Great for carpet BUT blows hair, dust & dirt bunnies around on hard floors
I only write reviews for products that I wish I had been warned about before I purchased them. A Good Machine..., June 27, 2006
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I bought this vacuum strictly for the basement(where our Home Theatre is set up). It was a pain in the *ss carrying our canister up and down all the time, so I happened upon this cleaner on sale at Home Depot for a mere $70.00... I was initially skeptical at first, I mean a $70 vacuum? However, I purchased it anyway, knowing that I would be able to return it if I wasn't happy. The setup and assembly was fairly quick. The instructions were easy to follow and featured step-by-step illustrations. When I had everything ready to go, I decided to give it a "test run", and I was impressed. I was amazed at the junk our Sears Canister was leaving behind, as I watched the cat hair and dust swirling around in the collection bin. My only complaint-and this is common with bagless vacs in general-is that you MUST clean the filter off after every use, otherwise they tend to plug up and overheat the motor. This is especially true if you have multiple pets, or longhaired cats. In conclusion, this is a good machine. Strong suction too. The attachments include an extension wand for above floor cleaning, crevice tool, and dusting brush. The dustbin simply snaps off in a jiffy, and the filter is washable/replaceable. This is what I like to refer to as a "second vac", when you simply want a machine on another level in your home, without having to lug your main vacuum all over the place. I've owned it for about 5 months now, and so far, no complaints. Just keep it clean and you'll be set. Also, pay no attention to that one review below. This is obviously referring to a totally separate model. I'm happy.

The 1st review is WRONG!, December 29, 2005
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
The previous 1st review of this vacuum is absolutely wrong and is probably referring to a different model. 1st of all, this model DOES NOT have a Hepa filter. So there is no way the door holding the filter on could be coming loose, since it doesn't exist. 2nd of all, this vacuum is surprisingly very light. And is probably the lightest vaccuum of it's size. Lastly, as of this date, this model is brand new, and has only been on the market for a few weeks, so there is no way anyone could have had it for a few months. Also, to get service on a Eureka vacuum under the warranty, you only need to take it to a authorized repair shop. There are many of these in most major cities.
I have only had this vacuum a few weeks, but it works well. It seems to be constructed well, and will hopefully last longer then my previous Eureka, which only went for 1 year, but this one seems to be constructed better. I especially like the auto height adjustment feature, and the fact that this vaccum is light and easy to maneuver. In my opinion it is a good buy for the price.

Great for carpet BUT blows hair, dust & dirt bunnies around on hard floors, December 6, 2007
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I only write reviews for products that I wish I had been warned about before I purchased them. This vacuum has a lot of great points, including being lightweight, extremely easy to maneuver, having a powerful suction, and being only 13" wide so as to fit between my 18 dining and chairs and barstools without having to move them. The first time I used the vacuum it was on carpet and I was very pleased. However, today I tried to vacuum my kitchen, breakfast area, and foyer (ceramic tile) and noticed that dust bunnies and stray hairs were actually flying all over in the air! I took a good look at my new vacuum and discovered that the exhaust jetstream turbo vents were located - of all places - in the front of the vacuum - the exhaust vents powerfully in the same direction as you are vacuuming! I do need more exercise; just didn't think that I would get it having to constantly chase down dust bunnies as they sail around in the air. LOL I guess I'm going to move this vacuum to my small completely carpeted 1000 ft. bonus area upstairs and go ahead and invest in a Dyson, which also has a 13" cleaning path width.

Great little machine, February 9, 2006
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I love this machine. Just turn it on and go. It automatically adjust to each floor including wood and ceramic. I have noticed an improvement in my hallway carpet. Either this is a good machine or my Kurby is a piece of crap. (just had it reconditioned)
The only thing I don't like is the cord length. But my house is 100 feet long so I am probably the exception.

A Powerful Sucker., May 6, 2007
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
When I bought the Eureka 4700A Maxima Bagless Upright Vacuum (Is it me or are product names getting longer?), I was looking for a dust buster, but I found the price and features too good to resist.
I was expecting one of those low-powered vacuums that would get all clogged up and would have to be replaced after a very short period of time.
I was delighted to find that this vacuum has an enormous amount of suction power and feels self-propelled. It does a very thorough job at picking up all of the dirt on my hardwood floors and on my rugs.
The 4700A is loud, but not loud enough for me to be dissatisfied.

