Received the movie verison of Optimus Prime from my father as a father's day gift, quite apropos as he spent a good chunk on the orignal transformers for me 20 years ago. 1.0 out of 5 stars Toy Not Suitable For Child Under 12 Yrs. Of Age
I gave this toy to my grandson for his 8th birthday because he is crazy about Transformers. I was not happy to see his frustration when he could not transform the toy from one thing to another. I had my daughter try to work with it (she is 31 yrs. & had Transformers as a child) & she could not even figure it out. It clearly states on the box that this toy is for children...

Received the movie verison of Optimus Prime from my father as a father's day gift, quite apropos as he spent a good chunk on the orignal transformers for me 20 years ago. This is an excellent transformer, both as a robot and as a truck. As a truck, I much appreciated the rubber tires and very sturdy constuction. The robot mode is very detailed, with many articulation points. Battery-powered lights and sounds are a nice touch. The only con is the complexity of the transformation. Maybe I am getting old, but the first time, it took over an hour to get the transformation right. Hasbro using picture-only instuctions did not make this any easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latest Optimus Prime from the upcoming move, June 3, 2007
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime (Toy)
From the box, the toy looks a little bulky, and it is, but not in ways that you'd really imagine, it snaps apart just about everywhere, and it's hard to tell whether or not you've broken something. But, in robot or vehicle mode, this thing looks cool. The flames don't really matter to me, it might even make Optimus look better, but he really transforms, and it's quite spectacular. At the end of his transformation to autobot mode, he has this automorph thing that slides a couple of pieces into place at once and it makes it seem as though you're actually holding animation.

The product listing says ages 5-12... Not really. It says on the box that it is a level 4 difficulty to transform, and don't underestimate that. I barely managed to get the thing transformed in under a halfan hour, but maybe you'll have more luck than I did. The elctronic horns and flashy lights are really just a small annoyance to me, I didn't really need them, but I don't mind. Also, the thing is heavy compared to most other transformers toys. I've only bought the deluxes and they are nothing compared to the weight of Prime. So, if you're like me, and just love transformers, then you'll love this, but if you have a child who thinks it's cool(which it is), be prepared to transform.

PROS
1 It's Optimus Prime
2 Both robot mode and Vehicle mode look nice
3 Transformation works well
4 Ion cannon fires, folds in, is safely detatchable
5 It is sturdy, and a lot of fun

CONS
1 It will scare you, making you think you've already broken your latest toy
2 It is a tad pricy at $40
3 Putting finishing touches on the vehicle mode can be a pain

All in all, this is a great transformers toy, and all Transfans should like it, but it's okay if you don't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get something else for your young kids, June 30, 2007
Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

Don't get me wrong. I love this figure. It's one of the best Primes I've ever seen. Both his robot and vehicle forms capture the film Prime accurately and he's well crafted. However, while he makes for an excellent posed figure, which is my intent and the intent of many who collect, he makes for a poor children's toy.

He is very difficult to transform and you'll have to struggle with Hasbro's poor directions to get it right. And you'll want to do it yourself so you can show your kids how to do it. He seems more durable then the other movie figures out there which is good because rough play from children can quickly lead to the demise of those figures.

If you have an older child or a child who cares well for his (or her!) figures then this might be a good purchase but at $[...] be very reluctant about picking this up for your kids as it is not indestructable.

Overall? These figures are fantastic for collectors and if that's you then I recommend this Prime figure highly. However, if you're looking to pick up a toy for your young kids based on the hot new movie then I recommend looking at some of the other options available (Hard I know, especially if your child asks for this figure directly!)

As a collectable 4 1/2 / 5
As a toy 2/ 5

5.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Optimus Prime, June 11, 2007
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime (Toy)
When I first saw this latest Optimus Prime on the shelf, I wasn't sure what to think of him. He looked a bit bulky and I was concerned that a toy based on the movie would have a rushed and simplistic feel to him.

