This pen is quite useful, and it has been quite reliable. I work in a job that requires me to carry a red pen and a blue or black pen, so this fits the bill well. The only problem is the small amount of ink in the refills and the difficulty in obtaining more refills. The erasers have been easy to find at the local office store, and it takes standard .5mm leads, such as Pentel hi-polymers, so those are also easy to buy. If not for the difficulty in finding replacements for the tiny, quickly depleted refills, this pen would be right up there with my Pilot Knights as one of my favorite pens. In answer to the refill problem, I found out today to my surprise that Staedtler multi-action ball point refills work perfectly well of Cross refills are not available. Another good thing about this pen is it is immune to the quality drop in Cross pens since they began mass manufacturing them in China rather than producing them in the classic handmade style in the USA. This pen is Japanese made, and it has the quality of a Pilot.

Update November 2008: I still have my two pens, and still love them. It is now out in PINK and a matte silver, for the holidays I guess? I saw them in Fahrney's catalog. There may be other exclusive colors at other outlets.

I have two Cross Tech 3 pens... a blue one and a chrome one. I love the availability of a fine-point pencil or a pen. I've replaced the black pen point with a blue one, and unfortunately Cross does not yet make a blue/black refill, so I've had to install another brand of refill, and it's not quite as fine, which is too bad. I don't use the red very much but it is handy to have. The pen writes with a wonderfully smooth, very fine line, and the colored pen (I have blue but this would be true of black as well) is not so slippery in hand as the chrome.
These pens take a fair bit of abuse; I have dropped mine and it has come apart sometimes and I have just put it back together. They don't like to get wet, though, so try not to leave them in your pocket through the wash, or fall in a lake, or get soaked in the rain. They can get a little water on the outside but don't immerse them. Also I have found that the twist-off eraser cover tends to come loose. In fact I lost one (my own fault for having it in my back pocket that week) but you can buy replacement tops directly from Cross. If you just check the top now and then, like when you use it, you should be OK.
I also like fountain pens, very much, and my favorite is the Namiki Falcon, with its flexible nib and very fine line, but you can't make a carbon with a fountain pen, and they don't like sitting idle for days. The Cross Tech3 is a good workhorse, and it's easy to get refills, and I highly recommend it. If you want other colors than what Cross offers, you can get compatible refills from places like Pendemonium and Art Brown. Thanks for reading, and if this was helpful, please check the box.

I am a Flight Engineer in the Air Force, and I need to use the black and red ink, and the pencil features on EVERY flight. I often work in the dark, on Night Vision Goggles, and on a VERY busy tactical flight deck on Special Ops missions.

How's that for a demanding application with which to test this product?

I've taken this pen overseas and to most States in the union. It has never jammed. It has never failed to work. I know it's just a pen/pencil...but to me, it is a critical thing that I need to work EVERY time I ask it to.

Bottom line: This tool (and I DO consider it a TOOL) is one of the most valuable ones in my inventory. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY reccomend this writing tool. Once you use it, you'll wonder how you got by using anything else. Worth EVERY penny of the approx. $35 I paid (and I'm a cheap SOB, by nature).

Scout's Honor. ;-)

Nurses are always in need of tri-color pens. We thrive on the free ones but once in a while you have to bite for the finer things in life. This is a great pen, writes nice, and fits the bill. Getting the refills for the red pen and eraser are a pain but love the pen. I keep the free pens for those who ask, can I borrow your pen?

I own one of these pens in the "Lustrous Chrome" finish, and, after picking one up in this beautiful enameled blue finish, the blue pen is the one I use daily. It's got a better weight to it, the finish allows for a more secure grip, and I get constant compliments on this pen.

After my heavy use of this pen, I still have yet to have any issues with its functionality. I've dropped it many times, and, unlike some other, cheaply made multi pens out there, have never had any issues with getting it to work.

Switching tips is, literally, as easy as twisting the shaft. You have to be sure, though, to push the lead back into the pencil mechanism, as too much lead left sticking up will get in the way of switching tips.

Hands down, out of all of the pens that I've purchased over the years (I started out with fountain pens, and have quite a few really nice ones, before I moved on to the more practical multi pen), this one is my all-time favorite. It's a very stylish, professional pen that combines all that you could really hope for, in one. Instead of having to lug around a separate pencil, all that you need is here, along with two different ink color options, which I feel cover all of the bases for your standard user. The satin blue finish is luxurious and professional looking, without looking like every other pen out there. And Cross is great with their customer service. I lost an end cap for each of my multi pens, and I called to ask them how to go about ordering replacements, and they simply sent me extras (yes, plural!) free of charge!

This is a great pen to have in your collection. I'm confident that, once you pick one up, you'll find yourself satisfied enough with this pen to stop searching for a better one. I really do believe that this is the best multi pen out there.

Very convenient and solid feel. Major detraction is that the lead is not continuously retained securely. Pressing on the lead holder without the lead extended usually restores proper operation, but often must be repeated. Cross wants $10 plus insured shipping to them in order to examine and repair. They would not consider simply sending a replacement pencil element. Too bad because this is a good writing instrument.

Cross won't send out a pencil mechanism to replace the faulty one on my Tech 3, but insist that I send the pencil to them for repair or replacement. Further, customer service informed me that I should send the pen by UPS or FedEx because "...we service those first because the people paid to get it to us."

So take Cross's "lifetime guarantee" with a grain of salt. Yes, they'll service your pen or pencil and return it to you with a turnaround time of "four to six weeks," and you will need to pay UPS or FedEx to speed up that service (no guarantees) and you will be without your pen or pencil for a month or more.

In fact it seems like Cross wants to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to assuring the purchaser of their lifetime guarantee. They seem to be saying, "You can buy with confidence because our writing instruments are guaranteed for life," while at the same time making the option of actually getting a repair as unattractive as legally possible, just short of saying, "We were just kidding about that guarantee." Legally within acceptable parameters, but ethically right (write) on the edge.

Nice pens and pencils. Poor customer support. I suppose it's a Cross we'll just have to bear if we want to use their writing tools.

Overall I'm very pleased with the Satin Blue Tech 3. The pen was a little "tight" when switching between black/red/pencil for the first couple of days, but quicky loosened up for more effortless twists. All writing points are very solid when extended, unlike some multi functions which have a good bit of wobble when in use. Overall, the pen feels as if it's constructed very well with quality parts. The satin coating seems very tough, and has some texture to negate slippage when writing. The pocket clip seems very well constructed and durable as well.

I love this pen. I've now bought several, giving most away as gifts. I used one for a couple of years before I lost it, and now have a replacement. It is thin enough to fit easily in my shirt pocket along with my phone, but it is not so thin as to be hard to hold. Having red, black, and pencil available all the time is very nice. When I receive handouts in a meeting, I always switch to red, so any notes I make are clearly visible on the page. I use the medium blue refills instead of the black, because I like writing in blue. Even though they are small, I find the refills last quite a long time.

Great product. As an engineering manager, my daily routine consists of marking-up document changes in red, signing approvals in black, and taking meeting notes in pencil. With this pen, I can accomplish all of those goals without carrying around a pocket full of writing instruments. I love the simplicity of operation and the build quality is excellent. I prefer roller ball pens over ballpoint, but as far as ballpoints go, these things write pretty well. Very high quality...
