5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly nice for the price.
My old faithful *insert high end company name here* first stethoscope from nursing school died on me after three years. I ordered this model with modest expectations, and I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the product. 3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Clear 'Beater' Stethescope, Uncomfortable to Wear
I am a first year nursing student and although I bought a Littman Classic II SE, I was concerned about it growing legs and walking off while in clinical or lab. Based on the famous "For Us Docs" stethescope review from 2008 that you can find online, I picked up this steth for ~$24.00 here on Amazon to use instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Clear 'Beater' Stethescope, Uncomfortable to Wear, September 25, 2009

Pros:

- This stethescope IS surprisingly clear for apical auscultations and taking blood pressures. My Littman may be a bit louder, but I think that it sounds muddy or boomy. This Omron Sprague is clear.
- The steth does NOT have the tunable diaphragm like the Littmann, which I think is a plus. A normal dual-head steth, I find, is easier to use: you
don't have to worry about changing pressure while listening to a patient to hear the high or low noises.
- The blue color that I chose is actually a darker, less toy-like looking color, which is nice. I wouldn't be embarrassed wearing this in a hospital.
- Very flexible in terms of accessories: Adult and Peds diaphragam and bell attachments switch out quickly. There is even an infant bell, and three types of eartips. The accessories all come in a little plastic folding holder, which is cheap but useful.
- Actually feels like its built fairly well.

Cons:
- The double lumen tubing is stiff and doesn't bend easily enough to accomadate various positions during an exam.
- The double lumen has what appears to bea permenant kink due to being folded into the box for sometime.
- The accessories are cheap - the various bells are just cheap plastic (but what do you want for the low price?)
- Here's the BIG one for me: its extremely uncomfortable to wear! The mushroom eartips are worthless, the hardplastic tips did not block out ambient noise well enough, and the clear rubber tips stuck too far into my ear canals. It was literally quite painful!
- The scope will get heavy over the course of a 12 hour shift.

All-in-all, this scope is usable as a last resort. And its cheap enough that if it gets 'borrowed' the owner wouldn't be too angry. Useful for basic auscultations for students, but its too uncomfortable (for me) to be used for any length of time. I will send this back and get a refund, and go with a GRx or ADG, etc. Or get the Littmann engraved with my name.
I would seriously consider getting one that is a bit more expensive for the comfort issue alone.

***Update 3-8-10***
I decided to hang onto this scope and mess with it. I straightened out the tubing by letting it soak in extremely hot water for 20 minutes (not immersing the head), then letting it hang so that the weight of the head would align the tubing. I also put on some soft ear tips from a Prestige Medical Sprague I had laying around and voila! It went from a kinked, uncomfortable scope to one that is actually pretty nice to use. Is it the best scope out there? No, however for the price and clear acoustics, it's not too bad (especially for students!) Just be prepared to give it a little TLC to get it into tip-top shape! I even used a little Armor All I had in the garage to coat the tubing and protect it a bit. Hope this helps!

I ordered this model with modest expectations, and I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the product. Having relatively "rookie" ears, I'm very pleased at the quality of the acoustics of this little fella. Lung sounds have never been clearer, and I can pick up a murmur from six feet away. Well, the last part is a bit exaggerated, but you get the idea.

I give this little guy two thumbs up.

I bought this stethoscope a couple of months back, its the best purchase. It has really good acoustics, very accurate when taking blood pressure. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get something good and cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product, May 14, 2007
By svchw (VA, USA) - See all my reviews
We are using this stethoscope at home to monitor the growth of the little human being in my wife's belly. Combined with the Omron Sphygmomanometer it can also measure the blood pressure and heart rate of adult people. This combination is really great and way more accurate than the electronic blood pressure measurement equipements that are usually much more expensive. I highly recomment this product and the Omron Sphygmomanometer. Learning how to use them is fairly easy if you have normal hearing ability.

While not a top of the line stethoscope this is a good quality instrument for the price of $11.00. It is a bit bulky but also sturdy. Working well for me after a year's use. It comes with a kit of spare parts, most usefully the diaphragms which are subject to cracking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stethoscope for general use, April 8, 2009

This is a chinese made copy of a low tech. medical instrument. As a copy it is 20% of what I paid 30years ago for a similar stethoscope. I am not a cardiologist but,to me, as an otolaryngologist it appears to satisfactorily transmit and amplify pulmonary, cardiac, and bowel sounds for general evaluation of these organs. The tubing has taken on a mild twist from prolonged storage, the instrument doesn't hang straight from the user's neck but this is cosmetic and perhaps not all would display this mild problem. The tubing is soft and the workmanship is the equal of a similar stethoscope I purchased in the 1970's.

Wanted a spare stethoscope that worked well and wasn't expensive. This one works better than the expensive one I originally bought as a med student! Great quality, affordable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars a bit bulky and heavy, June 27, 2007

This stethoscope has very good sound quality, and an assortment of bells to listen to different things.

However, the tubing feels somewhat bulky and inflexible, and can get in the way sometimes. The stethoscope is a good deal heavier than others. It doesn't come with a bag!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product, great sound!, October 10, 2007

I'm currently nursing student and I bought this product to take my blood pressure/heart sounds exam. I was kind of reluctant to purchase this one because I thought the price was really cheap, therefore it couldn't be that good a stethoscope. I was really wrong. I can hear perfectly through this stethoscope, even more so than the one's we have in our nursing lab. I would suggest this to anyone interested in a stethoscope at a low price.