I was mistaken.

Optimus Prime is bulky, but he's also a pretty sturdy, solid figure. Of all the Optimus Prime toys released over the years, this one stands as the tallest with the exception of the Masterpiece Optimus Prime.

The figure has a fairly elaborate transformation that's both clever and siple enough to do, but also fairly lengthy. My first attempt at transforming him took what seemed like half an hour. I can now transform him pretty quickly. There are a couple of steps that cause other pieces to automatically transform themselves (his feet and his head/torso) which are all quite slick.

None of Optimus Prime's gimmicks are obstructive. He has lights and sounds -- lighting up his eyes and windshield -- as well as a flip-out cannon and as stated before a couple auto-transforming pieces. All of it is well implemented, and even the two AA batteries are cleverly hidden in his gas tanks.

There's plenty of articulation to be had as well. Most of his major joints rachet and hold their place effectively, and each of his fingers can be moved individually.

His vehicle mode is pretty massive, feels solid and looks pretty cool. It even has rubber tires and some good weight to it.

There are some minor complaints about the toy. His hood transformation is a bit tricky, and overall his transformation could be a bit much for younger kids. Still, he's worth the price and probably the best Optimus Prime figure to come out in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally A Transformer Worth The Money...., June 6, 2007
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime (Toy)
When my four year old pointed this out to me during an episode of Ben Ten, I said, 'Okay, we'll see.' Well, I saw the price tag and attempted to get him to pick a less expensive one. I don't mind paying the money if he'll actually play with the thing, but what usually happens is he gets frustrated and the toy gets the 'WALL TREATMENT'. I took a chance on it (as if I really had a choice) and I have to admit this thing is really put together well. The pieces are still connected in many places by the 'ball and socket' method, but its been manufactured very well. I would say that four years old is probably the cut-off age for playing with this unit (of course that always varies). I suppose I could ramble on but the best thing I can say about it is that he hasn't put it down in two days. I can't recall any other Transformer holding his attention like this one and I must confess, I've been playing with it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Transformer to own, July 14, 2007

You know how after you convert a Transformer back and forth a few times, the pieces tend not to sit flush with each other in vehicle mode? Not a problem here. Movie Leader Optimus fits tight after multiple transformations, in fact it's the best fit I've seen in an complex Transformer. I have two of the Takara Binaltech metal Transformers (Wheeljack BT-14 Mustang and Smokescreen BT-07 Subaru WRX Impreza) and they don't fit together as nearly as snug as Movie Leader Optimus.

The horn and window lights are a nice touch, and the retractable head mechanism is cool. If I was forced to complain about something I'd wish all the gray plastic pieces were painted chrome. The only piece that doesn't have a place to attach in truck mode (read: what you will lose if you're not careful) is the blue laser bolt that comes out of Optimus's pistol.

This is a Transformer to buy....maybe two, one to keep in the box and one to play with.

This review is from: Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime (Toy)
Optimus Prime has never looked better, apart from the original. His "auto-morph" feature is cool, and the electronic noises and lights are cool as well. This toy should appeal to collectors, and kids who just want to play with Optimus. I am very excited to see the movie, and this toy is making the wait worth while. I hope this review was helpful, because he certainly was worth the money for me.

You need to change your label. I spent over $150 on 4 Transformers for my grandson & I would have liked him to be able to enjoy it. This is definitely a collector's item for older people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Optimus Prime, August 23, 2007

This review is from: Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime (Toy)
My sis has this toy she doesn't use it much (so it;s basically mine he he) .It is pretty cool I have megatron as well they are both equal but optimus prime is a little harder than megatron to transform since you have to position him so perfect. There are a couple of optimus prime's like the voyager one trust me it's not all that good, and the robo vision one it's equal to the movie leader one. but whichever one you buy don't put a dent in your wallet and buy it from amazon. It won't kill you to wait a little for target, wal mart or where ever to restock on their O.P's.
