5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing TV For An Amazing Price!
Everytime I went to a store and saw TV's on display I would always gravitate toward the DLP's. I find their picture quality to be the best in comparison to LCD and Plasma. I got this TV for $1500 through Electronic Expo here on Amazon. The TV came in a week and my god is it amazing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 57HM167
I purchased a Toshiba 57HM157 from a local retailer in Oregon, Video Only June 11-07. 4 days after getting the TV the Lamp went out. I read reviews on other rear projection Toshiba products prior to my purchase and noticed several complaints of short lamp life which prompted me to purchase an extended in-home warranty. I have had the TV less than 30 days so I will be...

Everytime I went to a store and saw TV's on display I would always gravitate toward the DLP's. I find their picture quality to be the best in comparison to LCD and Plasma. I got this TV for $1500 through Electronic Expo here on Amazon. The TV came in a week and my god is it amazing.

I've read some reviews on older Toshiba models about lamp problems, but this model came out in Feb. 2007 so I'm pretty sure Toshiba worked out the kinks. So far so good for me. The picture quality is extremely sharp. DLP is great because you can sit closer to it than you could with Plasma or LCD and still get a crystal image. The room we have it in isn't that big. I also have a PS3 hooked up through HDMI on this TV and gaming on this TV is just as good as watching movies. I've had no experience with the dreaded "rainbow effect" either. In my opinion this is the best buy for the money. The TV performs excellent, it's not deep in the back, and best of all it's very light so it's not a hassle to move around. Highly reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for a 1080p TV, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
I was looking for a good price on a 1080p tv. The Toshiba TALEN 57hm167 DLP was the best value I could find. It is 57", very bright, and does 1080p. I play XBOX 360, watch some tv, and occasionally watch movies. I have spent the most time so far playing XBOX 360. Video games look awesome on this tv. The picture is great and it is very bright. I think 1080p makes a marginal difference in picture quality right now. However, I think playing games in 1080p will be very nice when I have the capability to do so.
I have only two complaints so far with my new tv. I can't input 1080p to my tv with my XBOX 360 pro because it doesn't have HDMI. The XBOX 360 elite has an HDMI connector, but the XBOX 360 "pro" and "core" versions do not. The Toshiba 57hm167 only accepts 1080p through an HDMI input. You can't input 1080p through component video or through the pc input. From what I understand, it is somewhat rare for a 1080p tv to take 1080p through the component video interface. However, a lot of 1080p tv's take 1080p through the pc input(also called VGA or D-SUB). Why my Toshiba 57" DLP doesn't is a mystery to me. My other minor gripe is that standard definition tv doesn't look great sometimes. Some channels, like comedy central and CNBC look fine. Others don't look very good. I don't care very much about that because comedy central and CNBC are the 2 channels I watch the most anyways. I have seen other high definition tv's that display standard def.(480I) on a high def.(720p or 1080i) screen better than my Toshiba does. Maybe the 1080p resolution makes a difference. It is a big jump in going from 480i to 1080p. Whatever the case, standard def. tv can look better on high def. television sets.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase so far. I love the excellent picture quality of 1080p in a very modestly priced tv. I had a budget of $1,500 dollars, and I didn't think I could make that with a 1080p tv. Toshiba fills the modestly priced 1080p tv segment perfectly. There isn't much more I could have hoped for in my new tv besides the pc input being able to accept 1080p. The picture quality is great and I would highly recommend the Toshiba TALEN 57hm167 57" DLP to anyone that is looking for this type of tv.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great TV, but had to get 3 before I got one that was OK., June 3, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
The Toshiba 57HM167 has a great picture, nice sound, and attractive design. I would say that for the price, this is the best TV out on the market right now, (June '07). The only problem that I had was getting a TV that didn't have any problems with it. It took me three times. The first TV was delivered with a broken screen and cabinet. I had to wait again for the second TV to be delivered; it came in working order, but had small dark spots on the screen which could be viewed from 15 feet away. After a third wait, Amazon sent a replacement and picked up the second TV at the same time. The third TV works well and looks great thus far. During this whole ordeal, I talked with Toshiba, Amazon, and the local Toshiba repair center and all were very helpful and understanding of the situation. Other than the wait, I would say that I am pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars experience with customer service too, August 8, 2007

Bulb went after 8 days. Called Toshiba Customer Service, they sent a new one immediately, returned the defective one in a prepaid box. Replacement was really easy, start to finish maybe 30 seconds. Despite the problem, this set is a great value. Awesome picture, all the features you could want. I would buy the same thing again and would recommend to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bang for buck... top notch, October 25, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
I can't write a glowing enough review for this tv. Yes, I have a few minor quibbles... Silk Screen Effect being the only one of significance (not that significant, really) but all in all, this is a fantastic set. Accepts a 1080p/24 input (reframes to 60, but does an impeccable job) means you can watch the new Hi-Def movie formats as they were meant to be seen. Standard definition tv when moved to the 4:3 format is tolerable.

I have mine hooked up to the HD-a35 toshiba HD-DVD player and I cannot tell you how many peoples jaws have dropped.

This tv, in all honesty, was a steal!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad, August 5, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
The Pro's

Great picture, HD and NOT HD channels, multi 1080p native inputs (3, which no other tv under 4 grand has) Easy to use and move.

The Con's

I too, had the lamp go out after about 2 weeks. Toshiba had me look up the serial #, but they sent me another lamp 3 days later. Hope the problem doesnt persist!

4.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba Talen 57 HM167 57", June 8, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
Great value for the price. Big viewing screen that has the all the necessary connections, such as HDMI. The only negative is that the picture is hard to view from the sides. The TV is awesome when viewed from the front or Left and right center. TV is also very light, which was surprising. However, you simply can't go wrong for the money and I would repurchase the TV again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Purchase Toshiba DLP TVs at your own risk, December 1, 2008
By Todd (Oak Park, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toshiba TALEN 57HM167 57-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV - EOL August 2007 (Electronics)
I initially bought a 56hm168. Within one year, both the lamp exploded (glass all over) AND the light engine died. Toshiba replaced the TV with a 57hm167. A year and a half later - the light engine dies - and this time it is out of warranty. This is a totally different TV, with different production runs, and both have had light engine failures. Cost to repair (if you do it yourself) is $932 for the part. If you have a tech come out and do it, well over $1000. Even getting Toshiba to fix the orginal TV while it was under warranty was as painful as pulling teeth. It took almsot 4 months for them to get it done. While the image may be nice on these TVs, and the price attractive, the quality of the product is abysmal. DO NOT BUY THESE!!!

Got it in Aug. 2007, wish I would have looked here first. I didn't use it much, mostly for games and movies, not much television-watching. Tried to turn it on last night, and the screen wouldn't turn on. Eventually got a pattern of led's on the front panel that indicated lamp not working (a yellow led with red flashing). There was also a voice that came from the television that said "Lamp not working" heh. I called Toshiba, and the guy had me hang up and take the lamp out, then call him back. He asked me if I could see any damage (I couldn't see any, but didn't know what I was looking for). He said that it was probably not the bulb, but the housing, and that I should take it to the nearest service dealer (40 miles away, ugh). Felt like I was getting the runaround. I'll just give my money to some other company in the future, and be sure to check here before I do :) . Lesson learned. It's a shame, because I liked the television when it worked.
