Worked well for our vacation
We recently purchased the Thule Quest rooftop bag for use during our family vacation, which involved 1400 miles of driving. Our bag is 10 cu. ft. in size, which held three suitcases whose sizes where at the large end of airline carry-on luggage, along with several smaller bags (shoes, etc) and some odds and ends to fill the space. YIKES!
Wow I thought THULE was THE company for this type of stuff. Boy was I mad after a trip from NJ to SC. The bag was mounted to my roofrack and was a little noisy (top be expected). But when I got to SC and opened the bag....the horror! The inside lining shredded and flaked off on everything! There were also 2 holes along the to seam! What a mess...and I couldn't use...

Sept. 12, 2005 THULE sent me a replacement, an Escape 2. Great customer service....but does this mean the Escape is better? Is the Quest inferior? There was no coorespondence with the repalcement...I'll try it out this summer.

Worked well for our vacation, September 1, 2007
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
We recently purchased the Thule Quest rooftop bag for use during our family vacation, which involved 1400 miles of driving. Our bag is 10 cu. ft. in size, which held three suitcases whose sizes where at the large end of airline carry-on luggage, along with several smaller bags (shoes, etc) and some odds and ends to fill the space. The bag has a sloping front end and did not add any detectable drag while driving. In fact I did not notice any real difference in driving whether the bag was attached or not. The cargo bag worked very well for us and the pros and cons are listed below:
Pros: It is lightweight, so it is very easy to attach to the roof. In fact, it was attached and loaded by one person. We have two cross supports on the top of our small SUV and the four straps provided allowed for the both the front and the back of the bag to be attached twice. While I checked the bag each time we stopped, the straps never loosened and the bag did not shift during the trip. I found it best to put the extra length of strap under the bag, if they are hanging loose they make a lot of noise. When we reached our destination and unloaded the cargo bag, I simply undid the straps and took off the bag. Those families vacationing with us that had the hard-top carriers had to leave them on for the entire week!! When not in use the bag simply folds up and is stored in the carry case provided.
Cons: As others have noted, these bags are best described as water resistant, not water proof. During the first part of our trip it was raining and when we finished the trip there was water inside the cargo bag. Knowing that this was possibility, I packed the suitcases in plastic lawn/leaf bags and with the small amount of water present the bags did not get wet. I would restrict the items put into the cargo bag to those that will not be damaged by water.
Overall the cargo bag worked well for us and I would recommend it, taking into account the limitations discussed above.

quality product, July 10, 2006
We used this for the first time this summer. The bag held up well during 600+ miles of interstate driving. It did let some water through during the rain, but not real bad. Be sure to pack your items in plastic bags if they're predicting rain or go for the more expensive waterproof Thule bags.
This is much more convenient than the big plastic cargo boxes since it folds up so small, goes in it's own carry bag, and fits on the closet shelf. It also goes on the vehicle quickly with four straps. Very easy to use.

Good bag, but Could be More Weather Resistant, August 2, 2009
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
The Quest is a nice looking bag. Out of the box, it feels sturdy and durable. The bag's interior has a thin, rubbery coating to help keep out the weather. While the Quest more than met most of the challenges a long trip threw at it, it failed to be very weather resistant.
Installing the bag on my Mazda 5 with a Thule rack system was ridiculously easy. There are four straps. Two attach to the front bar, two to the rear. Simply pull them tight and the bag is secure. (As an aside, the manual provides instructions for attaching the bag to side bars.) Even heavily loaded, I never felt the bag was in danger of breaking free. On a recent, 3,300 mile trip, I never had to tighten or adjust the straps.
I knew the bag was only weather resistant (not weather proof) when I bought it. The suitcases and everything else, therefore, went into plastic contractor trash bags before going on the roof. Still, I was surprised by how wet the interior of the bag became, even after driving through a light rain. Traveling 65 mph through rain really revealed the Quest's weakness. For Thule, weather resistance appears not too mean much in the way of moisture resistance. On top of that, the corners of my two small suitcases wore against inside of the bag, rubbing away the rubbery weatherproof coating in several places. That added to the amount of water getting into the bag. After driving 1,200 miles, water was puddling in the bag. Not good.
All in all, I am satisfied with the safety, security, looks, and cargo carrying capability of the bag. I am not happy with the wearing away of the interior coating (I hope it does not wear through to the outside.) Nor am I happy with the lack of weather resistance, with respect to moisture. The quest is not a waterproof bag; I was not expecting a waterproof bag. However, a light rain should not have resulted in such an invasion of water.

