What is everyone talking about???
My husband cracked open the box tonight and it took him a mere 1-3/4 hours to assemble, all by himself. He found the instructions to be extremely well-written and logical to follow and the color coding/numbering on the pieces made it one of the easiest flat-pack items (kids, grownups or otherwise) he's ever seen. Mostly happy overall but somewhate disappointed
We purchased this kitchen based on the other reviews that we read on-line. We felt the cost was reasonable for a wooden kitchen. Although we are happy with the overall appearance, it did come with some damaged corners and the door of the microwave has what appears to be dried glue on the inside of the see-through door. He also feels that this is a very well engineered toy. Don't let other reviewers scare you.

We purchased this kitchen based on the other reviews that we read on-line. We felt the cost was reasonable for a wooden kitchen. Although we are happy with the overall appearance, it did come with some damaged corners and the door of the microwave has what appears to be dried glue on the inside of the see-through door. Although the instructions were very good and very thorough, we had a lot of difficulty putting it together. It took much longer than it should have because at least 4 of the pre-drilled holes were not pre-drilled so we had to drill them ourselves (which cracked the wood in some cases) and find other screws that would work. We also had problems with the metal pieces that are inserted inside the holes to hold the screws in place once they are screwed in. Several of these came out making it impossible to keep the screws in place.

Missing Parts!, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
We purchased this kitchen with some reservations after reading all the reviews. We've had such good experiences with other Melissa & Doug toys that we thought we'd give it a shot. Well one of the major components was stightly damaged and had a manufacturing flaw that was painted over. That wasn't too big of a deal...I could touch it up. Then we realized that the microwave door and a smaller "wooden" part were missing. Melissa & Doug's customer service was great and parts are on the way. Good thing we bought it well ahead of my daughter's birthday! When we get the parts (in 4 days) I'll see if assembly is as bad as others have said.
My advise is to order this well ahead of when you need it. Then count ALL of the parts as soon it arrives. Then WHEN something is missing or manufactured wrong call Melissa & Doug's customer service. They will treat you right. And it's a good thing because their manufacturer's quality stinks! Hmmm...I wonder where this thing is made...
Update: Per Melissa & Doug customer service we have the third version, which is supposed to be much easier to assemble. It took less than three hours to assemble, including time to "modify" hardware to compensate for a hole drilled off center. And most importantly, my daughter loves the kitchen.

whoo boy, January 6, 2007
Very good value for money. Paint was a bit off, looked like it had been touched up in places and didn't use the same color, but probably wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for that sort of thing like we were when we unpacked it. Directions said that it could be put together in an hour, my husband who is an engineer and used to looking at that sort of thing took over 6 hours to put it together.
Very cute, though and I'm sure my two daughters will love it.

Cute, but NOT worth the assembly, August 1, 2007
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
This kitchen is really cute and fun when fully assembled. However, as one of the other reviewers mentioned, the assembly is an unbelievable amount of work. To me, it does not justify the price. The only people who should buy this product are professional woodworkers who have a lot of time on their hands!
We chose this kitchen for our two toddlers because we liked the idea of a wooden kitchen and we have enjoyed other Melissa & Doug products. (None of which required assembly, however.) My husband and I both worked on the assembly and it took us ***20 HOURS****, even working together. We used our own drill and our own wood glue - several of the holes were in the wrong place, were the wrong size, etc. We also used our own screws and washers in several instances. The absolute worst point was when an entire shelf was found to be missing - one that supports the weight of the whole structure. Luckily, we had some old boards in our garage leftover from some homemade shelves we had made previously. We actually had to saw our own shelf to replace the missing one, just so our kids would have this kitchen in time for their birthdays. I just hope it actually holds up.
I feel that the description of this toy is deceptive by not making people aware of how much work is required and how many of their own tools they must have. I would never have purchased it had I known. The other really frustrating thing is that it comes in 3 enormous, very-difficult-to-open boxes. By the time you get them open and realize how shoddy the workmanship is and how useless the instructions are, it is TOO LATE TO RETURN THE PRODUCT, which requires that everything be intact in its original packaging. To me this borders on false advertising. I hope this review will serve as a warning to others instead.
Next time, we'll go with plastic.

Terrible Manufacturing, September 18, 2007
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
I am in the process of trying to return this item. This item was missing directions. They were not included in the box. The manufacturer sent me the diretions but when we began putting it together, we found all the doors hung crooked. Further, the sink does not fit between the two supports it is supposed to screw into. The sink is either manufactured to wide or the supports were screwed to the underside of the counter incorrectly. I was very disapointed because I like the other items I purchased from this manufacturer. But they were smaller, less complicated items and I think they overeached on this one. Very upset and I am really hoping either the seller or amazon comes through on processig a full refund for this. BEWARE! I wish I could give it negative stars

The new design is SO much better!, November 24, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
I read all the reviews for this kitchen and decided to purchase it since it was such a wonderful price on Amazon. I must have gotten the latest version because it arrived in two boxes and was so easy to put together. It only took a couple of hours with two people working on it (that includes break time). I suggest opening both boxes, finding and sorting all the pieces, and then start putting it together. I only had two minor problems: one hole was mislabeled and instead of including stove knobs, I got two sets of sink knobs. I am sure Melissa and Doug will send me new stove knobs. However, put it together as soon as you get it so there is time to finish it up. My daughter is going to love this for her birthday. It is a nice solid piece of furniture...very good quality.

Perfect Play Kitchen, December 28, 2007
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
"Santa" brought this kitchen set for our 3yr old son (it was what he really wanted for x-mas). He and our 1yr old daughter absolutly love playing with this kitchen! It's very cute, I love the colors (not sickly pastel like the other kitchens I've seen), best of all it's not plastic! All the doors open and close nicely, they all line up. Plenty of space to store all the food and play kitchen acessories.
However it was difficult to put together, but I'm not going to allow that to determine my review. It took about 3-4 hours, a few choice words from daddy putting it together. In the end it was well worth it!

Love it!, August 4, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
I bought this for our daughter on her second birthday. I wanted something that was durable and beautiful - not plastic - since it would be out in the house for a long time. I expected it to be a little complicated to set up because it is a wooden piece. However, by laying out all of the pieces (to be sure all was included) and following the very clear instructions, I was able to put this together by myself (no husband or extra hands of any kind) in two evenings without a bit of trouble. Approx. 5 hours all together. We are so happy with it. Lots of storage, easy open cabinets, looks great. My daughter plays kitchen everyday - it is a year later and I will be purchasing more accessories for her 3rd birthday. Even my 6 year old son joins in with her and plays restaurant. I highly recommend this product!

NOT Worth the money or time, December 29, 2007
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Melissa & Doug Classic Deluxe Kitchen (Toy)
Sorry to report this review about a Melissa and Doug product. This kitchen set is not "wood" and sturdy like you expect from Melissa and Doug. I must have spent 6-7 hours researching kitchen sets for my daughter. My husband had to use gorilla glue, scothch tape and power tools and a drummel to make this thing work. Assembly took 5-6 hours and much patience. To top it all off, we didn't receive the two shelves for the bottom oven andsink unit. What a waste of money! Please take our advice and don't purchase this kitchen. Sure do wish we could return this kitchen for one that is worth the price. This is not our style to complain so take that into consideration. I have one more thought, wouldn't it be nice if Melissa and Doug made it right with their customers? Money for them is no object I'm sure! D.K Brighton,Michigan
