset which could also be rearranged as around-the-ear-fitting - I won't recommend that. The headset is heavy for your poor ear to take up the load for hours unless you are interested to have a dog-ear !!!

The Plantronics s12 Corded Telephone Headset one of the best tools you can have on your desk. It allows you hands free access to your keyboard, especially if you use more than one software program during your daily task at work. No more of that dangerous holding your telephone under your chin while you use the cooputer we all know that is the primary cause of pain in the nec and back area. My next purchase will be a cordless model. I recomend this product very highly.