Lacking one important feature, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
I purchased this bag recently as an alternative to my Thule hardshell cargo box for short weekend trips to the lake.
After driving home on the first weekend of use in rain I was surprised to find at least 2 cups of water in the interior of the bag and my items completely soaked. Before the next trip I sprayed the entire bag with heavy canvas waterproofing spray. This had no effect other than to discolor the outside of the bag slightly. My contents are still soaked if I encounter rain. And I have followed the mounting instructions correctly by the way!
Part of the problem with this bag is the seams are poorly sewed. If I look into the bag when it's on my rooftop I can see the light coming in from the front corner seams. Obviously water is getting in at these seams. My next attempt will be to tape up the seams and see if that helps.
Overall I can't recommend this bag based on the significant amount of water that accumulates inside. The manufacturers rating of water resistant is completely misleading. I did not assume that this bag would be completely dry inside when driving in rain but comeon, how useful is a bag that fills with a significant amount of water.

HOrrible!, October 18, 2008
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
We strapped it according to directions on the top of our car. It rained some and was windy one day, but not downpours. Even though we had everything inside in super strong zip locks--everything (EVERYTHING) got soaked.I know it said it was water resistent (I think that was the word they used) but come on--this was bad!
So I returned the item and Amazon makes it so easy to return.
Elaine

Recommended, January 8, 2009
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
We are a family of five and travel from mid-Ohio to mid-Kansas semi-annually in a Ford Windstar. Due to the kids getting older and bigger we needed more room in the van. After looking at several different toppers I decided to try this one. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone needing extra space in their vehicle. This past holiday season we made our trip to Kansas with this carrier attached to the top, which by the way is very easy to do. We traveled through freezing temperatures, rain, and wind. Upon arrival there was a little water inside the carrier but because the instructions highly recommended putting items in plastic bags, which we did, nothing got wet. The carrier remained secure through the headwinds, crosswinds, and even the sudden gusts of wind produced by passing trucks.
If I ever have to buy another carrier, it will be this one.

Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Carrier - Great to Have, September 17, 2007
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
Purchased this as a last minute item when we realized we did not have enough room in the van for all our stuff and kids for a road trip. We were very pleased with the Thule 846 Rooftop Cargo bag. It is soft, so its easy to get "Stuff" in there. We were pleasanlty surprised by the amount of items it actually held.
Drove through wind and rain.. remarkbly, nothing inside was wet.
Easy to hook up. Everything is built in, attaches directly to roof with straps. We found it easier to fill the bag on the ground then lift it to the roof; This option requires strong, tall men though!

Versatile and Secure, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
We used this cargo bag to travel about 1600 miles in a Honda Civic. Packing it was easy and efficient. The Quest stayed put on the roof securely using aftermarket strap-on bar racks. It did slide a little in 40+mph cross winds but stayed firmly on the roof.
We took it off the roof of the car twice for overnight hotel stays and, although it was heavily loaded, it was actually quite easy to move.
I think the Quest cost us 5-8mpg gas mileage in the Civic.
There was no visible wear or damage to the Quest after our trip.
Overall, I am very impressed with this product and am happy to have purchased it. We did not test the water-resistance of this product, but had everything packed in plastic bags.

Great product!, November 21, 2009
This review is from: Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag (Sports)
This is a great product and is desribed accurately in product description. It is easy to pack and install and is great for big stuff that can just go on top of the car. We use it for camping and pack all the sleeping bags and pillows and big/soft bulky stuff. The only draw back is that it is not waterproof..which it clearly states in the description. We just used it on a rainy day and packed everything in those big XXXL Ziploc bags and it worked fine! So it's a big thumbs up, but plan your weather well or pack the stuff in large bags on the inside. We love it! Very simple and GREAT for the price!
