This review is from: Skil 2336-02 iXO 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver (Tools & Hardware)
I've used this screwdriver for everything from hanging wooden blinds, installing child locks on the kitchen cabinet doors, and removing and replacing the switchplates when I paint a room to name a few. Its small and easy to use but is still powerful. This new lithium ion battery stays charged for months but the IXO can be stored on the charger without damaging the battery. I like the fact that it is always charged when I need to use it. I originally received the Skil iXO as a gift and liked it so much that I've purchased several more to give as gifts.

I love this little cordless drill. I bought it because it was small and lightweight and I've been very impressed with it's long-lasting charge and more than adequate torque for around the house. The grip is the perfect size for my hands. My husband has very large hands and loves his big drills, but doesn't mind using my little drill for small projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have children and/or shop at Ikea, buy this driver, April 15, 2008

This tool is the ultimate time saver! If you frequently assemble toys or have to put together flat packed furniture you will be very glad to buy this device. It comes with plenty of bits including hex so no more fiddling with Allen keys. It is compact enough to reach into plenty of corners a normal drill or screwdriver can't fit into. The charge lasts a long time and it has more than adequate power for daily tasks. Now it won't be useful for building a deck but in the few months I've had it I have:

put up a dozen blinds
assembled multiple toys
assembled 6 pieces of furniture (including a pottery barn table where the top required 16 bolts to attach to the pedestal)
and countless other small tasks

Every time I am so glad to have had this tool. If you see the negative Consumer Reports review, it's for the older model number. This one will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars After a few years of use, I still use it every day., March 13, 2009
By Hugh (Huntington Beach, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skil 2336-02 iXO 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver (Tools & Hardware)
This completely blows away any other small powered screwdriver I have ever used. Seriously. This is not junk like most.

I've been using the Ixo since it first came out. My partner on the job bought one, and we all made fun of him for it. "Isn't that cute!" We said.

Well then I watched him drive a self-tapping screw with no pilot hole into pretty heavy sheet metal with it. I had to try it out myself.

I wound up stealing his from him as often as I could, because carrying an 18 Volt Dewalt drill around to drive little screws is rather stupid. (low voltage electrical work)

You used to be able to find these for $40 at Home Depot, and sometimes $30 on sale. I bought mine about 2 years ago for $40. I've used it almost every work day since then.

When using for heavy-duty professional work, expect to have to charge it regularly. It will drive wood screws on a fresh charge, but not for very long. If its something that would be difficult to turn by hand, it will be difficult to turn with the Ixo. That's my way of judging whether to use this or break out the big drill.

It can be a serious time saver in a lot of ways, though. Removing/reinstalling screws that would require you to twist a driver a million times are now solved by just pushing the button.

My complaints - wish it had a clutch, but no way on something so cheap and small. Use your wrist as the clutch. When you learn to stop at the right time, you stop stripping screws.
When the battery is low, and you half-squeeze the trigger, the light doesn't turn on. Instead it lights up the out-of-gas light. This is frustrating when you're in a pinch and you just need to drive a couple more screws before putting it on the charger. However it does turn on once you push the trigger all the way. This is especially frustrating if you're using it heavily on the job, as it thinks the battery is done way too early.

So keep charging it if you're using it a lot. If not, it stays charged for a long time and works fine when you need it.

If someone stole mine or I lost it, I'd buy another one for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!!!, April 26, 2008
This review is from: Skil 2336-02 iXO 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver (Tools & Hardware)
This little Skil is perfect. Good torque. Quick. Fits just right in the hand. Charge lasts a long time while using and would fit just fine in tight spaces. Comes in a good sized carrying case and a small set of bits.

This is just the cutest little thing. I was attracted to it because of the length of time it is supposed to hold it's battery life. I have a larger Craftsman screwdriver which always runs out of juice by the time I need to use it. That is frustrating. I am not a handyman, or service person. I am a homeowner who has very occasional need for a powered screwdriver. For anything bigger than this tool -- I call in my handyman Jim to do the work. It's probably beyond me anyway.

This has a cool little carrying case and stores easily. Don't expect it to work as strongly as a drill does or a larger powered screwdriver ... you'll probably burn the motor if you do. Personally, I am still trying to find it's sweet spot. The good thing is -- I know it will have power when I need it. Cool stuff!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, November 25, 2007
By A Tool Junkie (Mountain View , CA.) - See all my reviews

After reading all of the positive comments on this driver, I was disappointed at it's performance. It is extremely compact and light-weight, but in my opinion this doesn't make up for its shortcomings.

After charging the tool, I immediately went to work using it to remove and replace screws in electrical outlets. The first thing I noticed was how slow it was to remove a screw. My standard-sized drill/driver seems to operate at about twice the speed of the Skil; it seemed like I had to wait forever for the little iXO to finish removing a screw. Power was adequate, though far short of what you'd get from a full-sized driver. The Skil had no problem removing and driving screws for electrical outlets, light switches, and door locks. I wonder whether it would be up to the task of driving screws into wood for the first time, or trying to remove a screw that had been in place for a long time...

