5.0 out of 5 stars These are the best - sturdy, great sound, easy to untangle!
I've tried a lot of portable headphones. I really wanted something retractable, but the wires in those are so fragile. These have a VERY sturdy cable which is easy to untangle, and great sound. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the MDR-J10
I bought these headphones today and I am really dissapointed by them. I used to own the MDR-J10's and really enjoyed using them while I exercised. I lost those and replaced them with these, only to find out that they are don't work for me quite as well. I lost those and replaced them with these, only to find out that they are don't work for me quite as well. The clip is not very stiff and only causes the phones to bounce around much more than the MDR-J10. Also the peice that you put into your ear is bigger than the J10s and doesn't stay in or on my ear at all. Remember everybodies ear is different, so maybe they will work for you but beware.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!!!, March 12, 2005
I bought these headphones and in the beginning they were great except the cords were very tangle prone. Well after less than 3 months the black rubbery material that covers the wires just tore and exposed the wires. Then they started making a weird noise and I called Sony because they are still under warranty, but they don't want to honor the warranty and they want me to either pay $16 for refurbished ones or possibly $58 to fix them. Yeah right on both accounts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended, October 13, 2005
The sound from these headphones is decent but the cords tend to tangle. Also, after a few months the plastic that covers the wires started ripping and the wires became exposed. I highly recommend that you do not buy these.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sub-standard., July 5, 2008

I've been searching for a good pair of headphones to wear while running since the standard iPod headphones fall out of my ears. These are not worth buying if you're looking for headphones to wear while being active. I ended up taking mine back and bought theseSony Mdr-As20J Active Style Headphones with Soft Loop Hangers (Black) instead.

These are completely worthless for running. I had to adjust them about every 30 seconds because they'd shift on my ears and felt like they were falling out. About 10 minutes into my run when I started getting a little sweaty (and I don't think I sweat more than the average runner), the little inner ear bud started slipping out, which caused the whole thing to just slip off my ear. I put them back on, only to have them fall off again about 10 seconds later. I ended up just taking them off and continuing without music. Highly disappointing. Also, the cord is a little heavier than normal, which causes them to jiggle around. And, every time I picked them up, the cord was in a huge tangled mess. I really dislike these headphones.

As I mentioned, I took mine back almost immediately so I can't rate the quality, but it seems as if most people are unhappy about their durability. Overall, I wouldn't recommend these, especially for runners or other active people. For those looking for a simple pair of headphones for non-active uses, you can probably find something that costs less and is better than these. I was definitely disappointed and the Sony brand didn't live up to its name this time around.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sony MDR-J20 Vertical In-Ear Headphones no good, December 19, 2006
Its a shame i didn't see these reviews before buying these. The new flexible ear-hooks are too flexible and short, meaning the phones slip off the ear; the decision to join the phono lead to the left earpiece rather than traditionally via a 'U' arrangement (like a stethoscope)makes this worse on the left. And the earpieces are too weighty and large, compounding all the above. My old J10's were far better than these. Shame on you sony, for rusing these poorly designed headphones out.

5.0 out of 5 stars These are the best - sturdy, great sound, easy to untangle!, December 12, 2009

I like having hooks that rest over my ears (takes no effort to keep them on), and I can choose whether to push the earbuds deeper into my ear, or just let them rest outside so I can also hear sounds around me. I wear them primarily on public transportation or at work. Great audio depth of sound as well - enough bass, not too much treble. I have a black pair for travel (draws less attention) and a white pair at work. Don't waste your money on anything else!

4.0 out of 5 stars earphones, December 7, 2009

The earphones are great once they finally got here. It took over 2 weeks to receive them. They are comfortable and the cord doesn't get in the way when I workout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set of HeadPhones, November 27, 2009

I have owned these headphones for about 8 years and they have performed well throughout these years. I just recently broke them, it was completely my fault, I wasn't paying attention and snapped one of the over-the-ear hooks off. I have even purchased a pair of headphones to replace them but they weren't as good as these, so I still use the broken set of Sony mdr-J20's. I am about to order a new set so that I don't look silly on the train with one broken headphone. Also, the cord does get tangled A LOT (no frayed wires to speak of). I am pretty sure that I have used these at the gym in the past, but I didn't notice any movement. I am not an outside runner, at most I use the treadmill or the elliptical machines.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST earphones, bought 2 more after buying the worst, September 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I used these at the gym for over a year to drown out the garbage they play so loud. I also use these when mowing the lawn. The best fidelity and quality, I don't know how they could be any better. I bought Philips SHS8000 Premium Sound Earhook Headphones (since returned) for $29 (now $18 and less) and they were nothing in comparision to the $12 MDR-J20.
