4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, but not without flaws
This humidifier performs as advertised; it's very quiet and is adequate for several rooms to a moderately sized house. The dual water tanks are easy to carry and fill, and the design looks better (at least to me) than a big, square box with fake wood grain. The base and tanks are very easy to clean compared to other units.

3.0 out of 5 stars A few kinks
I bought this unit in mid-november for my 2 bedroom apartment. Overall it does a good job of maintaining a comfortable level of humidity typically around 45-50%. However the unit is constantly ON. It never cycles and this is with the humidistat set at just off of it's lowest setting and the fan speed on the mid setting which will give you tolerable noise level. What has...

What has caused me concern is how quickly the filter has gotten mouldy and that the air out of the unit smells like musty. I have changed the the Protec cartridge as recommended every 30 days and cleaned the filter several times per the instructions in the manual. I phoned the manufacturer (Kaz not Honeywell) and they say the filter will only last 1 to 3 months and that it needs to be cleaned every week. I pointed out that no where in the manual does it state that frequent a cleaning period nor such a short filter life and that in-fact it states that the filter should last one season. She said sorry and that there is nothing they can or will do other that tell you where you can get a new filter for $11.

The dual water tanks are easy to carry and fill, and the design looks better (at least to me) than a big, square box with fake wood grain. The base and tanks are very easy to clean compared to other units.

There are a couple of flaws. The water tanks look good, but would be easier to fill if they could stand for filling. The curved shape of the top means that they need to be propped up in some way. The screw tops that seal the tanks need to be tightened securely. Someone with weak hands may need help or a tool or risk leakage.

All in all, this is a good humidifier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great humidifier, December 28, 2006

The only problem is a tendancy of the filter to become moldy, but this is easily remedied by adding 1/16 Cup or so of ammonia to each of 2 reservoirs that you fill with water. This will ward off the mold. Buy extra filters. This machine is very quiet relative to the amount of humidity that it puts out (hence the filter enclosure is correspondingly more humid, and tends toward mold more easily).

Classic example of function following form. The designers were compelled to make this humidifier rotund and swoopy, but in the process made the water chambers impossible to set flat in a sink for filling. There is no way to balance one of these, aside from holding it upright with one hand while running your faucet with the other. Then it's a delicate balancing act to turn off the faucet while holding multi-gallons of water. Unless you have three hands, it takes practice to do it without spilling, and this design defect could have been avoided. Do yourself a favor and buy extra filters and a humidifier water treatment solution at the same time as you buy this humidifier. Don't be deceived by the Honeywell brand name. It's made by Kaz, like many other brands of humidifiers. BTW: it IS noisier than some humidifiers, but not excessively so given the area this machine can humidify.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solved Filter Problem, December 22, 2009
This review is from: Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology (Kitchen)
I purchased this unit three years ago. I love the output yet hated how quickly the filter mildewed. I tried various methods to reduce mildew smell/mold. I added bleach to the water. I hung the filter out to dry. I prayed to the humidifier (didn't work).

Solution: This year I bypassed the float/interlock that shuts the unit off when the tanks empty. Now the fan runs continuously thereby drying the filter BEFORE mold and mildew begin to grow. When I first bought the unit the filter would turn yellow and smell within a week. NOW it lasts for over a month (two months with cleaning).

How: I taped a small rectangular piece of rigid plastic (cut from a hotel key-card) to the top of the float mechanism which keeps the micro-switch closed regardless of the water level. Thus, when both tanks are empty the fan keeps running and the entire unit (to include the FILTER) dries out vs sitting stagnant in a pool of water for mold, mildew, and bacteria to thrive. There is an old biology saying referring to bacteria: "If it dries it dies".

I leave my fan setting on LOW and the humidifier setting on MAX all day every day (24/7) during the winter months. I allow the unit to completely dry out three times per week (simply remove the tanks if they are not empty and let the fan run on low). My house humidity remains around 34% and would be totally dry (5%) if not for this unit.

Con: I can't place it in my bedroom due to the "bloop-bloop-bloop" sound caused by air bubbles when a tank is releasing water into the reservoir.

2.0 out of 5 stars filter constantly needs to be changed!!!!! Expensive upkeep, February 2, 2007
This review is from: Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology (Kitchen)
I have replaced the filter on this multiple times this winter---mold growth is a problem!!!! Filters definitely do not last a season. Good humidifier if willing to deal with this problem and spend the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bit noisy, February 6, 2007

The unit is a bit noisy on high, but I sleep fine with it on low and a couple of feet from my bed. Seems to do a very good job of getting moisture into the air even with the fan on low. The casters allow for easy movement, and the twin tanks are small enough to handle easily even when full.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Defects for Me, April 18, 2007
This review is from: Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology (Kitchen)
I returned the Honeywell 6011i humidifier because the product had 2 defects and the product was very poorly designed.

The 6011i humidifier had 2 defects right out of the box. The first was that the 6011i humidifier would not run on the High speed setting but did run on the low and medium speed settings. The second defect was that the cap for one water container had no rubber o-ring seal and the water bottle leaked when upright in its normal operating position. The fact that this 6011i humidifier had 2 defects says that the quality control for this product must be very low and implies this product suffers from an above average failure rate.

The 6011i humidifier has major design defects that make it difficult to operate and maintain the 6011i humidifier. The design defects are so
major that the person(s) that designed and approved the design of the
6011i humidifier should be shot or at least fired! The first major design defect is that the water bottles will not stand up by themselves in my sink. Because of this I must hold the water containers vertically with my hand and still cannot completely fill the water container to the top.

The screw-on caps for the water containers are so large they are difficult for my wife with small hands to screw on while holding the water container vertically upright.

The next design defect is that one cannot at a glance check the water level in the water containers but must pick up the water containers and turn them over to check the water level in the container. One can see if the water container is empty or nearly empty at a glance, but this is of no use if one wants to quickly see if there is enough water in the water containers to last until one returns home from work or will last through the night.

The last design defect of the 6011i humidifier is that the water containers and humidifier fan housing do not just "drop into place" on the base. One must use one hand as a guide for the water container and then still fiddle with the position/angle of the water container to get it to seat properly. This is even more difficult if both water containers are removed for filling at the same time.

I bought this 6011i humidifier to replace a Honeywell humidifier that finally failed after many years of faithful service. I also selected the 6011i Humidifier because of its many desirable features. However the positive product features were significantly outweighed by the poor quality control and the poor design of the 6011i Humidifier. I believe that a humidifier should be designed for usability first and esthetics second, not the other way around as is the case with the 6011i humidifier. Thus I returned the 6011i humidifier.

The machine works very well. You can set the desired humidity level and the machine will turn on/off to maintain that level. It works very nicely with today's forced air systems and thermostats that measure the humidity level. The correct humidity in the air makes for a very comfortable heat in your house.
