Better Than Any Substitute

Rock and roll
I really wanted to like this neck roll. I've had a painful neck for way too long now. The idea of supporting my neck while sleeping makes a lot of sense. It seemed like a relatively low price, however it's just a piece of foam. It's pretty expensive for foam.

As a trial and at the advice of my physical therapist, I used a rolled-up towel inside my pillow case as a temporary cervical neckroll. While this definitely helped, the towel would compress, as you would expect, and in the course of a night's sleep, the support benefit would be lost. The McKenzie Cervical Roll restores its shape beautifully, and provides excellent--yet comfortable--neck support for both back and side sleepers. I haven't done it yet, but I think it would also be very convenient to take along during extended travel, so as not to regress when away from home. If you are unsure if this will help your neck pain, try a rolled towel for a week--and then buy this roll to aid in a long term solution. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly, it does the job, May 2, 2008

I used to use a tempurpedic memory foam pillow. It worked for a while to ease morning neck stiffness, but after a while, it didn't retain enough support to properly position my neck. At first, when i bought this, I thought it would have the same softness/degradation issues as the tempurpedic, but it doesn't! It's soft and unobstructive enough to feel like a soft bump in the pillow but I'm surprised that its firm enough to properly support my neck. I have not had any neck stiffness since I started using this roll in my pillow. And that goes for sleeping on both my back and side. I would recommend that you get this if you are a calm sleeper (i.e., don't move around a lot at night). Otherwise, the roll could shift around and actually be out of place relative to your neck, which could make things worse.

After trying it for many weeks, I have come to the conclusion that it's causing more problems than it's worth. This roll is much, much harder than I was expecting. It seems okay, just really firm for the first few hours, then later in the night it feels worse and worse. I often wake up at 2 or 3 am because my neck is so incredibly sore. I can't lay back down on it because it feels like a rock and hurts bad. I pull out the roll, and try going back to sleep on the regular pillow. Sometimes I can't go back to sleep at all, which throws off my whole day.
If you already know that your neck is sensitive to extra firm rolls, I would say to stay away from this one and to look for a softer version of the same thing. This one might be good if you're using it for just a few hours I suppose. Overall I cannot recommend as I think I was better off without it.

Appropiate Size and Useful, July 12, 2007

This roll helped support my neck and aided with pain relief. It is not so large as to be uncomfortable. I also found as my neck improved i could occasionally sleep on my side and use the roll as a small mini-pillow- it keep my head and spine aligned.

Can't sleep without it, September 30, 2009

This is a must-have for me, so I am ordering my second one. This cervical roll supports the neck and helps prevent the headaches I awake with otherwise. It is very well made, the entire thing stands up well to washing (air dry), and an added plus - it slips into any suitcase when traveling, so you're never without neck support! It is just the right size - other neck pillows are too large in diameter and push the cervical spine in the opposite direction, therefore accomplishing little. This pillow is much more practical and portable than a cervical roll pillow, which I had used for 25 years, and much less expensive. Eventually (after a year of steady use) the center of the pillow does compress - that's why I am ordering a new one. An excellent product for the purpose.

Instant tension relief, June 11, 2009

This neck roll is AMAZING. It is suggested to put it inside your pillowcase at the bottom edge of your pillow. But actually I find it's MUCH more effective to simply put it under my neck and lay on my back. It quickly relieves the muscle tension and restores the proper curvature. Be sure to follow up with the McKenzie Neck Exercises. Don't do one without the other. You need both.
For all-night sleeping, I prefer the Arc4Life Traction Neck Pillow. It gives me better support when sleeping on my side, than using the neck roll inside the pillowcase. But when I travel, it's much easier to pack the neck roll than the Arc4Life pillow.

I do physical therapy/personal training and I am very familiar with the McKenzie products. One of my clients had been having a lot of problems waking up with a stiff neck so I suggested she use the neck roll. A few days later she said her neck was feeling MUCH better.

I tried to use the roll for a couple of weeks but continuously woke up with neck pains. I'm a petite person and wonder whether the roll itself is just too large for my neck, or whether I'm using it incorrectly. I may try again, or pass it along to a friend to try.

Good solution with one drawback, November 10, 2009

I've been using the more expensive pillow for over 17 years but switched to the McKenzie Roll for travel because of the reviews. While it worked almost as well as the pillow there is strong out-gassing which I found came from the cover not the foam. The problem is solved by washing the cover before use.