The biggest problem with the Skil iXO was the lack of a clutch. I ruined the first Phillips screw I tried to drive when the screw hit bottom and stopped turning but the Skil didn't. I also managed to over-tighten several other screws thanks to the missing clutch. To be fair to Skil, no other cordless screwdriver in this price range has a clutch either. The low price and lithium-ion batteries of the Skil iXO certainly make it a winner when compared to other 3.6V cordless screwdrivers. Unfortunately, the lack of a clutch means that it won't suit my purposes; I'll be upgrading to a Bosch PS20-2 Litheon 10.8-Volt Lithium-Ion Pocket Driver With 2 Batteries

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep this in kitchen and put the waffle iron in the garage., October 24, 2008
By Old Fort (Marietta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skil 2336-02 iXO 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver (Tools & Hardware)
I bought this a year ago. My main criteria: a handy, inexpensive cordless household screwdriver that doesn't have to be thrown out because a NiCad battery gives out. The Skil iXO is a no-frills product, but it meets these criteria perfectly. I keep the case in the kitchen, where I can grab it immediately without searching for my toolbox in a cluttered garage. I don't use it often, but after a year without a single recharge, this little gem is still going strong!

4.0 out of 5 stars A handy tool for certain tasks., September 23, 2009

This review is from: Skil 2336-02 iXO 3.6-Volt Cordless Screwdriver (Tools & Hardware)
I think this little screwdriver (and I do mean little) is great. I like it when people start off positive instead of always focusing on the negative. Why is it great?

It is compact! I have very large hands, and the handle is shorter than the depth of my grip. Is this a problem? I thought it would be, but thanks to the huge trigger it was comfortable. This screwdriver comes in a round black soft case that features the SKIL logo. Inside you have the charger, a little ziplock chock full of bits, and the screwdriver itself. Its so nice to have a small package like this case containing everything. The entire case will fit perfect into most people's repair kits. You get the benefit of a Lithium Ion Battery which essentially doesn't loose a charge, at least nowhere near like nicads do. I refuse to buy any nicad power tools anymore.

Now for the not-great... This little baby does not carry a huge punch in a small package. It does not have the power of a drill, so don't think you can drill holes with it in anything more than super soft pine(or balsa wood). I bought this primarily for a project to hang a pot and pan rack, and to replace my old black and decker nicad model that died on me. I needed to drill six 2 1/2 inch drywall screws through 1" pine and into a stud(most likely spruce). I tried, just to test, drilling without a pilot hole through the pine board. It did it just fine. It would not, however, drill into the harder wood of the stud. I then pre-drilled a hole through the pine board and into the stud, leaving maybe a half inch at the end undrilled. The skil screwdriver put the screw in without issue until it hit that last 1/2 inch and couldn't do it. so I did a third test drilling a full 3 inches through, and then used the skil to finish. it did the job fine.

To sum up my test...don't expect this screwdriver to be a miracle device. from my tests, it handled terrific for most household tasks. drilling into drywall to hang a picture, put up a fixture, etc... this screwdriver will handle fine. putting together anything will pre-drilled holes, it'll handle fine. If you loose touch and think this is a professional grade tool you'd use on a construction site, it will not do fine.

I recommend this tool to ANY computer repair tech out there. If you need to open up computer cases and replace parts, or work on any consumer electronic devices, this tool is perfect. It's small enough to fit into a portable repair kit. For home, it also is good as a quick fix screwdriver that can be kept in a kitchen drawer.

I'm going to keep mine for just those casual uses... however I ended up using my full sized drill outfitted with the extension and bits from the skil screwdriver to do my pots and pans project. I could drill in the drywall screws without needing to pilot them first. (I just rolled the screws in soap first to reduce the chance it would split the stud underneath. the soap trick also eliminates the squealing sound of dry drilling wood).

this screwdriver easily deserves 4 stars for what it is...a casual screwdriver. It's not a home project screwdriver by any means if you plan on building cabinets, etc... you're best off for a meatier cordless in the 10+ volt range that doubles as a drill. At only 20 to 50 bucks more than this, it may be a better alternative too.

However,
for what this screwdriver is meant to do, it does it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Got a bad one brand new, September 3, 2007

Note: Suspect I just got unlucky, but the design of the trigger lock is less than robust.

I bought one of these in a local hardware store.
Nice small unit, nothing fancy, but the demo unit had way more torque than a typical ni-cad cordless.
Got it home, charged it up.
Would only run in reverse.
Moved the direction switch trigger lock to the forward direction once, and the unit let out a small amount of magic smoke and died.

Store took it back nicely, traded up for a lithium Makita.

Suspect I just got a bad one, other than that direction switch, the unit appears rather solidly made... and definitely has plenty of torque.

And it charges way quicker than I am used to on older Ni-Cads.
