3.0 out of 5 stars Great Rack with a Flaw

Assembly was a breeze and it fits easily onto the hitch of our Toyota Sienna (using a Hidden Hitch). All the mechanisms for folding and extending work great and give us plenty of clearance to access the trunk of the minivan. I also love having the hitch and bike locks integrated. Makes it much easier to manage and I did not need to buy any accessories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Rack with a Flaw, August 26, 2008
This review is from: Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
We puchased this rack about six monthes ago. We were attracted to it's ability to swing out of the way of the tailgate of our Mazda Tribute SUV.(Note that it requires a 2" receiver, which is not standard on this vehicle) It also is lower in height than other models, enabling the glass to open without swinging the rack out of the way. The bars that carry the bikes easily swing down out of the way, unlike some other models we have seen. It also comes with effective locks for the bikes and and the hitch pin. With the heavy-duty design, be prepared for it's considerable weight. Not everyone will be able to install or remove it form the receiver without assistance.
My beef is with the design for securing the swinging arm to fixed part of the rack. Like most other "swing-away" bike racks, it uses a large threaded bolt to lock them together. It holds securely, but ours cross threaded after just one month of use. I had to take it back to the dealer and get a replacement rack. This is a dumb idea! How about some kind of a cam action latch instead of threads that are bound to wear out? It is odd that everyone slavishly copies this inferior design!
I would recommend this rack to a friend, but only with the warning that they be especially carefull when inserting the locking bolt. Look for better systems in future racks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great carrier for the money and features, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
This is a great rack if you need access to the rear tailgate. I considered pretty much every rack out there. All of them have tradeoffs. I didn't want to remove a wheel then climb on the roof to mount each bike. I also didn't want to have the bikes in the way when I needed to get something out of the trunk (that happens quite a bit with kids on a roadtrip). I looked at the models that fold down. That's a great idea, unless you have the rack loaded. 4 bikes can be 120 - 140 lbs. That's a little much for some folks to lift up. Besides, just lowering the rack doesn't give great access to the rear since you still have to step around the rack.

On to the Revolver, which is almost perfect. My mountain bike has the cables running under the main tube. That means that I have to put a protective cloth between the cables and the tube or the cables would rub the paint. Obviously that's not Thule's fault. That's it though as far as negatives. It's the best rack I've seen (the Swing Daddy by Yakima seems to be a clone, but it has some issues). The Thule Revolver does everything! It includes the anti sway cages that lock the bikes in place really well. It includes a lock that secures the frame (someone could still steal the wheels so a second lock could be used. It includes an anti-sway hitch pin w/ lock that snugs the mount to the hitch. The swing-away works so easily anyone can use it.

If I didn't need to get into my trunk, if I wanted to remove wheels and mount to the roof, if I wanted my bikes banged up I'd have gone with something else.

I have been using this rack for about 1 month. The rack was easy to assemble following the detailed instructions Thule provided. It affixes firmly into the hitch receiver and holds the bike securly in place with little or no front to back or side to side sway. As delivered, the two lock cylinders did not match, and the keys only fit one of the cylinders. I called Thule and they sent me a matching cylinder right away. I highly recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Solid Rack but Damages Bikes, September 3, 2009

This is a solid, durable bike rack and the swing feature is great. Every major component of the rack is excellent and up to the Thule standard - EXCEPT ONE. The anti-sway component is a poorly engineered, cheap, piece of junk that will damage your bike. I have three bicycles that carry scars from the antisway accessory. Unfortunately you need the antisway so that your bikes do not rock and bang into each other on the rack. I strongly suggest that you never strap a carbon frame bike to the anti-sway. At the point(s) where the bike frame touches the antisway I have a brand new Cervelo P3 that has a dime sized area with no paint on it. My road bike, TT bike and my son's aluminum frame road bike all have scars from this rack.

I cant afford a new rack so I've glued felt to all points on the rack that touch the bike frame. This looks terrible but it is protecting my bicycles. You can also use an old inner tube as a protective sleeve over your frame. It's a shame that Thule ruined an otherwise excellent rack with such a poorly thought out anti-sway device. I guess the idea is to save $2 at the risk of damaging a bicycle frame that costs $'000s.

If you take good care of your bikes, I would look for another option. If you dont mind the missing paint, it's a solid rack.

The Thule 964 is very easy to setup and can accomodate 4 bikes with ease. The swing away rack gives you the ability to move the bikes aside to access the trunk. I would recommend this to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Rack!, August 30, 2009
By COBiker (Denver) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
I spent a lot of time researching various brands and styles of bike racks. I settled on a hitch mount rack since loading three bikes on top of my Toyota Highlander would be a chore for me, and for my wife, impossible. I finally bit the bullet and spent $400 at REI for the rack.
This is a very solid and heavy rack. It weighs about fifty lbs. Construction is excellent. It is easy to assemble. There are two pivot points on the swing arm which allow the rack to move out of the way of the vehicle tail gate. I put light layer of wheel bearing grease on these before installation, though the manual did not call for it. The pins look like they might have a teflon coating, however, the grease will help repel water in the future. Everything moves easily with a full load of bikes. I also applied thread locking compound to the nuts on the pins, they have plastic lock washers on the nuts, however, road vibration can eventually work these loose (I used to be an automotive engineer, btw.) The nuts and bolts are 19 mm, using a socket wrench and a box wrench during installation will be much easier than the wrenches supplied with the rack.
Loading the bikes is simple. Thule also provides four very effective anti-sway brackets to keep the bikes from rocking. A nylon strap comes with the rack as a final measure to secure everything. The rack comes with an integrated locking cable for the bikes which tucks neatly into the frame. As another reviewer mentioned, this will probably slow down a thief not prevent one who is intent on stealing your bikes so you may want to invest in a Kryptonite lock and cable.
The rack mounts to 2" hitch receiver. Make sure your car has a 2" hitch or an adapter before buying this rack. Now here's the tricky part: the rack is bolted into the hitch. The bolt goes through the hitch and threads into the rack. It is very easy to improperly align the bolt and the threads, thus ruining the bolt/threads. I almost did this. Just be careful lining everything up. The bolt should thread with little resistance. If the bolts is in slightly and you are having trouble tightening it, take it out and check to make sure the threads are not boogered up.
Do not underestimated the convenience of a swing out rack! This is worth the extra $100 to $150 you pay for this rack. The first time you leave something in the back of your car you will be glad you have this feature. Enjoy.

This is probably the best bike rack made, heavy, secure in the hitch, bikes don't move, it swings out of the way, has it's own two locks, and the bikes don't come in contact with the vehicle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thule 4 bike swing out hitch mounted rack, September 22, 2008
This review is from: Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
Had it 3 weeks works great, very easy to assemble, not cheap, pain that swing feature is not pull to release only, requires very large butterfly handle to be unscrewed and screwed everytime you want to open rear door. If you have SUV with glass door that can be opened separately from rear door I would recommend getting a flip down rack, less hastle ( pull to release only usually) to open rear door when bikes NOT on rack - no unscrewing and screwing - and when bikes ARE ON rack just use glass door for loading and unloading, that would be cheaper, easier and faster since there are more required rear door openings with bikes OFF than ON rack - hey we live and learn.

Overall well made. I like it. The only thing I don't like is that there is very little spacing between bikes. When you have 4 full size bikes then it becomes tricky to secure all of them.