ELEGANT ENGINEERING MAKES THIS ONE THE BEST, December 12, 2006
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
This review is intended for the 4700 series as pictured here with the see-through dustcontainer! It is a joy to use and simplicity in every way. And the engineers used sheer genius in its plain and simple design. My hard use might tend to make the automatic shut-off come into play, when years of cat hair or whatever clogged the filter on first use, but I do not expect that to happen again, as I have no cat. It was a previous owner and years of no vacuuming which caused it. If you do have the motor turn off, wait the half hour as recommended, hey take a break and read a good book from the amazon, and then start her up again. But be sure before you rest the on/off pedal is in the off position or the motor might not realize it is recovering and not start up again. Also unplug and then be certain to PLUG IT BACK IN!
Notice the no-clog hose.
I finally had to give up on my beloved Eureka HEPA filtered after yeaers of very hard usage finally made that right angle turn where the hose hits the floor and forward to the brushes constantly blocked. I got tired of dismantling the tiny hard to reach screws and prying out the collected dirt and dust and hair and such. I must confess: I used and abused my former Eureka, including in the potting soil corner, and have paid the price.
Now I discover very inexpensively and with elegant simplicity this wonderfully engineered marvel.
Notice again the no-clog hose. Rather than the hidden right angle turn at the bottom, the hose comes straight out, and is easily detached at the bottom for clearing, which is unnecessary in any case. Rather than a multitude of filters to be replaced at great cost every few months, there is one, which rinses off with water. And instead of a whole bunch of attachments falling off the main stand, there are the basics, no more, no less, including generously long wands to attach to the generously long hose.
And the most powerful engine available, at full bore, blasting up the floor, under this light weight yet poweful tool.
Check out the interesting engineering of floor clearance. Rather than estimating carpet shag, or whether you will pass mainly over bare floor and low carpet, and thus struggling to turn a hard to reach clearance dial with stiff fingers, you just hit the engagement foot pedal and the clearance automatically adjusts to the present floor conditions, and continues to do so on the fly as you pass from condition to condition, from rug to linoleum. And when the machine is ready to rest, however unwillingly like a young colt ready to run some more but being put away early to stable, restoring it to the upright condition raises it to a clearance high enough to roll into storage.
The handle can be easily and effectively lowered for reaching under tables and even beds, and the powerful headlight really makes visuals ineluctably bright.
The engineers at Eureka have really designed an effective and useful tool in this one, with elegant simplicity of use and of maintenance. Assembly was also a breeze and a joy with one screwdriver.
This is the one to get. Never mind those cheapo shop vacs with lousy plastic attachments; never mind those much more expensive rigs seductively and bizarrely promising continuous suction. This is the one. Take my advice, freely given. You may even thank me for it. Or let me come over and dump dirt on your carpet and show you how great a machine this is. A joy to use. I can't wait for the carpet to fill up with dust again!
Makes vacuuming a contemplative prayer of spiritual cleansing.
Further strong points for this vac, for those who do not yet believe in it, please notice the handy handle near the base which makes vacuuming up stairs easier, especially considering the sturdy yet lightweight of this vacuum. Also notice the ease of removing and emptying the dirtbag (I know it is more of a canister but dirtbag is a great word) and of rinsing out the filter. I did have a few moments puzzle putting the dirtbag back on but that will soon become second nature. I also must admit to not having used the staircleaning feature as I have no stairs here in the desert.

Well, it blows the dirt away..that I can confim., November 18, 2007
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I checked on many reviews before purchasing this unit. I live in a city apt. and as I don't have carpets, it's ability to clean floors was key..especially dust and cat hair. So, I set it up(easy) and fire it up right in front of a heap that I swept together for it's maiden job..And to my amazement a jet of air blew the heap all over the place. After taking a closer look at this machines operation, I can attest that a relatively powerful stream of air is blown out roughly 5" above where the "supposed" vacuuming is being done..are you kidding me? Now, I have to gather up the dirt again...Not me, I took it right back...

Very good for my needs, May 19, 2008
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I purchased thru Amazon in January. Wanted to get some use before reviewing. Some of the same smaller problems that other reviewers have noted, I had some of the same. However, for the price, it has been overall really a good vacuum. It did take awhile in putting it together, but once done, it was a easy chore to do the cleaning. Rolls right along, in fact I thought for a bit that it was 'self propelling', but it just moves very easy. Has great suction power. Someone noted they did not like the 'blower-effect' it had, ie: pushing dirt ahead out of the way. My experience is that it actually 'blows' it from corner areas and sucks it right up. The self height adjustment works well. I have carpet and tile mix, and you do not even notice the change. I had a older 'Dirt Devil' that finally died. I did not care for the changing of bags, nor changing a broken belt after about each 4 uses. The Eureka is super lightweight and easy to store. Now, a number of reviewers also mentioned the 'dirt basket and filter'. They are correct in the fact the filter needs to be cleaned often. Do not be misled in thinking you are going to wait until the basket is full. On about the 4th time of use, (basket about half full) it shut down on me. Checked manual, states it has a 'auto shutdown system', (which protects the motor) when the filter or basket is full. Since then I make it a point to clean the filter after each couple of uses. The basket and filter cleaning is a real simple task. I did not find it messy, altho would suggest to do it outside or in a utility room area. I have no pets or bad dirt pileup, but I do live in a desert climate with blowing wind and dust. This vacuum 'sucks' it all up very nicely. So, for the cost of this unit, if I can get a couple years use, I think it is well worth it.

Great vacuum with one flaw, July 24, 2007
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
This is a really powerful vacuum and I love it. But one flaw. The lower end of the hose come off from the hole VERY easily. Sometimes I am almost done vacuuming and realize that the hose is off and vacuum the whole room again.... TIP:Make sure the hose is securely inserted before and during vacuuming.
August 24, 2007
My vacuum stopped working! I bought the vacuum in June. Since a few weeks ago, the vacuum started showing the major defect, which is OVERHEATING! I can only use it for at most 20 minutes. After that, the vacuum is overheated and shut off itself. I called Eureka's custmer service and they claimed that it was clogging in my vacuum and not the product itself is not defective. Well, I bough the new filter and and belt to see if that would change the overheating problem but NO. I do not recommend this vacuum. Please also see other reviewers' comments with the same problem.

Broke in 2 years, August 15, 2007
This review is from: Eureka 4700D LightSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
This is a great vacuum cleaner when it works. The first time I used it I was amazed at how much dust it collected. Unfortunately, like most modern vacuums, it is made entirely of plastic. I repaired it under the warranty three times. The fourth time that it broke I tossed it. It was no longer worth my trip to the repair shop every 4-6 months to get it fixed.
