Quality is questionable.
My first HP 1040 Fax lasted about 3 weeks before it stopped working. You had to continuously jiggle the cord in the back in order for it to turn on. HP replaced it had no charge. Now, about 3 months later, the same thing is happening with the 2nd. It just went out one day. I jiggle the cord in the back and it sometimes comes back on, but doesn't stay on. The thing...

The fax machine is sharing the same line as my regular phone with no problems, but you must physically locate your answering machine next to the fax so that you can plug it into your fax machine for this to work. Messages go to the answering machine, and faxes go to the fax machine just as they should.

This machine does everything that I hoped it would do and it does it flawlessly. Copies and transmissions are crystal clear, there are no paper jams, and set-up is simple with great directions. I thought about one of the cheaper machines but after reading reviews and doing research, I decided on this HP 1040 plain paper, ink jet. The film types seem to be a lot of trouble-this ink jet is a dream! Highly recommended. If you need a simple fax machine for occasional faxing and copying, this is the one to buy.

Now, about 3 months later, the same thing is happening with the 2nd. It just went out one day. I jiggle the cord in the back and it sometimes comes back on, but doesn't stay on. The thing is that the fax is hardly ever used. Maybe once/week and yet I've had 2 now that don't work. I haven't called yet to find out if they will replace the 2nd now that the 90 day warranty is over.

We bought the HP 1040 Fax two days ago to replace an older fax machine; and specifically to dispatch an urgent fax message.
Following the "Start Here" pamphlet and the "HP 1040/1050 Fax Series User Guide" scrupulously, we installed the new machine and fired off our urgent fax message... That's what we thought!
The message did not go through. To further test the machine, we checked it against several known fax numbers. Our messages did not go through.
Rechecking the setup instructions, individually and together, we tried resending... Failure again... and again, more failure.
We called in two other personnel to independently check our set up and fax dispatch. Failure.
What a dud!
The machine is now comfortably repacked for return... Well, back to the seller it goes!

I did not want one of those all-inclusive machines, just a fax. I use it in my small business, and it seems to work well. It is a little distracting that it receives the complete fax before it begins to print, but the printing is fast. I'm concerned about the life of the ink cartridge, but it uses proven HP technology: I have an HP Deskjet that I have been using for 15 years.

This machine caused over 2 hours of grief. Brand new machine (actually bought it at Office Max), set it up and was unable to get the blank paper to feed. I tried every which way, new paper, fanned it, turned it around, upside down.. nothing worked. Was able to print two sheets for whatever reason, but not at the same time and just wasn't able to repeat it. I called HP for help. Brand new machine and HP's automated message told me that the 1040 was "out of warranty". What a wasted day.

We bought this as a replacement for an old Panasonic "film" fax that had developed an intermittent short circuit. It is used for "light duty", more for sending than receiving.
Having read other comments for both this and the HP 1050 fax, we have it hooked into a single land line shared with an extension, no VOIP or digital phone, and without a surge protector.
The major decision in buying an inexpensive fax is whether to go "film" or ink cartridge.
Film can be wasteful and expensive. It indexes one page for each page received so that both a 3-line cover sheet and a page of solid text require a full sheet of film. On the other hand, film doesn't dry out in the device; while it takes up shelf space, it can be stored almost indefinitely; and there seem to be several quality "generic" film suppliers at half the cost of what Panasonic charges.
Ink cartridge drain in proportion to usage. While small, storage life is more limited and, in other devices, I've personally not had good experience with non HP "generic" or refilled cartridges.
The HP 1040 costs about $25. or so more than the bottom of the line Panasonic film unit. Note that it comes with a "starter" cartridge. Full cartridges sell for $30. at a local retailer.
So far, the fax is working as advertised. It took time to set up. There are lots of options and settings - the manual is some 87 pages. As with other electronic devices, I recommend downloading the manual from the HP web site and reading it before buying the product.
At least compared to my old Panasonic fax, the print is clearer and the operation is faster. It has good report functions and intuitive menus. But you do have to read the manual!
If any quality issues develop, I will post them here.
ADD: June, 2007. One major problem with this machine is faxing bank statements (slightly thicker than normal paper and previously folded for mailing -- although that may not be an issue.)
The statements do not feed smoothly and tend to hang up the machine. Accordingly, it is necessary to insert them sequentially and one page at a time during the faxing operation rather than stacking them in the feed slot.
Had we know this earlier, we would have given fewer than five stars but Amazon will not allow a rating change after posting.

POS.
2 hrs on line with tech support first day with screen contrast issue.
Day 2 machine started feeding blank paper to far and jamming documents.
Machine noisy.
Day 3, it's in the trash.
Day 4 received HP 1250, runs like a top, is quiet, and I'm back in business.

I have owned this machine 14 months. It now seems to have died. It no longer prints ... neither test page, nor copies, nor confirmation of fax transmission as it once did. HP offered me a $30.00 tech support option or free email support. I am waiting for free support. I did all the troubleshooting the manual suggested ... cleaned the cartridge, aligned it again, cleaned the innards as per instruction. It just stopped working properly. It was a fine fax machine, and I liked the ink cartridge rather than the film waste, but it didn't last very long for my $100.00. I won't buy an HP again because of this.

Bought this to replace my old Sharp with the expensive and wasteful film roll cartridge. This one has a similar footprint, but only the ink cartridge is better than the old machine. Nothing else works as well, particularly:
1. The loudspeaker is hardly audible even with the volume completely up
2. It is supposed to be able to tell the difference between an incoming fax and an incoming phone call (voice), but when I had it set to automatic, it was constantly thinking incoming calls were faxes and making those nasty fax sounds when people were trying to reach me (I could hear them when I picked up the phone to answer the call too--and they wouldn't stop even when I picked up the phone). My suspicion is that it was not engineered to be compatible with cordless digital phones. I had to switch it to phone only function, which means that I now have to be home and push the receive button for incoming faxes--what a pain.
3. It makes weird high-pitch noises when idle--they are not loud, but they are annoying--like it is talking to itself.
I would not recommend this model--it was disappointing.
